yeah Greco Go II is my bias in that dept, I think of it alongside the MusicMan Sabre II, Peavey T60 et al. The Vantage line are pretty good too. Classic 80s “at last, perfection” mindset.

I'll check those out, the ones I posted are all Ibanez, Yamaha, and Aria

Feels very "studio pro" aesthetically

The aluminum necked Kramers are cool for that vibe too

I don’t know how I feel about those double cut neck-through wood ones. They’re kind of awesome but I also get vague unpleasant 70s vibes from them like jazz fusion guys in tan turtlenecks with half tint glasses.

I always imagine they play really well and weigh a ton.

joygoat, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 01:51 (one year ago) link

yes when i browse them i definitely ask what exactly i see myself playing on these things....the part-coffee table aesthetic is an obstacle but my guess like yours is that they really shred and i should stop overthinking it

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 02:16 (one year ago) link

haha joygoat I think that fusion vibe is the attraction tbh but you are dead on

You can get em pretty cheap on Reverb if you wait for them to pop up in slightly tougher shape - sort of $700 range

(the Greco Go IIs I mean)

I always think of Aria basses whenever I see that design. They're nice to play - I could see getting into them if I needed to explore the sound of the 80s.

those are cool, though that top horn is a bit much for me. this is a cheapie on mpls craigslist right now, not exactly what I'm talking about but in the zone

Interesting. I love the fiesta red. The unpainted sections on the body are a little confusing. They're obviously meant to evoke a hippie sandwich, but I presume that it's not actually a neck-through?

peace, man, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 14:57 (one year ago) link

also Jerry Garcia's Wolf guitar, which I think the Alembic guy made for him custom

i've been thinking i want to get back into Mascis style shredding. i was moving more in a jazzier/country direction and bought a gretch semi-hollow but i never really fell in love with it. should i be looking at telecasters? i just want something basic with a whammy

Heez, Wednesday, 29 March 2023 17:56 (one year ago) link

Alomar’s Alembic guitar just doesn’t look right, and maybe it’s because I’ve seen so many Alembic basses*. It reminds me of this, which also doesn’t look right:

*I’ve never once seen any Alembic in person, just in photos.

Tomson Mustang update: some hidden problems - neck heel needed drilling and dowelling but now a solid joint. New bone nut, fresh set of 12s, three full turns on the truss rod (which by some miracle still works), shims and adjustments ... it's about 90% of the way there and plays well. Pickups are great.

Impressive for a 50 year old cheapie. I doubt it played this well out of the factory!

Not generally a fan of gold hardware but the wear has it looking pretty good.
Looks like bridge and neck pickups were changed to P90s.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 5 April 2023 03:13 (one year ago) link

I'm having a weird thing where gold hardware is looking better and better to me after years of not liking it

but i've seen other white SGs like that w/the gold hardware, always looks great

unrelate:
i always feel bad for ppl who bought super expensive left-handed guitars and then are trying to move them on craigslist, tough sell

gold is back, baby. i just bought and steel and gold watch and am redoing my kitchen cabinets with brushed brass hardware.

i think with guitars though gold hardware only looks good with black or white finishes. maybe sunburst too.

two weeks pass...

Craigslist guy wants $1100 for this '80s Greco Danelectro - too much (a vintage Silvertone 1448 goes for less) but I'm curious what their lipstick pickups sound like

https://images.craigslist.org/00808_72BY2IAstJCz_0t20CI_1200x900.jpg

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 20 April 2023 05:30 (one year ago) link

I'd probably rather get a Squier Jag and put lipsticks in it ala Tom Verlaine anyway

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 20 April 2023 05:32 (one year ago) link

i have a 90's one of those with a wooden bridge & plastic tuners. the best thing about it is the neck. it has the most comfortable neck and you can play it all day. how the lipstick pickups sound. the best i can explain it- well, the tele goes "honk" and the strat goes "quack" & the dano goes "bong" and that's the way it goes. with the pickup selector switcg it's very versatile, you can play an entire set on 'em. so much so that i used it as my main guitar for gigging without a backup for a time, often without a backup, which was incredibly stupid because it's very unreliable. one time a bushing grommet flew off during our opening song at a huge gig in front of like 1k ppl, and i was horrendously out of tune for the entire set. with the metal hardware it loses some mojo. i think i paid around $200 incl. hard case.

hoonja doonja love me anymore (Deflatormouse), Thursday, 20 April 2023 06:15 (one year ago) link

it goes (((bong))), like there's an orb around the sound it makes, it seems to levitate. it's missing something, doesn't have that grounding zap! to it, kinda hovers or floats in midair. the odd duck that doesn't quack.

when you wish upon a tsar (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 20 April 2023 10:55 (one year ago) link

I usually don't like the racing stripes but i really love that mustang

The jaguar I bought showed up a while ago and it was flawless, no dust or marks or anything anywhere. There was a little fret wear so someone had played it but otherwise it was pristine. It also had an actual fender branded locking trem instead of a squier one but no bar. It took a while to set up because whoever i bought if from seemed to have no idea what they were doing.

Never having played one I didn't know what to expect, but I like it even though the short scale and relatively large frets feel really strange. But I can kind of play the intro to radiohead's 'let down' now because I can actually stretch between the 3rd and 6th frets
