Josh Klinghoffer is a pro sideman dude, he was in RHCP for a while, I'm assuming a super great player

he filled in for Matt Cameron on Pearl Jam’s last tour - he’s really good (his own stuff under Pluralone is p decent too)

Whoa reading Klinghoffer's bio is quite a thing — he's played with/been close Bob Forrest, John Frusciante, the Chili Peppers and now Jane's Addiction (among many others). He must be some kind of junkie whisperer.

He played some of the drums on Warpaint's Exquisite Corpse record, as well.

I think a big part of being an in-demand sideman is the ability to be chill and vibe with a wide range of challenging personalities

Also the youngest inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame I think!

not a fan of his drumming on that one though. maybe just the production...

this is reminding me that i read a Rolling Stone (?) profile of Josh K after he'd been dumped from the RHCP - it was quite affecting actually, a young guy trying to navigate difficult emotional territory - can't remember if it mentioned Warpaint?

Nerdy I know, I think recordings of Jane's from that 90/91 period that are taken from further away really suit the setting, I like the way you can hear the music bouncing around the auditorium a little on the right channel.

I see Janes are touring the UK soon but no word on whether Navarro is back or not

At first I was like “they are so old now, they should retire” and a day later I’m like “yeah this is awesome and keep going”

it sounds like the latest Jane's activity is kind of intending to reclaim their original vibe after a few decades of lesser shows/music - and I think there's a definite "putting house in order while it is physically possible" aspect to that - Perry was always older and is looking it for sure - even a bit frail - and his voice is cooked - but at some of those shows last year he really lifted & was sounding better than he has for a long while - and it is kinda cool seeing him acting his age tbh!

and for me these is just something about seeing these guys mend their relationships that is really special

still interested in hearing another/better version of that new song - it looked like Dave was fiddling with a pedal a bit and maybe there was more could have been going on - but it does have that "all four members flying off in different directions but also super tight" dynamic that the OG lineup had - rather than the more ploddy rock vibe of the Eric-free stuff

they also played this one - which is an interesting case study in that they played it with Josh K last year and it was kinda cool but not quite Jane's - and now Dave N has come along and added a shitload of clever parts and suddenly it feels like JA - like it probably still betrays being devised without him, but it really does transform the song - and honestly, while the Josh K shows were actually super fun, they really are one of the most "has to be these 4 guys" bands of all time

That first new song was pretty much a paradigmatic Jane's Addiction song. That riff could have fit straight onto Nothing's Shocking without any changes. The second one I don't like as much. Kinda bland.

Given that all their classic material was written in one tremendous burst of creativity before they even had one record out, in the midst of a fomenting subcultural revolution they were deeply immersed in, I’m gonna continue to ignore this late-period “return to form” til I’m the last one to the party and everyone is shaking my lapels screaming “why aren’t you at the party?! It’s fucking BANGING” just to spare myself the heartbreak of getting my hopes up & dashed again.

Perry Farrell was interviewed extensively for this 2 part documentary on Lollapalooza that streams on the Paramount channel. It's remarkable how little insight he brings. The dude has nothing of interest to say, at all.
