That’s really funny. Is this like an official thing?

He played Yellow/Here in Edinburgh in 2001, and afterwards said it was to point out the similarity between the two

That's supposed to be Dan Fouts, no?
― This machine bores fascism (PBKR), Monday, 17 April 2023 11:14 (three years ago)
I guess logically it doesn't make sense, but it does seem like something Malkmus might say. Impressive levels of music nerdery here for 1993, before everyone could easily listen to everything.

I suspect David Berman actually wrote this. The Teddy Roosevelt quote is the giveaway

― a (waterface), Monday, 17 April 2023 20:08 (three years ago)
The taste is much closer to Berman's than SM's too (Butthole Surfers, David Allan Coe)
― goodoldneon, Monday, 17 April 2023 20:09 (three years ago)
and the prose style is exactly like Berman

I'm on board with this theory

The Berman theory is a really good call… given a few references in there especially, it absolutely tracks with other stuff he’s written.

"Early Arrivals at the Cocktail Party: The Inner Workings of an Empty-Handed Conversation" does sound pretty Bermany, now that I think of it

in that Jicks Picks thing just above ... track 38, "Andy Will" ... does anyone know anything about that song? i don't recognize it and Googling hasn't helped.
maybe it's a Jicks album track incorrectly named, i don't know all the post-Pavement titles. maybe it's a cover? an SM outtake?
― alpine static, Thursday, 20 April 2023 07:29 (three years ago)
it's either a cover or an outtake. i've never heard of it
― a (waterface), Friday, 21 April 2023 15:13 (three years ago)
i couldn't find a thing about it, which is hard to do
i like it!
maybe i'll ask on the Pavement Reddit or soemthing

Seeing Malkmus solo tonight in a tiny club in Portland. The club livestreams shows on their Instagram page , and a local station is livestreaming it as well. Guessing he'll be on around 9:30-10 p.m. Pacific.

His voice was shot, but it was a good short-ish set (30 mins, 5-6 stretched-out songs including a cover of "Expressway to Yr Skull."
― paisley got boring (Eazy), Sunday, 25 February 2024 19:58 (two years ago)
What other songs did he play

Another clip here from the friend I went with. (Guessing the whole set is / will be out there, what with the livestream.)
― paisley got boring (Eazy), Sunday, 25 February 2024 21:44 (two years ago)
did he have the jicks with him there?
― ufo, Sunday, 25 February 2024 21:59 (two years ago)
Just the Jicks drummer, I think.
― paisley got boring (Eazy), Sunday, 25 February 2024 22:00 (two years ago)
backed by The Joggers (Jake's PDX band before he joined the Jicks)

― il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Monday, 26 February 2024 15:48 (two years ago)
I wouldn't complain, but since it's been six years now I'm primed for another full on Jicks record too.
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 26 February 2024 15:49 (two years ago)
SM has not one but 2 albums recorded, it's just a matter of getting them released.
Jicks are probably done. Jake (the 7th and final Jick?) is the only one still actively performing music, albeit with Malkmus.

is it correct to assume one is a traditional techniques follow-up and one is a more typical malkmus rock album (though i guess without the jicks)
― ufo, Monday, 26 February 2024 21:31 (two years ago)
I had totally missed that about the Jicks being done, that's a bummer.

i vaguely remember something about him working on a follow-up with the band he'd put together to tour it since the tour was cancelled due to covid?
― ufo, Tuesday, 27 February 2024 06:15 (two years ago)
My personal dream album would be SM applying his current songwriting approach backwards to the S&E-era sonic palette. Probably never gonna happen.
― feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 15:37 (two years ago)
Traditional Techniques suffered so much from the Covid lockdown, I think they cancelled that whole tour but the band was going to be great for that.
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 16:17 (two years ago)
Traditional Techniques and the Dylan album were my soundtrack to the paranoid first months of Covid.
― il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 17:04 (two years ago)
Trad Tech should've been right up my alley but I just couldn't get into it beyond a couple of songs. I should revisit.
That electronic album was terrible.
Proggy rock SM is still my favorite SM. I'd take something like Sparkle Hard in a heartbeat.
― alpine static, Tuesday, 27 February 2024 17:09 (two years ago)
^^ Yeah, I like Trad Tech a ton and even Groove Denied, to a lesser degree, but an album with some trademark SM prog swerves would be great.
