_Good lyrics work in tandem with music, they will be weakened when it is extracted and printed on a page;_Preposterous. If that were true, then that expensive hardback of Paul McCartney's complete lyrics that made its way into stores last x-mas season would be a waste of money!

I picked that up while doing the xmas shopping. I soon realized what a trifle it was and returned it. You could say I was a temporary voluptuary.

I dunno, feels like this is a trap set by critics themselves, who for decades have been heralding popular musicians as the “true poets” of their times. By setting up the expectation of profundity, particularly within certain song and genre forms, critics essentially created the situation wherein the lyrics of those forms are judged as “poetry,” not as a separate (but equally important and profound) part of song and language tradition/continuum.

I can't find it online, but I remember reading an interview with Randy Newman (from the 80s I think) where he made a similar argument to this, took issue with rock critics idea of what constitute good lyrics, I think he mentioned Prince as someone who wrote brilliant lyrics but whose name wouldn't necessarily come up in a rockcrit list of 'great' lyricists alongside people who do the pseudo-poetry thing (though maybe Prince is more recognised as a lyric writer these days?). He also talks about his own approach of writing lyrics as dialogue for a character
― soref, Wednesday, 15 February 2023 12:53 (one year ago) link
yeah, he mentions it in a book of Bill Flanagan's about U2; Flanagan also asks Aimee Mann if most of the great pp lyricists of the 20th century have been Jewish (Hammerstein, Simon, Cohen, Newman, etc.).

I (genuinely) like that they pushed much of the extended “context setting” to the review’s second half. If you only have a casual interest in Ono & Lennon, you can stop reading at “… the only difference was that people were, momentarily, listening.”

The internet was a bad idea, guys.
(Seriously, I think Meg is whatever but people have been joking about her being a suck-ass drummer since the day the White Stripes became a thing).

Not only is Meg White a fantastic drummer, Jack also said the White Stripes would be nothing without her. To the journalist who dissed her, keep my ex husband’s ex wife name out of your f*cking mouth.(Please and Thank You) https://t.co/qnnxgT3Rxh— Karen Elson (@KarenElson_) March 14, 2023

meg should finally release her solo album and it should just be 80 minutes of her doing the most sparse, simplest beat ever. no guitars, no vocals, nothing else.
10/10 bnm.

what is Meg up to? do we know? working an office job? independently wealthy? making music for herself? have they ever said that she just wanted to leave the industry or something?
i have no idea. never cared much for this band ... one of those where i dig everything about them except the music. no slight to her, of course. she obviously rules.

very otm for me too (nearly verbatim).
i have no idea what she's up to and think of her as kind of a perfect role model; especially in regards to the shitty criticisms of her style. did she ever say anything in response? i don't remember that she did. kind of passive aggressive non-response of, "well if i suck so much why does seven nation army rock so hard?"

There is a little Kevin Shields in the way Tumor manipulates sounds; the way the triggered samples detonate on late-album highlight “Purified by the Fire” recalls MBV’s “Touched.”
Isn't Touched all Colm's work or is my memory failing me? Anyway good review.

(sorry i'll stop now. the thought of u2 in 1976 on totp has tickled me greatly.)Given the way they looked on TV in 1978, and 76 being before TOTP felt the paradigm shift, I imagine their way of glamming it up could have made them look like Slik or John Miles.
