Didn’t know this:

In recent years, Jolicoeur, had said he was battling congestive heart failure, living with a LifeVest machine affixed to his person.

One of my first favorite groups. Hope he knew how many people were pulling for them to get their proper recognition.

Chris L, Monday, 13 February 2023 03:22 (three years ago)

recall listening to the radio cause they said they were gonna debut the first single off de la soul is dead

lag∞n, Monday, 13 February 2023 03:29 (three years ago)

Good lord, I expected a revived thread meant further reissue news. How awful. Also: what Chris L said.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 13 February 2023 03:49 (three years ago)

i had a huge crush on Trugoy in high school - esp the “Me Myself & I” video.

He has this great chill vibe in their videos. Like he's having a good time but also thinks it's a little funny that he's making music videos.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Monday, 13 February 2023 05:39 (three years ago)

Ok, I will.

Was at Reading Festival, and DeLa were on, ahead of James, Carter USM and TheFall. Anyway, Carter were massive this weekend, and the crowd was full of JimBob/JohnBeast types, and everyone up to then was getting the "You Fat Bastard" treatment.

Anyway, it kicks in after three songs with DelaSoul. Trugoy is all "wait what, stop stop.. You Fat what?...."
Of course, crowd goes nuts and yells back louder.
Trugoy: "Oh yeah? Well, you can ALL! KISS! My BIG! BLACK! ASS!!"

Big cheer from crowd, rest of the set continues to be rapturously received, and I dunno someone buys him breakfast probably...

Diagnosed 2017. They played a bunch of shows in England last year and had 4 booked for April. Were some/all of them living over there? This must have happened sort of quickly? RIP.

this loss is obviously a huge impact for me, but let's not shift focus away the fact that this man dedicated his entire life to his music.

exemplary.

devastating loss, even more heartbreaking just as De La is poised to come in from the streaming wilderness and finally get their due.

one of the most important groups in hip hop history

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 13 February 2023 15:56 (three years ago)

What do Pos and Mase do now? Is it all over for them? It is, right?

They were booked to play the Royal Albert Hall in London in April.

I think a preferred Tribe but I loved DLS more, if that makes sense. Maybe I didn't prefer Tribe. Buhloone is one of my favourite albums of all time.

I will also ride for Stakes is High. That tape literally did not leave my car stereo for a whole summer.

INDEPENDENTS DAY BY STEVEN SPILBERG (President Keyes), Monday, 13 February 2023 16:48 (three years ago)

I still have a bunch of clips I took from their show at Pier 17 - I was so happy to finally see them live and they lived up to all my expectations. I had no idea he had serious health issues. I can't believe he's gone.

birdistheword, Monday, 13 February 2023 17:13 (three years ago)

I love Tribe but De La Soul is definitely the more important of the two

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 13 February 2023 17:37 (three years ago)

Tribe have those elements of volatility and tension / genius that make a better narrative but I can get lost in the soup of De La Soul so much more. So much stirred into the lyrics, always underrated, as well as the sound.

When I was a student trying to teach Italian teens English at a summer school, I played them Say No Go once in a lesson on drugs thinking it'd be a new way to look at the theme. I only properly realised when I had the words up on the board looking at their blank faces, the impossible magnificent density of the language, how the fuck was I going to explain? Um drugs are like pleather mumble mumble moving on.

I hope it's not the end / the concerts could be made some kind of tribute, but that's in vain really. They seemed like a group who really liked each other. Dotting between here and the Yo La Tengo thread I see something similar, a career where being around forever and enjoying each other's company feels like part of the point. Quiet confidence, music as way of life rather than explosion, even if it doesn't make a great story for a doc or a warts and all retrospective. "The business of De La is our friendship," Mase said in an interview I read.

So as everybody has said this feels very cruel now they're about to get their comeback-equivalent hoopla and fuss. At least Dave will have got to see the excitement for the reissues if not the fruits of it.

Can't wait to have a proper copy of Buhloone Mindstate to submerge in when it comes. His verse on Area is my fave, just pure confidence and flute. Life really. RIP.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 13 February 2023 20:32 (three years ago)

So far only two have release dates, and 3 Feet is sold out most places, but I'm keeping my eyes open for Buhloone and Stakes in the near future.

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Monday, 13 February 2023 20:43 (three years ago)

really going to miss the sound of his voice. the timing is so cruel. i hope for a communal moment when the world can celebrate his music next month.

easily on the level of losing Phife and MCA (and similar in some sense as far as the alchemy of the unit), but an even deeper hit for me personally.

I discovered De La via skate videos at age 11 or 12 somewhat out of order, first with I Be Blowin', then The Bizness and then Saturdays. Midnight Marauders was in heavy rotation too (goated for the Award Tour chorus). those albums cracked a new path wide open, as they did for many others.

Stakes is High is my most prized, but the discography is remarkably consistent. loads of great stuff on the later albums. a few rarer and under appreciated favorites:

De La is my favorite rap group, period.

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 February 2023 04:58 (three years ago)

It really sucks that three of my favorites - Tribe, Beastie Boys and De La Soul - are now essentially defunct after losing members to health issues at a fairly young ages.

birdistheword, Tuesday, 14 February 2023 05:04 (three years ago)

i mean, if they all toured together....

POLIZISTEN VERSINKEN IM SCHLAMM (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 February 2023 05:05 (three years ago)

I don't think they'd do this, but if they did with Q-Tip stepping in for MCA and Dave, I'd check it out.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 February 2023 10:24 (three years ago)

I'm surprised SIH is so warmly regarded -- for a while I slotted it as the least of their '90s albums (my college station played "4 More" a few times that year). Of course, now it sounds awesome.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 February 2023 11:17 (three years ago)

stakes is high would be better if it werent all complaining, hard not to consider an underlying guilt about, for lack of a better term, dumbing down their sound

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 February 2023 12:02 (three years ago)

The complaining got them a diss on a 2Pac song—-so, net positive. SIH to me is like the first Rawkus-style backpacker record, as much about hip hop itself than anything else, plus a Mos Def feature.

Excited to hear Stakes Is High again next month, I wrote it off at the time as a basic-sounding disappointment, but I’m loving whatever I can find on YouTube.

I love periodically remembering that Held Down exists

xpost to ansa: "trouble in the water" with dj honda! stakes is high was a lot more "SERIOUSGUYFACE", especially for them, but that song really solidified that they were getting downright introspective and poetic in their old age. dave has a line in his first verse that has been stuck in my head on and off since about 1999—

steppin to backyard parties was a blast
fuckin up our sneakers on the wet grass
remember getting stabbed in your ass?
your moms sat us all down
said we was n/ggas and clowns
but it was just love

man.

(killer ecm sample on the beat, too — prime ilxor bait!)
