I'm so nervous to sell records that I grade - I worry the buyer will think I graded it too high. I should just say they are all roof shingles

xp otm
this was mentioned recently on another thread, but a lot of modern vinyl issues are also related to the post-pressing stages, like drying and packing. The backlogs mean that sometimes corners get cut
― sleeve, Friday, 3 February 2023 21:36 (one year ago) link
and yes, "when in doubt undergrade" is a time honored seller strategy right up there with "never sell to France or Italy"

and yes, "when in doubt undergrade" is a time honored seller strategy right up there with "never sell to France or Italy"ha, when i was selling and shipping tracked via ebay 10-15 years ago the one time something never made it through the post (supposedly...) it was to France.
― city worker, Friday, 3 February 2023 21:42 (one year ago) link
xxp yea the non-fill issue seems completely avoidable, that's what makes it so irritating
― frogbs, Friday, 3 February 2023 21:49 (one year ago) link
never had any problems with France. Italy I had a big package go missing last summer, but I also had one go missing to China that I posted the same day.

Recently moved my phone from Android to IOS. Hit the Discogs app. I might be being a bit thick but I can’t see anyway to sell items from it.

Thanks, will check it out. Shame Tidal isn’t integrated, but can’t have everything.

not yr fault buddy! lol. I actually don't sell online at all, just at shows and sometimes in a private FB group.

re: iOS app. I assume that's to stop Apple taking their standard 30% cut of any transactions that happen in-app.
oh good point. they could still fix the listing experience though.

This Royal Mail strike must be really messing up a lot of international orders. I didn't realize how I often I ordered from the UK (as opposed to Europe) until I started getting messages from sellers about being unable to send my packages and offering refunds. I hope for both selfish and unselfish reasons that this mess doesn't drag on too long
― Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 11 February 2023 22:25 (one year ago) link
It seems like international orders are getting going again — I got an email from Cherry Red about something I pre-ordered that was supposed to have been released on January 27:
Thank you for your e-mail. We are very sorry for the delay caused by the Royal Mail cyber-attack.However, they have now started to dispatch international orders, so it should hopefully be with you within the month:International Incident Bulletin from Royal MailWe at Cherry Red have really appreciated your patience and understanding in this matter.Independent companies such as us would not survive without loyal customers such as you.

it's not the strike that was blocking international orders - there was a cyberattack on Royal Mail that did that (as unperson's message says). there have been delays to orders because of the strikes since last May, but that was affecting all orders, not just international. it is a bit of a nightmare and has stopped me from listing any more items for sale because I don't need the hassle from buyers. I just got 2 international orders over the last 24 hours so good to hear I might actually be able to send them out although fuck knows when they will arrive.

xps huh I wonder if that's why my recent order from Juno was actually shipped from Germany. That hasn't ever happened before, but I guess it's possible they just shipped directly from a warehouse or something.

Some of these have gotten weirdly expensive. I also had no idea there were like three Krautrock comps in this series

just had to refund an order that got sent just as the cyberattack happened. hopefully I can claim it back off Royal Mail.

I ratted out a seller whom I suspected of fraud and Discogs shut down their accounts within a day. Feels kinda good. Hot tip, scammers: if you’re going to make fake listings maybe don’t post identical listings for a rare item at an unbelievably low price from multiple accounts.

I just want the boxes amazon uses - the ones with inner flaps to hold the records tight and protuberant edges to eliminate corner bumps. The only equivalent ones I can find are like $3.50 each.

really not thrilled with this seemingly-recent trend of people rolling into reissue comments with "doesn't sound as good as my ($1000+) original"
this post inspired by a particularly snotty and pretentious review of the mono Piper At The Gates Of Dawn reissue

oh and this one too
"Sounds pretty bloody good to me even though it's not AAA. As do all the Grundman remasters. That is until you hear a mint OG UK press. And good luck getting one cheap. The original just has much more 3D and dynamics."
yeah, fuck you too, dude

yeah nowadays all of the reviews are by wanna be audiophiles who think they know how things are supposed to sound or something, I want to drain their bank accounts

you couldn't pay me to read the reviews people leave on discogs
― budo jeru, Sunday, 16 April 2023 17:21 (one year ago) link
eh I find 'em useful sometimes. the reality is that a lot of modern pressings are just not good. I think it's been steadily getting better since say 2008 or so, when I think a lot of new vinyl was sold without much consideration for people actually listening to it. but bad pressings still get out and the reviewers on discogs will let you know what to avoid.
― frogbs, Sunday, 16 April 2023 17:31 (one year ago) link
agreed, I just hate wading through the snobby stuff, it's still very useful though
― Perverted By Linguiça (sleeve), Sunday, 16 April 2023 17:32 (one year ago) link
Thanks to discogs reviews, I learned that someone else had an off-center pressing of the pressed off-center record I'd just gotten in the mail, so I used it for support when getting my money back from Verve Forecast.
― ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 16 April 2023 22:37 (one year ago) link
Weird question: I just got the latest Lande Hekt lp in the mail today, new and sealed directly from Zia Records in Phoenix. It had the "Violet Marble" hype sticker on the shrink, but I opened it up and it had vinyl of a different variant—red/blue split—inside, which normally comes in a sleeve with different art. So I've got the sleeve and hype sticker from one version, the vinyl from another. This is obviously a packaging error at the plant, but how do I add it to my discogs collection? Does this warrant a new entry? I can't imagine it only happened once, so maybe it does. Anyone have experience with a situation anything like this?
― ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 19 April 2023 05:12 (one year ago) link
Make new entry, sell variant on discogs for 10X baseline price
― dicbo=v2-ubswizzb&hrt (stevie), Wednesday, 19 April 2023 09:23 (one year ago) link
Just your own collection? I'd log it as either one. And then if I went to sell it, I'd explain in the description what you've put here.

speaking of odd scenarios for discogs... I have a spare of a recent first pressing that goes for a high price. The first copy I got was noisy as hell. Visibly fine but basically unlistenable. The company kindly sent me a new one when I wrote to tell them about it. I think I'll put up the first one I got for like 15% of the going rate and describe the deal. I dunno in case anyone ever needs a NM sleeve for the thing. Or thinks they can fix it with an expensive cleaner machine.

ya I've seen that a few times, where a record looks visually perfect but plays like garbage. wonder why that is. it's usually not something you can just clean either.
