everybody who hasn’t voted yet vote for Skeng’s “London” instead of me

ILM's rockist year
Or maybe everyone is into ambient now

Nabozo, Saturday, 21 January 2023 15:38 (one year ago) link

The nominating and voting and waiting for the year-end poll are the best parts of the year music-wise
Then of course the poll results get published

jk, I'm still excited, when do we start

Nabozo, Saturday, 21 January 2023 15:39 (one year ago) link

People being mad about the top results being relatively predictable is too funny. I'd almost like to see a rollout that starts with #1. The bottom half is the real fun. More discoveries.

maf you one two (maffew12), Saturday, 21 January 2023 15:46 (one year ago) link

xp I think when i filled out the form, it said rollout planned to start on Monday

maf you one two (maffew12), Saturday, 21 January 2023 15:46 (one year ago) link

Didn’t vote but interested to see if any of my noms made it. Hagan and TSHA and Ron Trent and Space Ghost, artists of that nature.

omar little, Saturday, 21 January 2023 16:23 (one year ago) link

Was the book in the tracks or albums poll?

Dan Worsley, Saturday, 21 January 2023 16:23 (one year ago) link

i think the book vote was from me (albums poll). it was a cut & paste error, but it is a most excellent read.

stirmonster, Saturday, 21 January 2023 17:30 (one year ago) link

lol, I thought someone had intentionally voted for the Dylan book or something

change display name (Jordan), Saturday, 21 January 2023 17:45 (one year ago) link

My top 2 albums are definite top 10, likely top 5, and I make no apologies for being such a consensus centrist because they’re GREAT.

I also ditched my long-running preference to not vote for tracks from albums I also voted for, because in several cases I think the tracks are more likely to place than the albums.

we're going to defer the rollout for a week so moka and forks can put together the art/blurbs - we'll start on the 30th

TWELVE Michelob stars?!? (seandalai), Saturday, 21 January 2023 18:00 (one year ago) link

I don't really care if anything I voted for places, but it's interesting to see if anything makes the bottom reaches with one or two other votes. I agree that that's the fun part, discovering more music from the depths.

change display name (Jordan), Saturday, 21 January 2023 18:21 (one year ago) link

I didn't vote as an experiment to see if any of my noms actually get votes

sleeve, Saturday, 21 January 2023 18:57 (one year ago) link

You could’ve still voted and seen if any of your noms received >1 vote(??)

Vexatious litigant (morrisp), Saturday, 21 January 2023 19:01 (one year ago) link

Break week! Can anyone nom me a nice book?

maf you one two (maffew12), Saturday, 21 January 2023 19:06 (one year ago) link

xp no I want the records to succeed or fail on their own merits!

sleeve, Saturday, 21 January 2023 19:17 (one year ago) link

admittedly I am being somewhat flippant, I should have given Wau Wau Collectif a boost but things have been crazy in life

sleeve, Saturday, 21 January 2023 19:18 (one year ago) link

that's one of the things I voted for!

imago, Saturday, 21 January 2023 21:13 (one year ago) link

it's real good trust

imago, Saturday, 21 January 2023 21:13 (one year ago) link

Thanks for that graph seandalai. Interesting to see right there the popular peak of the EOY poll was ten years ago.

nashwan, Saturday, 21 January 2023 23:49 (one year ago) link

ILM's rockist year

Haha. My very first thought re the graph.

it's interesting to see if anything makes the bottom reaches with one or two other votes.

I'm pretty sure my own final ballot (certainly significant chunks of my shortlist) included things in the playlists that I subsequently traced back to your nominations, Jordan, so thanks!

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 22 January 2023 01:27 (one year ago) link

I know I say this every year and I disappoint several on the board but results make this the best EOY list I’ve seen so far.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 22 January 2023 02:01 (one year ago) link

Hope imago doesn’t hate it as much as the previous ones lol

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 22 January 2023 02:04 (one year ago) link

probably depends on whether richard dawson outdid his previous best of #3 in the tracks poll

ufo, Sunday, 22 January 2023 03:00 (one year ago) link

does he drop an album every year?

sault bae (voodoo chili), Sunday, 22 January 2023 04:48 (one year ago) link

if you include hen ogledd then i think he has for a while

ufo, Sunday, 22 January 2023 05:45 (one year ago) link

this is a nutty list lemme tell ya

Lovely, you're welcome!

I have a feeling this list might actually be one that I like this year, at least for albums

don't rly care so much about him in tracks

messe de e-102 otoh

oh rats i forgot to ever listen to that album

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Sunday, 22 January 2023 15:17 (one year ago) link

i'm just saying it'd be very funny if "the hermit" won the tracks poll

ufo, Sunday, 22 January 2023 21:48 (one year ago) link

Is it weird that I only allow myself one or two slots for records that were “new to me” as a result of the noms etc? Had a heavy debate between Hagan and the Shabason & Krgovich but decided on the latter, now sort of regretting that

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 January 2023 23:14 (one year ago) link

Ideally we should come across that music during the year as we browse ILM.
Two weeks in January seems way too late to properly absorb music from a huge composite list. Me I wouldn't trust my reactions on a last-minute sell. December and the nomination period is the last moment I try to catch up, but already at that moment I feel like I can't be an ideal listener and appropriate anyone's taste and intimate history with their music.
It's cool to be swayed though, just doesn't seem to happen much to me in practice, maybe I'm resistant.

Nabozo, Monday, 23 January 2023 08:39 (one year ago) link

i feel all that but I've got no hard and fast rules. OK, none other than only one entry per (main) artist per ballot. I used to think no DJ mix or compilation releases, even years where they might've been my most played thing, but i got over that.

fwiw I did not get time to fall in love with 25 albums over the course of the year. 3 in my ballot are recent discoveries. I know I could do a shorter ballot but this was fun.

Curious to see how well SZA does. Does such a late release hurt or help? Don't get something like that every December.

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 23 January 2023 12:49 (one year ago) link

follow your heart imo ime

TWELVE Michelob stars?!? (seandalai), Monday, 23 January 2023 12:51 (one year ago) link

maffew12, but surely the Fievel is Glauque album will probably make the albums list, and that was released in December, too— Zach Phillips has actually done such releases intentionally before, apparently, in trying to evade the EOY maelstrom. Who knows!

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Monday, 23 January 2023 12:54 (one year ago) link

hmm, shoulve nommed Sault's "zip file"

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 23 January 2023 12:54 (one year ago) link

FiG, I don't think I mentioned them here but I came across "Save the Phenomenon" on the playlist and loved it. It's on my tracks ballot. Nothing else on the album came close to that for me.

Now I'll be watching for how it does in comparison to SZA. Much lower I have to think!

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 23 January 2023 12:56 (one year ago) link

Impatient to get started over here, gah.
