the bets Rihanna single is still "If It's Loving That You Want" from her 1st album

agree, tho i always wished those drums were 10x louder somehow! but the best rihanna tune outside of singles will always be 'here i go again'.

anyways, 2007: no one's feeling 'heartbreak'??? ;_;

tsk. (mwah), Thursday, 25 January 2007 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

I like it a lot actually, it's not WOW-ing me but it's really good, do you know who produced it?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 25 January 2007 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

Oh right, Darkchild.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 25 January 2007 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

oh man you would have to pay me so much $ to get me to go to the scream tour, no matter how much i'll follow teen beat R&B

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 25 January 2007 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

same here if Chris Brown was there (his voice on the radio makes me feel like my head's going to explode, so I can only imagine what it would be like on an arena PA system), but w/o CB my price is apparently pretty reasonable. plus I love a good spectacle.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 25 January 2007 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

ha, knew this would happen st8 away... new danjahland trey songz tune is appealing to me on some grimy wonky noizes level

http://www.myspace.com/treysongz

: x

tsk. (mwah), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, that beat is nasty. I love Trey's voice... his first album was really good.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

oh hells yeah on this song

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

that one with twista in the barbershop wz real cute but dude's strategy of flooding the market with mixtape knockoffs wz so tiresome i went right off him. http://i12.tinypic.com/2ccuma9.jpg = fuckin wannabe

tsk. (mwah), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

I never heard much of TS's mixtape stuff but I kinda like the whole strategy of R&B singers doing mixtapes w/ 'freestyles' singin' over rap beats, Raheem Devaughn had a bunch of those plus that new Amerie one. if R. Kelly ever tried jumped on that bandwagon it could be the greatest thing ever.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

Something about how Deja Vu was mastered really bothered me (going to question i missed upthread) where it all sounded really canned where like "Crazy in Love" had sounded like it was blasting you in the face w/ those horns. I donno. I'm not even that big a "Crazy in Love" fan, but to me Deja Vu sounded way too paltry in comparison.

I'm going to stop arguing though cuz i feel like tsk's opinions are more interesting than mine even if they are objectively wrong. :-p

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

haha whatevs

trey wz just ripping off rnb songs tho i think, i wouldnt have minded rap beats.... i thought kev samples wz gonna be good for a laugh (4. T-Pain Is Dead Skit) but he just turned out to be a dick in the end (4. T-Pain Is Dead Skit)

tsk. (mwah), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

insisting on spelling 'dunno' with an o is more objectively wrong than anything i could ever say btw

tsk. (mwah), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

i just spent 3 minutes wondering how else one would spell 'dunno', then i read deej's post carefully

fwiw i agree about the odd masterving on 'deja vu' but it doesn't bother me so much. 'deja vu' is fantastic but pales somewhat next to 'ring the alarm'.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 January 2007 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

I hated "Deja Vu" at first, but I like it now... but it's still the worst song on B-Day, and a really dumb choice for first single (it's so obvious that "Upgrade U" should've been the first single...).

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 25 January 2007 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

no the worst song on b'day is 'green light'! only the solo at the end redeems it

lex pretend (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 January 2007 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

Dude.. "Green Light" is amazing.

UR HOLDING UP TRAFFIC GREEN MEANS GOOOOOOO

It's what the new Amerie song should've sounded like.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 25 January 2007 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, deej always spells "dunno" like that.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 25 January 2007 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

its because i'm going to spell out 'don't know' and then get lazy halfway thru

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 25 January 2007 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

The problem with "Green Light" is that by the time it comes on Beyonce's soul hollerin' has become totally exhausting. It's like, SHUT UP ALREADY.

Conversely, "Irreplaceable" gets a big boost by coming on immediately afterwards.

I did hear an amazing gay house remix of "Ring The Alarm" while out last night. It was followed though by a gay house remix of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" :-(

Re the R&B mixtape thing. Teedra of course did it best. Her freestyle over Lloyd Banks' "On Fire"!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 26 January 2007 06:49 (nineteen years ago)

haha tim you sound like marcello! b's hollering is only exhausting on 'green light' because what she hollers over is so ropey - and yes both ballads benefit, as does 'check on it' where her vocal is totally j-lo can't-be-bothered cool, and then that awesome extended version of 'get me bodied' reminds us how good the hollering was.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Friday, 26 January 2007 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's also the tracklisting order - I really enjoy the first half of the album - "Get Me Bodied" and "Suga Mama" and "Upgrade U" but I think after "Ring The Alarm" (also great) I'm starting to think "okay, no more overblown Beyonce for a while", and then you get "Freakum Dress" and "Green Light" in a row. And "Freakum Dress" is a great song, but even so I'm itching to change the album by that point.

Yeah, love "Check On It" as well.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 26 January 2007 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

I initially hated "Ring the Alarm", but now I'd say "Kitty Kat" is the worst. And soul hollering is always good and never not good. True fact.

The Reverend Rodney J. Greene (R. J. Greene), Friday, 26 January 2007 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

How can you not like Kitty Kat? She spends the whole song talking to her vagina! That's next-level awesomeness.

did hear an amazing gay house remix of "Ring The Alarm" while out last night.

DId you hear the house remix of "Listen"? It's also very awesome.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 26 January 2007 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

How can you not like Kitty Kat? She spends the whole song talking to her vagina!

Congratulations, you answered your own question!

I didn't like the singles from Trey Songz' first album, but "Wonder Woman" is pretty damn great.

The Reverend Rodney J. Greene sings you a dirge (R. J. Greene), Sunday, 28 January 2007 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe you guys don't like the Musiq song. It's so awesome.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 28 January 2007 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

I think Supa Dups' Black Chiney Remix of "Unfaithful" works better than the original as a day-in-day-out listen-to-the-thing track.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 28 January 2007 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

some half-asleep thoughts:

'heartbreak' is AMAZING, it's so disco-infused! this is reminding me of cherrelle! everything in the richcraft vein has been very taut and teetering-on-tightrope-even-as-you-lose-control poised (which is why it works best on songs about that moment just before you fall in love), but 'heartbreak' is totally uninhibited about abandoning itself to those yummy disco strings. it's fully committed to...what exactly? i must listen to these lyrics more closely, is she full of determination and spirit to save herself from a bad relationship by...getting him back?

another natasha song, 'so sick', with clipse: minimal beat, cooing ghostly verses, i like.

and monica is fucking awesome in this video. love the song, i will never tire of generic crunk'n'b, especially not when it sounds like a hollabackesque marching band.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Sunday, 28 January 2007 01:58 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not usually one to bitch about people not being able to sing, but Natasha...gross.

The Reverend Rodney J. Greene sings you a dirge (R. J. Greene), Sunday, 28 January 2007 02:09 (nineteen years ago)

blehhh @ 'so sick', the worst kind of insulting half-assed 'club banger'

gr8 sleeve tho

three weeks pass...
New R. Kelly: [Removed Illegal Link]

Also, can we talk about the amazing turnaround for Robin Thicke? His album, which is excellent BTW, was totally flopping and then all of a sudden "Lost Without You" starts getting major play and the album is on it's way to Platinum status! How great is that? "Lost Without You"is currently #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop chart and it's climbing up the Hot 100 (currently @ #25).

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 22 February 2007 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

His album is kinda doldrumish. There's only three songs I care about and two of them are old as fuck. (The mambo one being the third. It cracks me up.)

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 February 2007 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

That was in reference to Thicke, if that wasn't clear enough.

Has whitey ever had a #1 R&B hit before?

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 February 2007 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, I'm really happy with the fact that Thicke's big hit is a nice quiet subtle jam that I never get tired of hearing, as opposed to those songs with Lil Wayne and Pharrell that I absolutely hated.

what was the R. Kelly link that got removed, btw? he's having a really good year so far, with the awesome version of "Flirt" w/ T.I. and T-Pain, the song from Daddy's Little Girls, the Ciara and Fat Joe remixes, etc.

has anyone heard the Sunshine Anderson album? I almost checked out just on the strength of her hit from a few years back, but the words "Matthew Knowles" on the back of the CD scared me off.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 22 February 2007 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Stay scared.

Andy K, Thursday, 22 February 2007 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

r kelly single is great
why didn't you like "Shooter" Al? I think I like all songs that use that bassline. I feel like asking you about why you didn't like an indie crossover rap song is like asking why the sky is blue but

deej, Thursday, 22 February 2007 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

(other examples of the bassline = freaks of the industry and that song off the first soulja slim album with Mia X. whats that bassline from? I know I've heard the o.g. before but i cant think of what it is)

deej, Thursday, 22 February 2007 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

It's from Donna Summers' "Love to Love You, Baby". "Freaks of the Industry" is as excellent as songs get.

How is "Shooter" indie?

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 February 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

I just think "Shooter" comes off really slapdash and awkward, all those little 8 bar verses that sound shoehorned into the beat. I mean, Wayne raps more on a lot of his R&B features than he does on that song. plus that weird little part where Thicke's voice gets all squeaky and goes "shoo-shoo-shoo-shooter" is the most annoying shit ever.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

oh my god, the new ciara video. SO FIERCE.

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

...and i'm talking to her next week!

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 February 2007 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

Just curious, Alex. Did you hear Thicke's original version before Wayne's or no?

The Reverend, Friday, 23 February 2007 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

nah. is it much different aside from the lack of raps?

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 23 February 2007 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno. I haven't heard it either, but I could more readily imagine this: "I just think 'Shooter' comes off really slapdash and awkward, all those little 8 bar verses that sound shoehorned into the beat." coming from someone who heard the OG version first.

The Reverend, Friday, 23 February 2007 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

Has whitey ever had a #1 R&B hit before?

Polow-produced new Kelly Rowland single:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIjNAB7jAGA

I love the percussion. It's kind of underwhelming, I wanted her to come out with an ANTHEM, this is just 'good'.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

where did 'owner of a lonely heart' end up on the R&B charts.

deej, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

i really like that kelly r song on one listen. but where is 'gotsta go'! that was amazing.

lex pretend, Friday, 2 March 2007 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

The new Ne-Yo single "Because Of You" is totally classic. Is that a slap-bass I hear? OMG.
