The early singles work really well in the context of the album. Loving the sophisti-pop vibes on a few of these tracks. On my second run through now and it's hitting the spot.

The Ghost Club, Thursday, 20 October 2022 21:30 (three years ago)

Far Away is great. Love the Scritti Politti-esque synth bassline in the chorus.

The Ghost Club, Thursday, 20 October 2022 21:41 (three years ago)

Ok so Beach House still misses. But Western Wind does work much better in the album context. Still not a great single, but it adds some nice mid-album atmosphere.

The last two singles (Talking to Yourself, Three Loneliest Time) both slay on the record.

The Ghost Club, Thursday, 20 October 2022 21:46 (three years ago)

Lol the*

The Ghost Club, Thursday, 20 October 2022 21:46 (three years ago)

Are y'all too busy listening to Taylor?

This album is really good, much better than Dedicated. Much more variety.

The Ghost Club, Friday, 21 October 2022 05:34 (three years ago)

It's late in America, tomorrow is going to be a fun day. Can't wait to hear this.

Bee OK, Friday, 21 October 2022 05:39 (three years ago)

it leaked like two weeks ago so there's a million other things to hear today. i think it's a little worse than dedicated just for "beach house" but still pretty good overall

ufo, Friday, 21 October 2022 05:41 (three years ago)

Fair enough. And yeah Beach House isn't great...

The Ghost Club, Friday, 21 October 2022 05:44 (three years ago)

Far Away being good seconded!

imago, Friday, 21 October 2022 12:56 (three years ago)

Jesus, I somehow hadn't heard Western Wind until now

imago, Friday, 21 October 2022 13:07 (three years ago)

Works so well in context!

I think the only track which hasn't really convinced me yet is the opener, weirdly, cos people seem to love that one

imago, Friday, 21 October 2022 13:10 (three years ago)

WW rules i don't know what the naysayers are on about

Beach House though, that had me worried

Look forward to sitting down with the whole thing

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 21 October 2022 14:26 (three years ago)

this record is just so fucking great

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 21 October 2022 15:46 (three years ago)

world stops and the autumn leaves freeze in time mid-fall for the entirety of "western wind" every time i play it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 21 October 2022 16:34 (three years ago)

sheesh maybe this is her best album

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 21 October 2022 16:50 (three years ago)

I like this album. Also I like "Beach House," it's her most convincing disco track.

This album is fun

Bee OK, Friday, 21 October 2022 19:40 (three years ago)

Beach House isn't great, I find it cringey, both lyrically and musically.

The title track is a way better disco bop, after she yells: "I'm coming back for you!" Iconic moment. Then those disco strings!

Talking to Yourself is def the best single from the bunch imo.

The Ghost Club, Friday, 21 October 2022 19:41 (three years ago)

"beach house" feels like its knowingly cringey, which makes it...camp?

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Friday, 21 October 2022 19:44 (three years ago)

Technically I think it's knowingly camp, which makes it ironic. I don't know, it's a goofy song, hard to hate. She's kind of goofy! That's what charmed me about her live show, she's got kind of a shtick going.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 21 October 2022 19:54 (three years ago)

And I agree, the title track is her best disco. But Beach House is fun too.

Bends is driving me crazy because I'm certain the melody of the verse is basically the same as a Momus song, but I can't figure out which one. I think I might be thinking of Voyager, but I'm not really sure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqKDUXp2gDk

Almost certainly a coincidence, just too weird to imagine Jepsen listening to Momus of all people.

Anyway, this album rules, can't stop listening to it.

OneSecondBefore, Friday, 21 October 2022 19:59 (three years ago)

This album is good, not great. I think it may be a grower. Beach House does kinda suck and take you out of it, I do wish it wasn’t there. Nothing really sticks out, which is a shame, she has had some great star making moments and this seems to lack a “Too much” or “Boy Problems”. It’s a nice pop star “growing up” record though, like Taylor has been doing for a while.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 21 October 2022 20:34 (three years ago)

On a first listen I love this album. The back half I think really nails that convalescent feeling of coming out of a long isolation, the emotional neediness of it, that mix of joy and gratitude and fragility and a sense that the good things may not last. "Bends" into "Western Wind" is perfect.

Lily Dale, Saturday, 22 October 2022 20:40 (three years ago)

Can't wait to listen to this in full. She was amazing last night in Berkeley

Half Japanese Breakfast (outdoor_miner), Saturday, 22 October 2022 22:12 (three years ago)

Did she play songs from the album? I've been wondering about her setlists, since she started touring before the album was out.

Lily Dale, Sunday, 23 October 2022 05:20 (three years ago)

she's playing a bunch of the new album on this tour yes

ufo, Sunday, 23 October 2022 05:57 (three years ago)

ooh bullion co-produced/wrote "bends" and "far away"

ufo, Sunday, 23 October 2022 06:01 (three years ago)

After one listen, I definitely like The Loneliest Time more than Dedicated, which never really hooked me apart from a couple songs. we'll see how it compares to EMOTION after a few more listens. "Beach House" still sounds out of left field tho, not sure I'll ever really like that song

Vinnie, Sunday, 23 October 2022 07:10 (three years ago)

"shooting star" reminds me of the last kylie album, i really like it but wish it rode out the coda more

ufo, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 08:12 (three years ago)

just like with EMOTION, the bonus tracks are amazing. "Anxious" might be better than anything on the album

Vinnie, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 07:33 (three years ago)

I didn’t realise that was a bonus track, seems odd not to be part of the album to me.

I guess thinking back it’s a classic CRJ move, see “Drive”

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 08:51 (three years ago)

Heh, I similarly wasn't aware the EMOTION bonus tracks were bonus tracks when I first heard it. I just thought it was a very long, very good album

Vinnie, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 10:08 (three years ago)

I wish the whole album was co-written by Bullion. Far-away and Bends are great. I want more of that.

Bends to Western Wind is indeed a perfect combo.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 10:09 (three years ago)

Xxxpost: maybe CRJ doesn’t know Momus but Bullion might.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 10:11 (three years ago)

i don't think "bends" is ripping "voyager" at least

ufo, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 11:11 (three years ago)

lol at some point it came out that haim co-wrote "making the most of the night" under a pseudonym and i never knew until now?

ufo, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 12:10 (three years ago)

I finally listened to the song "The Loneliest Time." It sounds like it's going for an Olivia Newton John vibe.

“uhh”—like, this is an insane oatmeal raisin cookie “uhh” (President Keyes), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 13:57 (three years ago)

Not hearing Momus per se but it does sounds like german electropop from early 00’s - backing track at least - something like Barbara Morgenstern, Lali Puna, isan… stuff like that.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 14:38 (three years ago)

"the loneliest time" is excellent. that and "western wind" outclass everything else on here.

the rest is fine, but those are just excellent!

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 October 2022 15:19 (three years ago)

lol at some point it came out that haim co-wrote "making the most of the night" under a pseudonym and i never knew until now?

Huh I never knew that either. When I heard Sia's version of it, it made perfect sense that she co-wrote - it's a very Sia melody. I'm not sure what part Haim wrote, but the chorus has the quick pace of some of their songs

Vinnie, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 15:48 (three years ago)

Add my name to the list of ilxors who love "Western Wind". Suggests an alternate universe where she collaborated on an album with Benoit and Sergio.

Don't get the hate for "Beach House"! If No Doubt got back together and released it I'd love it. And I love it this way too

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 29 October 2022 17:20 (three years ago)

'western wind' definitely one of my songs of the year.

ꙮ (map), Saturday, 29 October 2022 17:30 (three years ago)

Might be just the pop duet thing but Loneliest Time is giving me vibes of Annie/Jake Shears on Neon Lights

kinder, Saturday, 29 October 2022 18:22 (three years ago)

two weeks pass...

Okay, late to hearing this, but it really is terrific, especially the back half. Damn. Cut "Beach House" and it comes within swinging distance of flawless, imho. Absolutely love "Western Wind", "Go Find" and "The Loneliest Time" in particular.

another beach house hater wtf

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 17 November 2022 00:11 (three years ago)

and he's probably gonna hurt your feelings

enochroot, Thursday, 17 November 2022 01:21 (three years ago)

It’s not that it’s terrible, it sticks out too much.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 17 November 2022 01:28 (three years ago)

I don't hate it, it's just not great and sticks out like a sore thumb, ruining the flow.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 17 November 2022 15:08 (three years ago)

i can sense your hate, don't lie
