It feels somewhat idiosyncratic, as if it reflects the reviewers' "personal favorites" (which is actually cool & fitting)
How does one file a list that isn't a reflection of a reviewer's "personal favorites"? On getting my ballot I thought, "Ah, let me vote for a buncha tunes from thte '90s I still enjoy."

Great! As for what a more "calculated"-feeling list is like, I think One Eye Open nailed it pretty well.
― "Cool ranch dressing!" (morrisp), Tuesday, 27 September 2022 20:06 (three years ago)
Is "Gold Soundz" at #40 still the highest song from a male-fronted US indie rock act? When it was #1 in 2010, it was joined in the top 10 by Neutral Milk Hotel's "Holland 1945," which now appears to be off the list entirely (unless I missed it). (I'm not complaining or bemoaning this development, just an interesting reflection of the site's shift over time.)
― jaymc, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 20:10 (three years ago)
Thanks for posting the list. I think it’s a good list tbh, and I like most if not all of those songs to some degree. I just hate the way pitchfork looks and feels so much, there’s a reason I spend more time on ILX than most other places on the internet— too much blinking and rapidly moving ads for me. Also sorry to offend, Alfred and others— i feel like utter shit at the moment and was projecting my frustration with my face (aka my seasonal allergies) onto the nature of the list in the first place.
― broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 September 2022 20:27 (three years ago)
I am surprised that “Over the Ocean” by Low didn’t make it, tbh— and also think it makes sense that the two SY are from Goo, as that’s the only songs record SY made in the decade that was really worth a shit, if we’re being honest— there are maybe four songs off of the rest of SY’s discography during the 90s that are truly excellent, even if they work as albums.
― broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 September 2022 20:30 (three years ago)
Notable omissions off the top of my head:
Chumbawamba - TubthumpingSemisonic - Closing TimeMarcy Playground - Sex and CandyGoo Goo Dolls - Iris
Not all of these are great songs. But they are iconically 90s. Guess we all lived through a different decade though huh.
― The Ghost Club, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 20:30 (three years ago)
Tho “Youth Against Fascism” would have gotten my vote over “Tunic”
― broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 September 2022 20:31 (three years ago)
Arguably The Diamond Sea could also have taken Tunic's place, given that it signalled the shift SY would take over the next decade, and is so tied up with Lollapalooza lore.
― The Ghost Club, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 20:34 (three years ago)
iconically 90s was "macarena". why isn't macarena #1?
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 20:35 (three years ago)
It is meant to be a list of great (not "iconic") songs, lol

I was just saying we should take "Protect Ya Neck" out of the canon to make more room for Garth Brooks

What's Up? does throw me though because why not e.g. Two Princes (a bit better), Mmm x4 (a fair bit better), In the Meantime (a lot better)

"got your money" should've been number one
Not surprised that Ray of Light is higher than Vogue, more surprised that Vogue was included at all, I thought that was now viewed as cultural appropriation. Ray of Light rules.

Sex and Candy is obscure here in Britain (a minor hit though) but even so the way it blew up in the US, especially at that eleventh hour, confuses me. It's a bit tuneless and nothingy?

I am an “elder millenial” lmfao (born 84), and I was obsessed with music from a young age, so I remember many of these songs very fondly. I also know that ILM hates “What’s Up” but what’s up is that you’re wrong, that song is great— I have fond memories of rollerblading to it at the roller rink whilst wearing a cutoff neon t-shirt and these weird loose fitting bicycle shorts I was obsessed with at the time. The rollerrink eventually turned hands because they were selling meth and weed on the side. all hail the 90s

what i hate the most is "rebel girl" in the top 10, bikini kill were just never that good. "what's up?" is also an annoying meme song that has no place here
main thing that's obviously missing to me is "regret"

another interesting absence is "roygbiv"
― ufo, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 21:12 (three years ago)
I was on the Kula Shaker wikipedia the other day and saw this: Mills commented in 2016, "The musical styles on K are mainstream now. [In 1996] people didn't know how to understand it or where to place it, so all that was left to do was deride it."[22]
What about mainstream 2016 music did he believe originated with K?
― you can see me from westbury white horse, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 21:14 (three years ago)
Wow to that Kula quote. Baffling.
Rogygbiv is an interesting omission, given BoC's enormous influence on the next decade (IDM, hauntology etc.)
― The Ghost Club, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 21:18 (three years ago)
I suspect that may be touched upon in the albums list
― you can see me from westbury white horse, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 21:25 (three years ago)
this isn't necessarily a bad thing! (perhaps 'what's up' really has stood the test of time.) but it feels like the sort of list i might make if forced to rank the 60s
'well, we need some country, how about the ballad of the green berets?'
