Are the powers that be ok with me doing a Wilco poll next? Would welcome help with images!

― Indexed, Tuesday, August 30, 2022 9:57 AM (one hour ago)

#115 is all yours Indexed as I don't see anyone else ready to do a poll at this time. I will also vote in a Wilco poll.

All right, I will plan to start this up soon. Thanks Bee OK.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 30 August 2022 22:23 (three years ago)

Are there best practices on tabulating results captured someplace? Or someone with experience who could answer some questions or share a google sheet with me?

I had planned to just give 1 point to the lowest ranking track/album and the number of tracks/albums to the highest ranking track/album. e.g., in a 5 album poll, 5 points. Is this standard? I am struggling to back into the math used in some of the prior polls but it seems like higher point values were assigned. Not sure if that would make a difference mathematically though.

I also don't totally know how to handle partial ballots. In the above example, if someone only lists 3 albums, would you assign those albums 5, 4, and 3 points, OR 3, 2, and 1 point? Or something else?

Thanks!

5, 4, and 3 in the latter case

Vance Vance Devolution (sic), Tuesday, 6 September 2022 16:54 (three years ago)

here is that original doc: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-6UZjUc-eioPify1wTOMXe_dSsjOQ6pBu0ZjT0I7CCQ/edit#gid=0

I have always used that formula but added 10 point so number one would always get 50 points: 50, 36, 33, 30, 28, 26, 25, 24...You might need to start at 60 since this is a 40 track ballot.

Number ones always get the same score regardless of how many are submitted.

I have also done both, the same above scoring for albums and the simple 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 scoring but yeah all number ones got the 5 in that case.

Hope this helps.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:02 (three years ago)

I'd like to do a Canterbury Scene poll at some point. No time to do it now, and would probably need a bit of help, but maybe next year sometime.

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:09 (three years ago)

looking at that spreadsheet I have never used the same number twice...so the number would keep going down for each placement: 25, 24, 23, 22, 21 20...

Bee OK, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:11 (three years ago)

I will add you to the list

xpost

Bee OK, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:12 (three years ago)

Thanks, Bee OK. So you're saying you effectively give a #1 a "bonus" of 10 extra points, yes? Do you do that for the Albums too?

Indexed, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:18 (three years ago)

No, sorry when I say add 10 points I mean the overall scoring. So adding 10 means that the original starts at 40 points but I have always started at 50 points and then worked my way down.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 18:25 (three years ago)

50, 36, 33, 30, 28, 26, 25, 24...

So number one does get 4 more points than number two which gets 3 more points than number three...

Albums too but the simple 5, 4, 3 scoring sort of works better for Albums.

Taking Sides

50, 46, 43, 40, 38, 36, 35, 34

vs

50, 36, 33, 30, 28, 26, 25, 24

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 19:09 (three years ago)

I've always used the top one. I think it's more important to check ballots for spelling and punctuation, e.g. in this ballot make sure "Jesus, Etc." and "Jesus Etc" are counted together in the pivot table

nate woolls, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 19:24 (three years ago)

lol, no wonder there is some confusion:

I meant: 50, 46, 43, 40, 38, 36, 35, 34

Going too fast and doing other things...

Bee OK, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 19:25 (three years ago)

thanks everyone!

Indexed, Tuesday, 6 September 2022 19:37 (three years ago)

I always used a linear scale, which is what the EOY polls use, so for poll of ballot size 40, #1 gets 80 points, #2 gets 78 points, and so on, all the way down to #40 gets 2 points

ufo, Wednesday, 7 September 2022 00:37 (three years ago)

There's a pivot table in the spreadsheet? No wonder I haven't been able to figure out how it works!

At some point you've got to sort the song list alphabetically so you can easily spot typos and such. Or paste the song list in an empty tab and then "remove doubles"--if any title appears twice, one of them has a typo.

Hideous Lump, Wednesday, 7 September 2022 05:02 (three years ago)

three weeks pass...

I'm going to add The Police to my queue.

I'm going to do Super Furry Animals in the next six months (the timing feels right), just a heads up.

Not necessarily volunteering (I'm no good with images or math), but just wanna throw this one out there to gauge interest: Poppy Bush Interzone singles.

Les hommes de bonbons (cryptosicko), Friday, 30 September 2022 15:06 (three years ago)

Please add me to the list to run a Punk tracks poll 74-84. With war in europe, stagflation crisis winter coming, and general malaise, seems like the right time.

mig (guess that dreams always end), Friday, 30 September 2022 17:41 (three years ago)

Noted, I'm not going to update the list anytime soon but I think this can go after Wilco if so inclined.

Bee OK, Friday, 30 September 2022 18:46 (three years ago)

Going to proceed with Punk tracks poll tomorrow unless someone with more seniority in requesting a poll would like to step in this weekend.

mig (guess that dreams always end), Saturday, 8 October 2022 15:03 (three years ago)

Punk tracks poll to roll out first week of Nov.

mig (guess that dreams always end), Monday, 10 October 2022 00:18 (three years ago)

Since that one is delayed is anyone willing to run a poll or even taking over that poll? I was thinking about running it but that would be a disservice as my knowledge in Punk has too many gaps.

Bee OK, Thursday, 20 October 2022 04:23 (three years ago)

i would totally run a sparklehorse poll right now if there is enough interest

i've got sparklehorse fever, and the only cure is to systematically go through the entire discography repeated times and administer a ballot poll

Karl Malone, Monday, 24 October 2022 21:56 (three years ago)

That's a poll for which I could only really submit a ballot from one record (Vividixie) but would appreciate the rollout and enforced poll-result listening.

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Tuesday, 25 October 2022 15:21 (three years ago)

yeah, i feel confident that you'd love the rest! i started with It's a Wonderful Life in high school, and only really listened to Viva closely for the first time a few weeks ago! since then i have listened to it many times. it rules.

one intriguing thing about a Sparklehorse ballot poll is that i really have no clue what the consensus is on either the album or which songs are the ones that everyone knows. the first couple albums have songs that sound like they should have been hits during a time when "alternative music" was still a thing. but then i'm youtubing and i see them making their "american television debut" on craig kilbourn, playing "it's a wonderful life", and you can just see that some of his most pop-friendly hits had been slept on

one reason NOT to do a Sparkhorse poll, though: maybe there just isn't enough. 4 albums (Viva, Good Morning Spider, It's a Wonderful Life, Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain), In the Fishtank with Fennesz, and Dark Night of the Soul (which I need to listen to more, it's hard to categorize). Some singles, EPs. But maybe that's not enough.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 15:37 (three years ago)

you could add the two dancing hoods albums to a sparklehorse poll.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 20:14 (three years ago)

yeah...very diminishing marginal returns there, though, i think. i'm not a huge fan of what i've heard. they are definitely catchy and replacements like at some points, but i just finished watching the 1998 dutch documentary on youtube and he refers to them as "that pop band" or something like that and relays a story about how he boring he ended up finding that, how leaving that behind led to his first "good music"

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 21:36 (three years ago)

yeah, they were a very different band. but they had their fans, and maybe there's a discovery or two still waiting to be found, or at least a connection to be made between his "that pop band" roots and what he went on to do? just a thought!

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 23:17 (three years ago)

oh for sure! sorry, i didn't mean to seem like i was shutting it down. i would definitely include that, and if nothing else be interested in what everyone's favorite songs were from the pre-sparklehorse days! i'm still very much in learning mode and haven't listened to some stuff yet, so i'd be open to absolutely anything that involves linkous.

it's sad, because way back in the day, the way i learned about sparklehorse was through radiohead. the "wish you were here" collab. but the thing was, back then it was the audiogalaxy era for me, which meant lots of freely downloaded songs of unknown provenance and sometimes fakes. so when i heard "radiohead' doing wish you were here, with Linkous' voice, i immediately thought "false". now, of course, listening to it i hear that it's radiohead (or at least some of them?) playing instrumentally while linkous sings. to my warped radiohead-obsessed mind of the time, i could not fathom that thom yorke would let anyone else sing, other then himself. so when I heard heard Linkous' voice it just sounded like "fake-Thom" to me. good lord i was fucked up.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 25 October 2022 23:27 (three years ago)

i think i am just going to post a top 15 on a sparklehorse thread and be done with it

FUCK IT
