She has some great songs and some are worthy of a Top 50 placing but ILM didn't see it that way. and yes I'm surprised.

“Bad guy” doesn’t really sound brilliant to me. It’s just barely better than most mainstream music.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 20 August 2022 03:35 (one year ago) link

“Bury a Friend” or “Everything I Wanted” both got three votes. I voted "Bad Guy" in the end.

Bee OK, Saturday, 20 August 2022 03:39 (one year ago) link

That said I wouldn’t vote “bury a friend” over “black skinhead” which sort of have the same template. As much as I don’t like Kanye.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 20 August 2022 03:55 (one year ago) link

“Black skinhead” is a great gym song.

When Susanne Sundfør's Ten Love Songs was new and people were talking about it a lot, it was commonly referred to as "Goth ABBA." Kinda funny, but also kinda true.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 20 August 2022 04:50 (one year ago) link

Goth ABBA is otm

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 20 August 2022 06:53 (one year ago) link

whats crazier, two successive carly rae songs in the top 5, two susanne sundfor songs at all, or imago explaining that there's no afroPOP because this list is tilted towards POP

― xheugy eddy (D-40), Saturday, 20 August 2022 00:43 (six hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

not what i said, and this list should be goddamn grateful to have had any sundfor let alone two

imago, Saturday, 20 August 2022 07:03 (one year ago) link

Thanks pollrunners!

It's always a bit weird for me to see stuff like Sondfor or Destroyer near the top of a tracks list - despite the fact that I loved and voted for the albums from whence they came - because they feel like they fall a bit outside the (airquote) 'public' notion of pop that I associate these tracks polls with, even though in truth those tracks are much less obscure to the typical ILMer (and indeed perhaps the public generally) than most of the more self-consciously pop/populist tracks that occupied the top of my ballot.

voodoo chilli otm up thread although I would add another
no future no thug no gucci mane means y'all were living in a different decade to me.

was p sure that no kpop would place as mostly we all like different artists.

oscar bravo, Saturday, 20 August 2022 08:20 (one year ago) link

Susanne Sundfor sounds more pop to me than say that track from The Knife. But then again our #1 and #2 are songs I don’t think I’ve ever heard in the wild.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 20 August 2022 14:05 (one year ago) link

Lana del Rey is another one. She’s quite famous but I’ve never heard her music out in the wild. Not sure what the context to hear her music would be. Boutique hotel lobbies? Hipster clothing stores?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 20 August 2022 14:08 (one year ago) link

Venice Bi…. Beach?

big movers, hot steppers + long shaker intros (breastcrawl), Saturday, 20 August 2022 14:14 (one year ago) link

Anyways I’d say The Knife, Todd Terje and Lana del Rey are more - or similarly removed from the public notion of a pop song than Sundfor or Destroyer.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 20 August 2022 14:18 (one year ago) link

Lol sorry breastcrawl, when looking for images I think I found that one of Lana on Venice Beach and my brain changed the information when writing the title

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 20 August 2022 14:20 (one year ago) link

I can’t even seem to find the list, but did “Gas Pedal” or “Red Nose” place? what about “Bandz” ?

In a sense I am glad I didn’t realize this poll was going on— from the partial list that I have seen and discussion, it seems like a lot of stuff that bewilders me made the cut.

The remix of LDR's "Summertime Sadness" was a genuine hit that got a lot of radio airplay in the U.S., and probably helped solidify her fan base, but it's true that she's now more of an art-pop icon and critics' darling than a chart mainstay.

I'm surprised "Wildest Moments" finished ahead of "Imagine It Was Us," though I'm partially to blame for not voting. ("Imagine It Was Us" would've been in my top 5.)

jaymc, Saturday, 20 August 2022 14:41 (one year ago) link

Ah yeah forgot about that “summertime sadness” remix, that one was huge.

the (airquote) 'public' notion of pop that I associate these tracks polls with

I was curious how many of the top 100 were "singles" and which were "deep tracks", though I don't really understand how or if that distinction exists in 2022.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 20 August 2022 15:05 (one year ago) link

It seems to, at least with regard to the artists I’m familiar with here (the pop artists).

"Not bad" results. I expected more internal outrage but overall can't complain despite a few unacceptably low placements:

39 Miguel - Adorn
47 Fetty Wap - Trap Queen
112 Ariana Grande - thank u, next
139 Janet Jackson - No Sleeep
141 Big Boi ft. Cutty - Shutterbugg
152 D'Angelo and The Vanguard - Another Life
169 Robyn - Hang With Me
183 Tkay Maidza - U-Huh
191 Playboi Carti - Magnolia
200 Rihanna - Needed Me
543 Young Thug - Stoner (was i the 1 vote? i dont remember)

It’s telling that the tracks I mention didn’t get nominated when every single one was better than anything Swift has ever released.

"Red Nose" was #693 in the 2013 tracks poll, while "Gas Pedal" didn't get any votes (not sure it was even nominated). The fact that they didn't place in a decade poll is telling of the fact that Sage the Gemini is (shocker) less popular than Taylor Swift.

Telling as in my tastes, which I am not claiming are superior, just have very little to do with popular consensus around here— hence why I stay away from decade and probably year-end polls from here on, I find getting invested in them emotionally fraught because very little that I value ever places

I took neither the nominations nor the voting process very seriously, and I co-ran eight EOY polls. It's just frivolous fun with great looking pictures.

five of mine placed which is I think slightly lower than what is usually the case with end of year polls

I have a funny story

I used to have this job as a parking lot attendant* and there was this divorced couple that I saw regularly meeting in the parking lot one summer to effect transfer of their daughter, who was maybe 7yo

So early one Sunday morning, dad pulls into the lot in his red convertible, daughter in the front passenger seat**, and they are just blasting I mean positively BLASTING the song "Video Games" loud enough to to be heard blocks away; loud enough to make joggers stopped at intersections rotate not just their heads but their entire persons scanning the area for danger; loud enough to put to flight birds who have heretofore spent their whole lives among the branches of a nearby willow oak

His daughter seemed to be enjoying the moment. I couldn't tell how his ex-wife in her parked car felt about watching this.

———
*: If it matters/helps you picture it, this was the "make sure people who park at this downtown grocery store aren't boarding a bus to the college campus" type of parking attendant job, rather than the "collect money from drivers and make the arm go up and down" type

**: This part of the memory may not be true

I don't know what constitutes 'in the wild' by my local rock station (in Atlanta) used to play "Mariners Apartment Complex" with some regularity.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Sunday, 21 August 2022 21:17 (one year ago) link

"young & beautiful" was pretty prominent in the wild

Thought experiment: imagine it's "Feel You" that's 9:41 minutes long and "Venice Bitch" that's 4:11. Holter inevitably brings some actual ideas for filling an extra 5+ minutes and the world is a marginally better place. *ducks*

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 22 August 2022 00:01 (one year ago) link

I like Feel You. Was only introduced to Venice Bitch through this poll, but that LDR song and that video are all-time great

Dan S, Monday, 22 August 2022 00:40 (one year ago) link

whoops, just remembered I might prefer Black Hearted Brother's "UFO" to "Sugar for the Pill"

sloop johnnin' skater (geoffreyess), Monday, 22 August 2022 03:05 (one year ago) link

I voted for Have You in My Wilderness and NFR! rather than those individual songs, but I like them both at their current lengths. "Feel You" is a delicate expression that shouldn't go on for too long, while "Venice Bitch" is lost in rumination.
