i think as afrobeats becomes more of the fabric of tasteful anglosphere pop, more folks who voted in this poll will start voting for afrobeats songs. as a person who voted in this poll, my taste has certainly been shaped by breastcrawl, rob, dog latin, and all the others in that thread, and hopefully as that thread continues to thrive, folks will become a bit less anglocentric in their tastes.

there’s always going to be enough people (hi lurkers!) to vote “Archie, Marry Me” (or whatever is considered the most generic song here) into the list

Hi!
(I am definitely not posting my ballot at the end of this thing)

enochroot, Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:13 (one year ago) link

speaking of non-anglocentric music, i'm surprised that there hasn't been any k-pop or j-pop. a few of those songs usually sneak into the year-end polls.

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:16 (one year ago) link

as someone with an extreme amount of nostalgia for ilm of the late 00s and early 2010s, i'm not seeing a lot of that "canon" represented itp. not that there's anything wrong with that--people change, i didn't vote etc--just some songs that felt like 'local anthems' of the board at the time that i hold dear... lightweight jammin, dj quck ft. suga free - nobody, lemme smang it, grove st party, gucci gucci, benoit & sergio/invisible conga people. to name a few. not to say no one else on the internet rated those songs but they each had some cachet here. cool to see 'ass on the floor' place tho

flopson, Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:21 (one year ago) link

i definitely voted for "nobody" ft. suga free haha, what a banger

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:22 (one year ago) link

If we lost “gucci gucci” on the way here it’s not that bad.

Would have loved to see invisible conga people, benoit & sergio or dj quik in here though! But did those tracks actually ranked high on those eoy polls?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:23 (one year ago) link

Was there a 90’s EOD poll?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:27 (one year ago) link

Would have loved to see invisible conga people, benoit & sergio or dj quik in here though! But did those tracks actually ranked high on those eoy polls?

― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, August 18, 2022 6:23 PM (two minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

not particularly, tho 'ass on the floor' was #77 in the 2010 poll, #31 in this poll

flopson, Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:28 (one year ago) link

many xposts but I don't know that any more country will show up here, maybe another Kacey Musgraves or maybe Springsteen, I voted high for that Brothers Osbourne track Stay a Little Longer. Considering what a force he was this decade this poll could definitely use more Shane McAnally.

― Will (kruezer2), Thursday, August 18, 2022 4:28 PM (fifty-six minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

Going to be a shame to find "Springsteen" in the 100s :\

Indexed, Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:29 (one year ago) link

and as was stated upthread 'old town road' finished huge in 2019 and now is not even nominated

xheugy eddy (D-40), Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:30 (one year ago) link

ass on the floor placement did seem like a transmission from teh RTC years

xheugy eddy (D-40), Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:30 (one year ago) link

Haha I don't really get what point is being made about "Archie, Marry Me". I don't think the poll is really being dominated by guitar-based indie pop?

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:32 (one year ago) link

look I don’t mind that alvwayys song, it kind of has a personal resonance for my partner and I, but if it’s one of the best things you’ve heard all decade I…really doubt your commitment to sparkle motion.

thought everyone here hated old town road

brimstead, Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:32 (one year ago) link

Oh looking at that 2011 poll results we definitely had some exciting results in there. Some really good songs in there that were sorely missing here.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:35 (one year ago) link

Forgot that I nominated that ICP song but didn’t vote for it lol

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:36 (one year ago) link

even 12 years ago the eoy polls never really captured the vibe of what people who were posting seemed excited about on eg the rolling threads--with the exception the GOAT poll 2010 GOON POLL results: The Top 30 Hip-Hop/Rap Albums of 2010 of course--prob inevitably due to the nature of polls being mathematically biased towards the lcd/middlebrow median voter and many posters with good taste shunning the poll. i liked the concept of al shipley's freeform 90s poll ALL-NEW FREEFORM (SORTA) 1990s ALBUMS POLL: THE BANNS -- ALL OVER BAR THE SUPPLICATING :) (i feel like someone--lj?--did one for the 70s too but can't find it) where you can't vote for anything that placed in the official poll and you can assign any number of votes to any song within a budget

flopson, Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:46 (one year ago) link

Don't blame me, I was listening to Maja Ratkje. xps

i would be down for that kind of follow-up poll

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:55 (one year ago) link

I don’t see the results on that 90’s freeform thread? Am I missing aomething?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 18 August 2022 22:57 (one year ago) link

yes, they're here! FREEFORM 1990's ALTERNATIVE ALBUM POLL - THE RECKONING (TOP TEN COUNTING DOWN NOW)

it was a cute idea, also maybe a silly one, glad somebody remembers it fondly lol

imago, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:02 (one year ago) link

Lol those are some insane results

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:06 (one year ago) link

kind of amazed that there are people here who had never listened to LTTP before! looking at the 2010 results thread, "ass on the floor" only came in at 77 then because the album came out very late in the year so there wasn't that much time for people to really rally around it before the poll, expect it probably would have done better with more time.

for all the complaints about the lack of afropop, it didn't really start showing up high in the EOY polls (which is the best predictor of something placing here) until the last few years of the decade & without real consensus among the dedicated afropop fans it's difficult to get something to place. similar deal with kpop (which has never placed top 10 except for "gangnam style" but is still a notable absence at least so far - no comment if it's going to be in the top 20) - just not quite enough consensus on anything among the few dedicated kpop fans for it to make what we've seen of the countdown.

definitely agree that the lack of rap etc. is a shame which is largely a reflection of how the board's userbase has changed in the last 5 years especially (& the remaining rap thread denizens mostly don't vote in these anymore)

after the top 20 tomorrow i'll very briefly countdown 177? 200? to 102, 5 or 10 tracks at a time, because that is really where all the variety people expect from these polls is.

would love to see more top 20 guesses though because there's one fantastic track no one has even mentioned as a possibility that will surely catch everyone off-guard

ufo, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:08 (one year ago) link

there was also a 70s poll where everything that placed in the previous 70s poll was banned with very fun results

ufo, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:08 (one year ago) link

well there is one outrageous afropop banger I voted for that I am still hopeful about...

here's the recap

ufo, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:14 (one year ago) link

"adorn" - too low! shocked this didn't end up top 20 but then i did vote for "coffee"
"money trees" - surprised this is now the consensus pick from gkmc?
"sugar for the pill" - i love this album but what is this doing here, it's one of the weakest tracks. at least when it placed in the 2017 poll half the votes were for the avalon emerson remix
"royals" - i still hate this!

ufo, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:19 (one year ago) link

In terms of things I associate strongly w/ILM that haven't made a showing yet. How do people feel about this stuff in 2022? Duke Dumont and A*M*E - Need U (100%) - Rolling UK dance pop interzone thread🕸. It's been a while for me, but I think I'd still enjoy my personal faves

“Thin Lines” by Kidnap (Kid) ft. Lotti just missed my ballot. I’ve been playing it quite a lot again recently, because several amapiano tracks that came out in the past few months (including two or three on Kabza’s KoA II album) employ very similar-sounding watery keys.

TURN THIS MUTHA OUT! It's the Alternate 1970s Albums Poll on ILX — Results Thread

this is the alternate 70s poll results

ufo, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:24 (one year ago) link

haha you see right through me breastcrawl

i won't give up...there's another London track we all rather need, from a bobbins-y yet curiously folkish direction

there's been a lot of grousing from people whose specialist subjects haven't been much represented so far, but there are a lot of subjects in that boat. we almost didn't have any metal lol. but yeah the lack of any PC Music, afropop, much rap and so on can be filed alongside the lack of (much) bobbins, rock, psych-pop, emo, footwork, etc etc. then again this is very clearly a pop poll and pop hegemony will always hold sway

but who knows eh. who knows

imago, Thursday, 18 August 2022 23:25 (one year ago) link

lack of any PC Music

not exactly the same but surely 100 gecs are the rep for that here

Also High Lights wow. Amazing.

just want to praise Girl Unit’s Wut, which is not going to show up. It was the ILM #1 of 2010, no? but it’s been disparaged here since then. It still sounds very dramatic and utterly fantastic to me, such downcast euphoria replete with piled-up cartoon vocals and airhorn
