Hatchie song is great but this poll is remarkably one-note.

"Style" is the 3rd Max Martin cowrite, I believe. Thinking he'll get at least a few more from Taylor + Britney + Ariana.

Indexed, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:12 (one year ago) link

I figure there's an AI that could provide ilxors with an endless stream of disco-ish/synthy songs by artists with names like Muxlie and Kleevan.

President Keyes, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:14 (one year ago) link

was gonna say, nothing specifically against Hatchie but this song absolutely epitomises this poll so far and its absolute commitment to glossy female-fronted soft-yearning (ideally that sounds like something from 20+ years ago - this is the Underworld-via-80s one isn't it)

this poll is remarkably one-note.

a nice enough note, but yes, in a world filled with a large variety of notes it’s just the one.

Am not much of a Swift fan but Style is a great song, was cut from my ballot on the last go around though.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:20 (one year ago) link

i didn't know "cool for the summer" was max martin co-written

ufo, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:21 (one year ago) link

Thinking he'll get at least a few more from Taylor + Britney + Ariana.

Unless there's a ton of support for "Shake It Off" or "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", I think we're done for Max Martin cowrites of Taylor Swift songs. I think the fact that "Style" has placed as low as it has makes me think we only have a small handful of Taylor Swift tracks left that could possibly place.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:21 (one year ago) link

“Cool For The Summer” is a great record tho. I didn’t vote for it, but I’m happy it’s here - one of the first entries to actually make me feel that way. if not grit then give me oomph.

as a wise woman once said:

I want to go where the people dance
I want some *action*, I want to live
*Action*, I got so much to give
I want to give it, I want to get some too

Xp: it’s pretty much the same template as a Katy Perry song.

Can't clearly articulate why but I think there's a good argument that both of these songs are better representations of the 2010s and Taylor Swift's talents/output than either "Blank Space" or "Style," which similar to "Cool for the Summer" feel more like the Martin formula grafted onto an artist.

Also, no chance that any of the Reputation tracks place? Haven't looked back at that year's poll but thought "Delicate" and "Gorgeous" had a chance.

Indexed, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:34 (one year ago) link

The Dawson-related track I voted for was Hen Ogledd's "Problem Child," which to me was like something as good as an early Peter Gabriel solo track dropping out of nowhere, but I'm not sure if anyone else feels that way.

Chris L, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:34 (one year ago) link

Good tune

nxd, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:36 (one year ago) link

Yesss, thank you Dawson voters! Amazing track.

emil.y, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:37 (one year ago) link

hey here's one I voted for (though Cool For The Summer was on my long list as well), i like a lot of the songs from peasant but i think voted for the album instead but this song stands on its on. I don't quite understand why I like Richard Dawson but can't ever get into Bjork since they seem like they came at similar stuff from different angles.

Will (kruezer2), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:37 (one year ago) link

Problem Child is amazing and definitely on my longlist. TVS, Nothing Important and [another song] were basically all jostling for one spot very, very high up my ballot. Which did I choose? Ooooh etc.

TVS is great for so many reasons, but I urge people to hear the full 16-minute version that keeps the intro intact; it's a pretty glorious piece of world-building of its own right. And then the rest is bildungsroman into the swirling drunken abyss of eternity

The only Reputation track that was nominated was "Getaway Car", which could still place.

i can't listen to richard dawson for too long (and i can't think of him without thinking of the god delusion guy), but he's certainly memorable.

When I saw Cool for the Summer on the noms list, that's when I realized that I had forgotten to nominate Confident. I much prefer that Demi Lovato song.

peace, man, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:41 (one year ago) link

God, glad it's that low, at least

Bait Kush (Eric H.), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:41 (one year ago) link

fun fact, you too can write lyrics to the vile stuff with this handy formula: 1 extremely british-sounding name + 1 bodily function + 1 act of violence + 1 obscure location in the british commonwealth

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:42 (one year ago) link

+ 1 apostle!

ban, buddy (imago), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 14:42 (one year ago) link

I'm always against instating a max-placements-per-artist rule for the yearly polls but am wondering if it might have made this decade one more interesting. Just feel like a thousand more songs by Taylor/Haim/Destroyer/1975 will ruin me.
