"archie, marry me" - this was ridiculously high up at one point, very glad the rest of you showed some sense. not really sure why anyone's particularly attached to this, it's fairly generic

"midnight city" - it's clearly onto something but it's underwritten as hell, the press hype around this was soo goofy.

"wildest moments" - fine but there are so many way cooler jessie ware singles from this decade ("imagine it was us", "110%", "overtime", "champagne kisses", "adore you", "mirage (don't stop)")

"superlove" - one of the best early charli tracks but she's done so much better since

"super bass" - voted for this, i was surprised by how great it still sounds - those bubbling synths! the verses! i agree she should have used the title for something with an actual focus on bass though.

"pyramids" - i feel like this got people's attention more for the proggy ambition than the song itself because none of its sections are that compelling

our promised stretch of 20 r&b/rap/african pop&house/dancehall/soca tracks starts here!
sorry for getting your hopes up but i didn't promise that.

How much Taytay lurks in 102-140
absolutely none but it's up to you to figure out what that means about how much more taylor is to come

ufo, Tuesday, 16 August 2022 22:07 (one year ago) link

Not sure if I voted for the alvvays song, if I did it was probably in the unranked section of my ballot.

It’s a cute power pop song with a chorus that’s fun to sing to. Twee stopped being the flavor of the month a while ago but I’d certainly save this one.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 22:16 (one year ago) link

agreed that "midnight city" was overhyped. too many people acted like they'd never heard a sax solo before. i still dig it, didn't vote for it. i am almost never in the mood to listen to m83 anymore, but sometimes "intro" still gets me

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 22:19 (one year ago) link

they're both good, but Intro would have been my choice

gee, of course I know that. I was just hyperbolin’ on your it gets better post and an earlier “next 20 could look totally different who knows, such is the way of doing these rollouts over multiple days” ilmsplaining post.

I would in fact argue that all in all it’s actually gotten worse. lot of weight on the shoulders of the top 60, but no, I’m definitely not getting any hopes up at this point

edit: I would argue that all in all it’s actually gotten worse tho.

yeah idk, i expect a lot more afropop in the eventual 2020s poll

I did a massive listening project for 2011 and ended up ranking Midnight City at ~#150. Also put a track by an unsigned artist at ~#80 and he got in touch to tell me he was flattered but the M83 was his track of the year, I did not agree.

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 22:45 (one year ago) link

Good stuff. Strawberry Skies would have been a little higher if I wasn't so unobservant when checking the tracks list.

kraudive, Tuesday, 16 August 2022 22:58 (one year ago) link

It’s a cute power pop song with a chorus that’s fun to sing to.

it doesn't really compare to like, charly bliss or the beths as far as power pop goes

ufo, Tuesday, 16 August 2022 23:08 (one year ago) link

Midnight City is one of those “you had to be there” sort of songs. I wouldn’t rate it anywhere near a top 100 songs of the decade nowadays.

Back then it was a perfect soundtrack for driving around and partying with friends, it tricked me and several people into thinking it was a “soundtrack for eternity” kind of song. It’s actually more of a party trick kind of song. I’d argue several french house songs follow this pattern of sounding mindblowing at the year of release and almost instantly suffering of diminishing comebacks.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 23:15 (one year ago) link

^agree with that

Daniel Lopatin (as Oneohtrix Point Never) and Laurel Halo are two of my favorite artists of the decade (I included both in the top 5 on my albums ballot), but as interesting as Strawberry Skies is, it doesn’t really do it for me

Dan S, Tuesday, 16 August 2022 23:24 (one year ago) link

"Midnight City" was an ideal my-mind-has-hit-the-third-cocktail song a decade ago.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 23:32 (one year ago) link

Yeah in the right context that song could really hype you up a decade ago.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 23:36 (one year ago) link

It’s more of a moment than an actual song

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 16 August 2022 23:42 (one year ago) link

didn’t vote for anything that showed up today, but Stonemilker is awesome and deserves to be here, and that image Moka is great

Dan S, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 00:10 (one year ago) link

Bjork and cool imagery are synonyms!

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 00:15 (one year ago) link

interesting that there is a narrow point range between the lowest and the highest so far

"XMAS_EVET10 [120][thanaton3 mix]", "The Mother We Share" and "Bad and Boujee" are three tracks I really like and listened to a lot.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 01:19 (one year ago) link

well you didn't vote, that's how it goes

ufo, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 01:41 (one year ago) link

This “Marry Me, Archie” song is power pop(?) It sounds like it’s stuck in 2nd gear (to quote esteemed power-pop duo The Rembrandts)

Really hoping The Beths can sneak into either (or both) lists. Archie, is the song that kinda got me into these kinds of bands again. There's just something about her voice in the chorus and the guitar sound, particularly in the second verse.

I loved the results today. Very pleasantly surprised to see that Classixx track in here. I saw them supporting Cut Copy years ago and that song got an insane reaction. It felt like the entire crowd was bouncing to the chorus.

I didn't vote for that Björk song, I went for the album instead. Probably should have put it on my list as it's my favourite song she's done since Vespertine.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 02:51 (one year ago) link

I'd sooner describe "Marry Me Archie" as twee than power pop.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 03:17 (one year ago) link

it’s a cute song, solid enough use of the “here comes your man” chord progression. not sure why people are gaga for it

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 03:33 (one year ago) link

It has the same effect in me as “Lloyd I’m ready to be heartbroken” so yeah it’s closer to twee than power pop to my ears. Just a cute song that it’s fun to sing along to. Maybe not top 100 songs of the 2010s but about 90% of the songs so far wouldn’t make the cut for me.

It’s almost as is a “best of” list is a subjective exercise. But hey, most of us did vote for things in here, people who didn’t vote shouldn’t bring this party down!

This makes me like it more.

My "not sure I noticed it in the playlists let alone in the 2010s but it's quite good innit" track for today is Amel Larrieux's. Cool.

I suspect the only thing I actually voted for was "Stonemilker" which easily passed the "can it sometimes move you to the verge of tears?" test alongside most of the rest of my top 10 lol.

violently disagree lol

I like just about half the things here so far - this ratio should hold all the way to the end.

nashwan, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:35 (one year ago) link

this AFX track is nicely diverting

ban, buddy (imago), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:36 (one year ago) link

makes a nice contrast with that nonexistent M83 smear of vibes-not-music

ban, buddy (imago), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:38 (one year ago) link

be interesting to see when we hit double figures votes for a track (even more interesting if we never do ha)

nashwan, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:39 (one year ago) link

four of my votes have made it now - Nicki, Wolf Alice, Amel Larrieux and Migos :)

rest of the results are so-so for me though - some were on my longlist but I didn't vote for them, some I actively dislike ("Uptown Funk", "Teenage Dream"). Not really feeling the tracks I wasn't familiar with before (other than yes, Aphex - I really should catch up with his 2010s releases)

already bracing for too much Taylor Swift and 1975 :/

Roz, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:43 (one year ago) link

Think I preferred yesterday's results to Monday's, three from my ballot (Bad & Boujee was my #3) and a few from albums I voted for. Have realised I have no idea what the consensus fave Taylor Swift songs are.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:46 (one year ago) link

this Bjork song seems to lack the punch, edge, point-of-difference of her best material, she may be the highest fashion but this feels like she just knocked up a poncho cos it was raining, curious what its proponents think elevates it

ban, buddy (imago), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:47 (one year ago) link

already bracing for too much Taylor Swift and 1975

no placement for the latter yet is a bit odd given the presence of other vote-split-defying ILM pets

nashwan, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 09:55 (one year ago) link

"archie, marry me"

The chorus to this song sounds like the person emerged from 12 years of homeschooling having never heard singing or music before and was given the song to sing and they recorded the first take.

doomposting is the new composting (PBKR), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 12:14 (one year ago) link

Something shut off for me with Bjork with "Medulla" and I've never been able to get into anything by her from that point on, with the exception of "Stonemilker."

Chris L, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 12:22 (one year ago) link

I like the Alvvays song, good memories, it would make my top 200. Anyway, one thing I voted for has placed (the Talabot remix of "You Belong in my Arms"). It's an unusual poll thread experience for me because I've heard almost everything before from previous EOY rollouts, a bit of the surprise element is missing. Hoping for more surprises in the top 60!

TWELVE Michelob stars?!? (seandalai), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 12:23 (one year ago) link

also interesting to contrast the results (so far) with my experience of being on ILM all through the decade - is it really ILM's last word on the 2010s if Hot Fruit doesn't place?

still confidently hoping for Nadia Oh at #1

Seeing stuff like Katy Perry and other pop hits from this decade here (and the 1975 to come) exemplifies my problem with pop music in this era: it's like the 1980s if there were no Princes or Kate Bushes on the charts so people ended up aggressively stanning Paul Young or Laura Branigan.

Chris L, Wednesday, 17 August 2022 12:28 (one year ago) link

My prediction for the next 20 is like 3 votesplit Kendrick tracks to drop, probably not including the one I voted for

ban, buddy (imago), Wednesday, 17 August 2022 12:41 (one year ago) link

some people are stanning Laura Branigan even today, and not without good reason.

I mean, you must be familiar with “Self Control”, a very high ranking top 100 Track of the 1980s.
