Millar (Millar), Monday, 16 June 2003 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, someone should recommend some 'mellow' bands that Allison might like. (not to replace DMB, just to add to it)

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 16 June 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Diamond girl's better.. =P~

Allison, Monday, 16 June 2003 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Who on earth is Dave Matthews? I've never even heard of him, or his music. Seriously. I assumed that you were all simply having some sot of philosophical discussion about dull band names over here on this thread. And now I find it's all about *music*. Whoa. Respect to you crazy cats into attacking and defending your obscure artists. Is he one of those "Beat Of The Traps" dudes? Should I be fitting him into the next "Outsider" issue of Careless Talk - or is he too "outside" for even that?

Is this an American thing?

Jerry (Jerry), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 07:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Incidentally, the second initial answer on this thread works equally well, if not better, if you change

"Hes a 90s sting. he's Smug. Yuppie music. Hes boring."

to

Hes a 90s sting. he's Smog. Yuppie music. Hes boring.

Jerry (Jerry), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 07:03 (twenty-three years ago)

he's conor oberst with a bigger, slightly more improv backing band and a slightly - slightly - lower timbre.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 07:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Really? Maybe I should check him out... If he really does exist, that is - and you crazy ILM cats aren't having some weird form of extended metaphysical joke. Which I really wouldn't put past some of the people here.

Jerry (Jerry), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 07:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked the part where I crashed Allison's brain. That was neat.

And I wasn't saying that I don't like DMB because a lot of people like them, which is the point that you seem to be addressing. I'm saying that one of the reasons I don't like them is that frat boys and hippies like them. I'm willing to accept that this is probably a stupid reason too, and I'm really only being half serious about it, but no one has really said why a band's audience is not a good reason for not liking that band.

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Have fun, Jerry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

(sadly that opening page is really good. it might cause jerry to stalk dmb for a schpecial feature.)

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

what if you like just a fraction of the band's audience, does that mean you can like "4.3 songs" or "the bass lines" or something

dave q, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought this was the Wesley Willis Fiasco. But whatever.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Ask the people who select the music they listen to by the type of audience it appeals to.

Allison, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

(Takes cursory glance at website)

Oh, so the Dave Matthews Band is halfway between Grateful Dead (another band no one in the UK has heard: it's a bit like the way no one knows a single baseball or basketball or American "football" player outside the States) and Moby, right?

Whoa! They sell flipflops! Just in time for summer, too. Now, why didn't Careless Talk think of that? PS: Ned, I need your column specially early this issue. Like next week.

Jerry (Jerry), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

More like halfway between Medeski, Martin and Wood and G. Love and Special Sauce.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Or Bela Fleck and Leo Sayer.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Ack. Okay, Jerry, but please send me a followup reminder via e-mail or I'll never get it done!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, and "the guy sings like a Muppet" is hardly a criticism.

So does Neil Young - Kermit

Jerry (Jerry), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Ask the people who select the music they listen to by the type of audience it appeals to.

You're really hung up on that, aren't you.

Dave Matthews Band is halfway between...

I'd say they're in some hellish middle-ground between Manheim Steamroller, Jimmy Buffett and Kansas.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, and "the guy sings like a Muppet" is hardly a criticism.

So does Neil Young - Kermit

I don't remember ever saying I liked Neil Young.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, you guys started it.

allison, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I believe "John McAteer" started it.

J (Jay), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes Sir...

allison, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking Sides: Momus Vs Dave Matthews Band

Rambo, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i hate the dave matthews band because their bassist's dad is a really unreliable guitar tech. he had my guitar for 4 months and didn't fix it.

brains (cerybut), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Well now...there's yet another well-founded rationale. I applaud you for being so profound and equitable in your reasoning.

Stay tuned folks...Allison's brain is once again on the brink of destruction.

Allison, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

::yawn:::

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 02:26 (twenty-three years ago)

and in the sequel he sings "I've seen a million coochies/ and I've rocked them all."

This shouldnt've been ignored.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well now...there's yet another well-founded rationale. I applaud you for being so profound and equitable in your reasoning.
Allison...is there a single answer in the universe that you *would* accept as perfectly legitimate?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 19 June 2003 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Allison should become an ILX regular.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 19 June 2003 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"Gooba Gabba, Gooba Gabba, We Accept You, We Accept You!
Gooba Gabba, Gooba Gabba, One of Us, One of Us!"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 19 June 2003 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahh...see, that's what you get when you don't pay attention. If you look back, you'll notice that the question in question has already been questioned =P

Allison, Thursday, 19 June 2003 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

You all need to get LIVES. John Mayer sucks 100% and Dave Matthews Band is a group who are a lot more talented then other bands out there. I just wanted to tell you haters out there to get a life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are all fake and all of you out there all. We are all from something else. You all who hate DMB don't even know what you are talking about. Your proboly a bunch of non comformists who conform yes I mean you goth people and whatever else you all are. GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!

Margaret Smith, Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, to be 11 again...

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm...I believe that comment cancelled out everything I said about the majority of their fans not being half retarded. Er...thanks.

Allison, Saturday, 28 June 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Allison, you officially rock.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 28 June 2003 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, they just kinda suck, don't they ? Jocks should really be content to strum Doors' shit in their dorm rooms, go through flitting Jim Morrison infatuations the first couple of weeks after they first get bent, and be good paying customers at Ben Harper gigs.

TripVanJangle (TripVanJangle), Saturday, 28 June 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

here we are again at square 1!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Saturday, 28 June 2003 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

*sigh* that we are...

Allison, Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not even a very interesting square!

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

More a trapezoid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Trapezoids are way cooler than squares.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

What if it was a self-consciously dorky trapezoid?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

a rhombus then

maura (maura), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Parallelograms roxx u r all obtuse angles.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

the word 'rhombus' also has that world music feel so it fits perfectly

which brings me to the question of course that is always at the forefront of my dmb thought process (when i'm not thinking about the ways 'crash' encapsulates everything that is wrong with white middle class universities in the states) -- is dave matthews the fault of 'in your eyes'?

maura (maura), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)
