I always brace myself for the worst every time this thread gets bumped. It doesn't sound like there have been any recent developments, but now I'm wondering how bad it can get?
― birdistheword, Thursday, 7 July 2022 14:49 (three years ago)
Maybe a Trumpian turn of announcing his candidacy? A call to his devoted fans to join a new far right party?
― birdistheword, Thursday, 7 July 2022 14:52 (three years ago)
Calling mourners after the Manchester bombing "morons" for singing an Oasis tune?
― Piedie Gimbel, Thursday, 7 July 2022 14:55 (three years ago)
Ughhhhh....
― birdistheword, Thursday, 7 July 2022 15:01 (three years ago)
No matter what you think of the polarizing lyrics in “Bonfire of Teenagers,” there’s one thing we can all agree on: Morrissey will always say what’s on his mind, for better or for worse.
― Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 July 2022 15:02 (three years ago)
I guess what will naturally happen (or perhaps already has) is that I just maintain the same appreciation for '80s and '90s Morrissey while doing my best to ignore latter day Morrissey. It actually brings to mind Dennis Miller, a guy who I surprisingly like a lot when I caught reruns of '80s and early '90s episodes of Saturday Night Live. In both cases though, people argue that the signs were always there, and yet it's still hard to reconcile the work they did then versus what they continuously spout now.

take it you haven't read this (from 1986) interview up the thead then?https://mrmorrissey.tripod.com/interv/inter5.html

Legitimately hope he’s dead every time a thread about him gets bumped and I’m disappointed every time.
― Osama bin Chinese (gyac), Thursday, 7 July 2022 15:34 (three years ago)
Maybe I'll just think of the Smiths as Johnny Marr's band.
― birdistheword, Thursday, 7 July 2022 15:51 (three years ago)
The only smiths that ever mattered is the uk snack brand known for producing scampi fries sito
― Wiggum Dorma (wins), Thursday, 7 July 2022 16:00 (three years ago)
i prefer their earlier releases - ie Salt & Shake crisps.
sorry for bumping. just incredulous anyone still likes him.
― stirmonster, Thursday, 7 July 2022 16:13 (three years ago)
So, he's written an answer song to "Don't look back in Anger"
It's called "Songs that saved someone elses life" oh wait..
― Mark G, Thursday, 7 July 2022 16:16 (three years ago)
Love a salt n shake! Hell I love a frazzles don’t @ me. Both kinds of chipsticks good too!
― Wiggum Dorma (wins), Thursday, 7 July 2022 16:16 (three years ago)
salt n shake went downhill when they signed to Walkers.
― stirmonster, Thursday, 7 July 2022 16:25 (three years ago)
In light of the above posts, it also saddens me that the only creative name Americans have ever come up with for chips and fries during the past 20 years is "freedom fries."
― birdistheword, Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:03 (three years ago)
look, when new jersey came up with the name "disco fries" for poutine, america officially peaked
― Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:20 (three years ago)

True enough. Trump supporters often praise their hero for speaking his mind. To which my reply is, Speaking your mind is not a virtue when your mind is a dumpster fire.

So dumb seeing this presented as a Moz-vs.-Oasis beef.
― deep luminous trombone (Eazy), Thursday, 7 July 2022 19:06 (three years ago)
This guy was ordering his band to write letters to his record company, trying to get them to release "Throwing My Arms Around Paris" in the wake of the Paris terror attacks in 2015 because it might give him a number one. So doesn't seem unlikely that he's motivated by envy and frustration that the mourners weren't singing one of his songs.
― Piedie Gimbel, Thursday, 7 July 2022 20:15 (three years ago)
Morrisey is a oacist
― m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:11 (three years ago)
The frustration in the song is about having the British anthem after a terrorist attack be "don't be angry."
― deep luminous trombone (Eazy), Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:20 (three years ago)
The British anthem? What they fuck are you talking about? In any case, who gives a fuck what Morrissey has to say about Britain or about how he thinks people should react to terrorism?
― Eavis Has Left the Building (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:31 (three years ago)
I wish a writer of some reputation would publish something that might cross his desk about how bad it sucks, and in some very particular ways, that a guy whose insights into loneliness and otherness continually betrays the import of those insights -- and was doing so all along, mind ("reggae is vile" "hang the DJ" et al), but -- it's on the level of Edith Wharton's antisemitism for me, something that spoils what might have been a balm
― J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:32 (three years ago)
xpost I'm not siding with him at all, but turning the new song into Moz-vs-Oasis would be like taking a mocking of "We Shall Overcome" as being against Pete Seeger.
― deep luminous trombone (Eazy), Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:37 (three years ago)
xp aw shit, The Age of Innocence is one of my favorite books, and now's that been tainted too.
― birdistheword, Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:39 (three years ago)
(xp) Yeah, like, Morrissey isn't also jealous as hell of the fact that his fellow Mancunians are singing Oasis songs while his songs don't even get a look in.

― Alba, Thursday, 7 July 2022 22:00 (three years ago)
Johnny Marr was willing to show Morrissey how to play guitar and to dance with him in the official How Soon Is Now music video. I hope he stayed out of politics. I think he made the Smiths good.
― youn, Thursday, 7 July 2022 22:07 (three years ago)
When I saw Marr at Warsaw in Brooklyn (I think 2016?) at one point between songs, he went up to the mic and said something like "all right we have another one for you, but first....POLITICS!" and then jokingly cut himself off.

Yeah, like, Morrissey isn't also jealous as hell of the fact that his fellow Mancunians are singing Oasis songs while his songs don't even get a look in.
This reminds me of when he went on radio to say that Brexit was a beautiful thing but the metropolitan elites won't accept it; gotta think Smiths/Moz fans are overwhelmingly remain, for all his "I'm an outsider who speaks his mind" shtick so much of this is pathetically wanting to be accepted by an audience that I don't think has much time for him.
― Daniel_Rf, Friday, 8 July 2022 10:00 (three years ago)
Manchester voted 60.4% to Remain by the way, but I doubt Manchester has any interest in Morrissey anyway.

There was a time in my life when the Smiths' music meant as much to me as anyone's.
Moz has lived too long. Or maybe I have.
