OK. Granted, "too many people like them" is not a good reason for hating something. But "frat boys and hippies like them" and "that line about girls hiking up their skirts" seem like valid reasons.
The former: if someone you respect likes music that you're not fond of, you might be willing to give it another chance based on that respect. It works the other way too: if someone whose tastes differ from yours completely on almost every subject (ie, hippies and frat boys) like a certain band, it might not be good reason alone not to like that band, but with other factors, it can certainly add to the hatred. Especially because if you go to a DMB show, these are the people you will almost certainly be forced to socialize with.
The latter: I'm sorry, but even if this is "only one line" and "a joke," it's a pretty fucking sexist thing to say and reflective of an attitude that's deserving of hatred. A joke can be sexist, and even if it is only one line, it's one that he chose to make public in a forum open to millions of people, which is not the wisest thing to do if you're a "completely respectable" person.

I hate him partly for the same reason I hated pink floyd the first 16 years of my life: overexposure. I once spent a summer taking courses at a college in Bham (mind you, this was 2000) and my discman held the only 2 speakers that weren't playing his music 24/7. Also, his lyrics are shit, all of his music that isn't pathetically overproduced like "the space between" sounds the goddamn same. plus he tries to pretend like he's this laid back happy go lucky guy when he's really a coke addict.
all that aside, Don Lennon's pair of songs about him make it all worthwhile.

Sorry if I skip over some points on your posts, it's about 20 of you guys vs. one of me, and I'm too lazy to go back and read everthing. Basically...you're saying if everyone started liking a band you like, you should stop listening to them. If you look up at the bands I like, you'll probably see that it's not the normal roster of DMB fans, and may even have some bands you like. I'm definetly not your definition of the conventional fan, given that I listen to and play MANY diverse styles of music (DMB being far from my favorite). You're probably thinking "then why the fuck does she like DMB, who is seemingly borning and uninspiring"? I was sceptical of their music at first, also thought only the potheads listened to them and anything they like wouldn't be applealing to me.
Anyway..if you can go along with me for a second I promise there's a point to this...kinda. If any of you have had a time where even if your life is ostensibly normal, but you still feel constantly futile, you can relate. Music somtimes is the only thing that alleviates that feeling. The bands that I listened to at the time were pretty hard-line and aggressive, so I needed something mellow. What band is mellow most of the time? That's right..DMB, very good! I realized that they weren't as boring as I initially thought and they actually had a lot of talent and substance in their playing. If you can't get over the fact that one comment, which I, as a woman, don't find nearly as offensive or sexist as the majority of music produced by most artists, mainstream or otherwise, then you probably have a verrryyy modest music lineup.
People keep bringing up "the space between" which is, in my opinion, one of the shittiest songs they've written. Unless you're a tactless, imperceptive bastard, you'd at least acknowledge that Dave's lyrics are heartfelt and sincere.
By the way, his lifestyle has much changed since their early days. The comment about being a coke addict may have been accurate 10 years ago, but now it is a bit outdated.

Who on earth is Dave Matthews? I've never even heard of him, or his music. Seriously. I assumed that you were all simply having some sot of philosophical discussion about dull band names over here on this thread. And now I find it's all about *music*. Whoa. And I wasn't saying that I don't like DMB because a lot of people like them, which is the point that you seem to be addressing. I'm saying that one of the reasons I don't like them is that frat boys and hippies like them. I'm willing to accept that this is probably a stupid reason too, and I'm really only being half serious about it, but no one has really said why a band's audience is not a good reason for not liking that band.
