Here you go Bob:
http://www.yousendit.com/howdoesitwork.aspx

Youjust need to know where the song file is stored on your machine, and browse to the file through YSI.

You can then take the link that's given after a successful upload and paste it in the message here.

This is a test upload & not JP related. This band only ever sold 60 copies of their single in the UK. Yet one of those copies made it to a radio station in New York & received regular airplay so that are known by a few fans in the USA. Hope you enjoy it.

OK I am happy now. The second link seems to have worked. Forgive my uploading Boys From The East. I thought they were a fabulous little group from Bradford UK who had zero success in the uk in the early 1980's. By a miracle they seem to have been noticed in new York USA, which I only picked up from the ebay link below. (The band had no idea about this until I spoke to a member last week) By way of reparation, I will upload the Mighty Avengers & G L Crockett B Sides at the weekend. Roshell Anderson is on the way.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 16 December 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

great work bob,
not wishing to sound picky, but is there any way of saving the files as mp3 rather than wma?

keefus (keefus), Friday, 16 December 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

OK, attempt 2.

I'm not seeing any peers on the torrent--anyone else having luck?

patita (patita), Saturday, 17 December 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Hey Bob - can I help you get some MP3s out?
What software are you using to record from vinyl?

Yoz, Sunday, 18 December 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Hi Yoz,

It is quite a long route. I record the vinyl into a TASCAM digital recorder. I then very slightly mix it to try get it as clear as possble. I can't get rid of background crackle though if it is there on the record. I then burn a CD & upload the CD onto my PC via Windows Media Player. I can then upload to yousendit. My son has an MP3 player & he might be able to assist. I suppose he can record the CD I have burned into MP3 & if I can the upload the MP3 onto my PC, the problem should be solved.

Regards

Bob

PS

I am sulking this morning because I got outbid on Sasha Caro despite having bid £51 (It is worth £25). If only the purchaser knew how many people he has deprived of a bit of Xmas happiness!! Oh Well, if at first you don't succeed & all that!!

Bob Robinson (rob1nson), Sunday, 18 December 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

I just found this page for the first time and the different links to different songs is a bit overwhelming!

Is there much chance of the whole collection being put together into one torrent or something?

thanks

Mark Fairlie, Sunday, 18 December 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Hey Bob - Those sound great, thanks for getting them up!!

Mark - there is a torrent (not sure it's working right now), scroll up or use 'find on page.' Also, a lot of people have them all at Slsk. But yeah, you have options in terms of getting them all at once.

TRG (TRG), Sunday, 18 December 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Bob -

The entire thing, except for the last ten or so, is available as two torrents here:
http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/peelbox

The remaining tracks will be torrented soon - I was waiting for more to trickle in...

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Sunday, 18 December 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

(and if the torrent doesn't work, email me - If my PC is off, there may not be other seeders right now...) right.knewitATgmail.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Sunday, 18 December 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Bob,
I highly recommend taking a look at this page:
http://www.br0wn.co.uk/vinyltocd.htm

It talks about plugging the turntable directly into the PC, but you can do that with the TASCAM, or even rip WAV files off the CDs and pull those into Audacity. (I would use DBPowerAmp - www.dbpoweramp.com - to do the ripping, it's fast and easy. Just make sure you rip to WAV format at 44.1khz in full stereo.)

That page also has some recommendations of software for the removal of vinyl noise.

Once you've got the WAV in a decent state, Audacity can export MP3 - just make sure you download the lame_enc.dll file and tell Audacity it's there. Then save the MP3s as 192 Kbit/s or higher.

This tutorial is pretty good for getting started with Audacity:

yes, excellent work Bob!

would it be impolitic to contact the winner of the Sasha Caro? I haven't been able to come to a decision on it myself.

patita (patita), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

i would say: go for it!
i'm sure whoever they are, they would be interested in this project and could be persuaded(!!)

k

keefus (keefus), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

damn, apparently you can only send a message if you're the seller, or if that person has any active auctions (he doesn't). ah well.

anyone else have ideas?

patita (patita), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

I thought that's how they worked things, damn! I used to contact winners when I was really poor and before they changed things. But no, Patita, I've no ideas.

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 22 December 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I guess I remembered the old rules. ah well, maybe another copy will surface. Bob is on the hunt, and who knows what will turn up.

patita (patita), Thursday, 22 December 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

long-winded, but…
could you contact the seller and ask him to
a) pass on a message, or
b) give you the winner's email

or
c) wait for another to turn up…

k

keefus (keefus), Thursday, 22 December 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

DomesticEmpire (johnpeeleveryday.blogspot.com), Monday, 26 December 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

Sorry to be dim, but I can't seem to get any of the MP3s from the torrent to play. Is it something to do with firewalls?

Jon Dennis, Monday, 26 December 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

not enough info to tell.

can you normally download torrents?
what torrent client are you using?
importantly, have the files downloaded fully?

lately, Monday, 26 December 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

I've never done it before. I downloaded Bit Torrent from the BT homepage (http://www.bittorrent.com/)
Aha. I think it's possible the files haven't downloaded fully. How long does it take?

Jon Dennis, Monday, 26 December 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

In fact, two hours later and they haven't downloaded at all. Zero percent.

Jon Dennis, Monday, 26 December 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

maybe no one is 'seeding' the torrent. i tried to grab the torrent last month and no one was sharing (seeding) it.

download speed depends on how many ppl are seeding & how fast their and your internet connection is.

in the bittorrent client it should tell you what % of the file has downloaded (if any).

possible solution - try and use the azureus torrent client (google: azureus) - i think the torrent was set up in such a way that only this client works.

but again, if no one is seeding the client, then you wont be able to get anything

boo, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Before the holiday I'd attempted to get the festive fifty torrent with no luck... but I wasn't using Azureus. I'll try again with it (though it confounds me with its l33tness).

patita (patita), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

i use azureus and tried to get the 6 gig 'festive 50' torrent. no one was seeding it, so i deleted it.

:(

here's wishing that the remaining tracks come to us early in the new year! cheers everyone!

Hi all,

first time this awesome page came to my attention and I must say it's a real treat: thanks so much for all the effort and work involved - this is really neatly done!!

Are you still interested in K. Coyne's/Siren's 'I Wonder Where'? If this is the case, please provide me with an e-mail adress where I can send it to (will be an mp3 - file).

Q.: is there any updated list of songs available for free download, but one where the link is NOT expired?

Cheers,

Dirk, Germany.

Dirk Huppertz, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Hi Dirk, We have Siren's "I Wonder Where." There might be people missing it though so you can go to yousendit.com, upload the song, and then post the link here. As for your second question, I'm not sure anybody is seeding a torrent right now. Second place to check is slsk, a number of people have the complete set there.

TRG (TRG), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 13:40 (twenty years ago)

To catch us up after the holidays, here's a recap on the status so far. According to what I have in the spreadsheet, we're still without any leads on these:
Arthur K Adams: Wildwood flower/It's a wild, wild, wild, wild wildwood flower
Dreamland Express: Groovy/u.f.o
Firemen: Old smokie/Louie's theme
Sipho Bhengu: Tickey dopies/I saluti
Spit Out: O from I/Tan/Rot'n'roll

Various folks have indicated that they have these (but they haven't been uploaded yet):
Easy Teeth: Car Noise
Ken Colyers Jazzmen: all (If I Cease to Love is the correct A side)
Pocket Fishrmen: Yr Story
Sasha Caro: all (lucky catch)
The Legion of Super Heroes: all (or did I imagine this?)

Missing B sides (don't know if anyone has them):
Clefs of Lavender Hill: First Tell Me Why
Greenhornes: Stayed Up Last Night
Mickey Lee Lane: With Your Love
Ray Martin: Bell of the Ball
Roshell Anderson: Such a Beautiful Thing
Stanley Winston: It's Alright
The Big Three: If You Ever Change Your Mind

Thanks again to everyone who's bought the singles, called in favors, or gone to great lengths to get missing tracks. We're within range of completion I think!

Feel free to amend what I have here if I've got the status of anything wrong.

patita (patita), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 05:30 (twenty years ago)

i lost out on the Big Three thing on ebay over christmas but wasn't too fussed as someone had said they had a copy in the meantime (there are a couple of cds available which contain the track but it appears under a different name, details upthread)
