the contempt is pretty great, especially because it sounds like the voice is saying, "we control content, content" which i love. that and the dub bassline.

Anybody heard the full version of "what wrong my friends" yet? It's pretty amazing.

Yeah, but it doesn't convince me at the moment, too long for its own good (although it somehow starts making sense at the end). But after 'Fizheuer' it sounds a bit Villalobos-on-par.

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

side A/B of What's Wrong haven't clicked at all for me yet. Omar -- it starts making sense at the end cos he cuts out the jazzy stuff, no? all starts off a bit too Herbert-esque or something... (and not the good parts of Herbert!)
i'm sure i'll grow to love it.

Dummolator though - fuck me.

a (rslvd), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

actually Herbert is wrong. it sounds like that NSI 12" on Cadenza, only... drunk.

a (rslvd), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

please spill beans on depeche mode remix release plans here, thanks.

That already sounds drunk.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

the what's wrong 12" sounds better than fizheuer to me. possibly this is just down to crappy mp3s though.

fabric mp3s are on coccoonstyled...

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 1 November 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks, supa, what a great track that Smith N Hack-remix is! It kind of feels like it would mix perfectly into or out of Booka's Yello-remix. Maybe a little too obvious even.

I also like how The Contempt really says "we control content", great stuff. I was also pretty surprised when I found out it's from 1995. It really doesn't sound that old to me.

Er1end (E. Hammer), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

i haven't been able to get all of 'what's wrong' yet, but i have the title track. and i've been listening to it non-stop. more than fizheuer, which i have heard enough times by this point after obsession with his live sets.

Is this new Perlon coming out on disc as well as vinyl?

jeffery (jeffery), Thursday, 2 November 2006 22:47 (nineteen years ago)

i think they only put lps out on cd

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 2 November 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

but don't worry, it's coming out on .rar

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 2 November 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

well, as someone who hasn't really taken to a lot of villalobos in a way that reflects the props he gets, I have to say that fizheuer zieheuer is the best 30+ mins of music I've heard in a while, at least as far as new stuff. I wish this track was an hour

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 3 November 2006 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

Dummolator though - fuck me.

indeed! :o

Still not getting a great deal out of "Fizheuer Zieheuer" outside of a mix context, wondering what people are hearing that I'm not frankly as I don't think it's got that much going for it. I feel like he's spreading himself very thin with both these releases. I wish he'd smushed them all together in some way.

new new wave of new wave new rave (fandango), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

okay the piano on true to myself was sort of charming but dude should not have kept it up

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

africolaps is great, however. the african vocals start off sounding like john fell ryan mumbling and then develop a rhythm and slight, lilting melody. i love it just like the solomon's prayer / father 12"

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:17 (nineteen years ago)

hmm, more improvised keyboard work on gugga sempa CRAP

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:21 (nineteen years ago)

lfam, this is probably going to offend but... all of this reads like someone desperately hoping to be first off the cool bandwagon with dignity preserved... It seems almost as bad (ok, not quite) as the opposite end of the trend where indie-fuxx are all "OMG 2006 IS SO MINIMAL!" (I haven't come across it IRL but yeah trawling some awful boards = realising Ronan was sorta OTM upthread).

I mean, I just want him to take a real stab at bettering Alcachofa, and still do the 12" stuff whenever... I feel like something's getting lost amongst the mixed-up priorities here.

new new wave of new wave new rave (fandango), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:27 (nineteen years ago)

hmm i like fizheuer and the second half of this ep but the other songs are kind of crappy.

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

how's this: i love nearly everything else ricardo villalobos has done but i wish he would have louder kick drums and less piano playing! and i don't listen to achso much anymore. sorry if i sound too cool!

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:32 (nineteen years ago)

that's a LOT clearer! put like that I'd even agree.

new new wave of new wave new rave (fandango), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

and frankly, i think that people who are saying this new ep is totally amazing sound like they aren't listening to the same songs as me! because i think it's pretty uneven.

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

and i definitely think he's still got it, based on his dj sets.

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

i just don't get euphoric and tingly like i did with 808 the bassqueen when i hear things like gugga sempa

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

i'm glad you think i'm not just trying to sound cool

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

some more straight bangingness would possibly shut the minimal backlashers up for a while too...

haven't played this new thing enough to be 100% in any way but I'm probably with you on the unevenness too.

new new wave of new wave new rave (fandango), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

anyhoo, sorry about that the whole "dropped off since '99" thing just set the "O RLY?" off in me. I'm kind of sad I can't get behind this new stuff. It seems like Achso really should have had the CD release!

new new wave of new wave new rave (fandango), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

Achso aside Villalobos's best stuff this year has been remixes anyway.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, the dropped off comment was a little hasty, cause i do love alcachofa and au harem

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 04:52 (nineteen years ago)

and 485u!!!

but, can we talk about quizás? it's his version of quizás, quizás, quizás, on the vinyl alcachofa. perhaps better known to le monde anglophone as perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. the hi-hat only comes in between the kick and the snare (not between the snare and kick) giving it a lot of punch, and it has a smooth, rolling bassline. the icing is in the vocal however, played through whatever vocoder he was in love with for that album, but much brighter than easy lee or what you say, and then reverbed delay trails off into the distance. absolutely sublime, stands well next to wairworinao.

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 05:00 (nineteen years ago)

very bright and colorful!

liberal arts school prick (lfam), Friday, 3 November 2006 05:01 (nineteen years ago)

haha! "Why worry now?"

just got it. don't mind me (blunt), Friday, 3 November 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

I really wish the marching band was much louder in the mix throughout, like the occasional

Horn Solos (blunt), Friday, 3 November 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

There's a proper 13 minute version of the depeche mode remix up at http://ohmygoshparty.blogspot.com/

Really great ending actually. I hadn't noticed that in the mix.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 3 November 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

what, the synths?
also still open to suggestions of nice tribal house that sounds like this...

a (rslvd), Friday, 3 November 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

oh, and thanks for the link. nice to finally hear a 'real' version of this.

a (rslvd), Friday, 3 November 2006 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

oh dear i need to get home to my own computer.

"also still open to suggestions of nice tribal house that sounds like this..."

You may want to specify what it is particularly about the remix that you love in order to ensure on-point recommendations, but as a starting point you should check out Dubtribe Sound System's "Equitorial" if you haven't heard it before - massive tune.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 3 November 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

What happened to the FIZBEAST? I think I'll get this on ye olde vinyl (it's cheaper anyway) myself =) might have gone off "Dummolater" a bit already (it reminds me of another tune I can't place right now...)

new new wave of new wave new rave (fandango), Friday, 3 November 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Saturday, 4 November 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

lfam, that sendspace link doesn't work for me. it just comes up as a non-file.

also, 'Dummolator' is sick. totally totally sick.

trees (treesessplode), Sunday, 5 November 2006 04:13 (nineteen years ago)

i think you need to rename the file to quizas.mp3

i bet using that non-latin character for the 'a' fucked it up

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 5 November 2006 05:28 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i think that was it. is quite nice.

my feelings summed right now: 'what's wrong my friends' takes a bit too long to get started, but ends well. nice syncopations. 'gugga sempa' has a nice mood to it, but keeps it for too long. sort of flat. 'africolaps' is sweet. and i think we can all agree that 'dummolator' is a bowel-shaker.

trees (treesessplode), Sunday, 5 November 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

I really love 'what's wrong my friends' (the track); the rest of the ep is taking some time to grow on me, I think. Weirdly not feeling fizheuer so much (yet?).

ampersand, hearts, semicolon (cis), Sunday, 5 November 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

How on earth do I go about pronouncing "Fizheuer Zieheuer"? I can sort of make out the first bit as "fis-hoy-[schwa]," but... "see-hoy-[schwa]"? That sounds off.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Sunday, 5 November 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)
