Has Kendrick done anything to make people acknowledge key hostile to him? I get why people can be annoyed by fan’s love, but they are fans. They’re excited.

lilsoulbrother, Thursday, 12 May 2022 01:59 (four years ago)

Omg, my autocorrect is a monster. I meant “has Kendrick done anything to have people low key hostile?” I apologize for the errors.

lilsoulbrother, Thursday, 12 May 2022 02:00 (four years ago)

Afaik he has nailed it in every step he has made. Also compared to other artists (ahem, Kanye) I appreciate how private he is about his personal life. I wasn’t even aware he had two children until I saw the new album cover.

Only “controversial” bit I can remember is him threatening to leave Spotify if XXXtentacion music was removed.

many xps had not gotten the Nipsey Hussle references, that may open the song for me, thx

corrs unplugged, Thursday, 12 May 2022 06:19 (four years ago)

that baby keem song still sounds great to me - prefer it to the new heart song thing

clouds (peanutbuttereverysingleday), Thursday, 12 May 2022 09:38 (four years ago)

idk sometimes with these very big albums they hold them back for a worldwide release aligned with the usa

It doesn't seem to be on Spotify in New Zealand yet.

Kendrick is so wild because he's the only rappity-rap-rap rapper that cool-kid discourse hasn't completely abandoned or deemed an anachronism

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 12 May 2022 19:39 (four years ago)

freddie gibbs? earl?

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Thursday, 12 May 2022 19:47 (four years ago)

earl is kind of a avant-garde dude now but Gibbs is a good one

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 12 May 2022 19:49 (four years ago)

What about Tyler the Creator? Or does he not really fit in a box?

MarkoP, Thursday, 12 May 2022 19:50 (four years ago)

i think what you guys are forgetting is that kendrick's "rappity raps" are better than anybody else's.

it's like daryl dawkins breaking backboards; lots of folks have done it, nobody rained glass down on people like him tho.

Tyler did like a whole album with no rapping on it that won a Grammy

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 12 May 2022 20:05 (four years ago)

Pusha?

Chappies banging dustbin lids together (President Keyes), Thursday, 12 May 2022 20:20 (four years ago)

pathetic pusha t moments

tyler fucked lucy for a grammy.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Thursday, 12 May 2022 20:23 (four years ago)

yeah, but Pusha just got a 7.8 in p4k. Not sure if that's cool kid discourse anymore tho.

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, May 12, 2022 1:05 PM

Yes, and then he put out an album last year that did have rapping on it, and also won a Grammy.

Unless, winning a Grammy disqualifies you from being part of the Cool Kid conversation, which is understandable. Grammys are for old out of touch folks.

MarkoP, Thursday, 12 May 2022 21:59 (four years ago)

kendrick has more grammys than tyler has albums.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Thursday, 12 May 2022 22:12 (four years ago)

should've made that a link to dawkins shattering the backboard.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Thursday, 12 May 2022 22:14 (four years ago)

not that grammys mean a fucking thing. but if that's the scoreboard we're going by . . .

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Thursday, 12 May 2022 22:18 (four years ago)

not sure how legit this is.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Thursday, 12 May 2022 22:59 (four years ago)

Bad Bunny’s release followed that same schedule so it was a surprise release worldwide so I think it could be true.

can a mod lock this thread if anyone else mentions the grammy awards?

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Thursday, 12 May 2022 23:01 (four years ago)

make me mod and i'll lock every thread except this one. literal #onethread now what?

okay, i'll stop now.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Thursday, 12 May 2022 23:15 (four years ago)

his new song is really refreshing. i see what whiney is saying, and my thought is that rappity-rap-rap should come back in vogue.

treeship., Thursday, 12 May 2022 23:24 (four years ago)

How many rappity-rap-rappers must get dissed?

Chappies banging dustbin lids together (President Keyes), Thursday, 12 May 2022 23:59 (four years ago)

Kendrick is so wild because he's the only rappity-rap-rap rapper that cool-kid discourse hasn't completely abandoned or deemed an anachronism

doesn't that make him something of an anachronism anyway or just that the others have been deemed more explicitly retro-throwback acts etc.

ufo, Friday, 13 May 2022 00:25 (four years ago)

Kendrick has never really seemed like a throwback though. When he did his Compton album it didn’t sound like gangsta rap, his jazzy album didn’t sound Soulquarian.

Chappies banging dustbin lids together (President Keyes), Friday, 13 May 2022 00:35 (four years ago)

there is realism at the center of his work which makes it contemporary no matter what sounds he is working with.

treeship., Friday, 13 May 2022 00:52 (four years ago)

it also sets him apart from many other rappers on the radio who trade in fantasy.

treeship., Friday, 13 May 2022 00:53 (four years ago)

oh yeah i shouldn't have said 'explicitly', he's not a throwback, just still very distinct in the current landscape

what i was trying to say more is that 'if he's the only one of those left isn't that in itself something of an anachronism'

ufo, Friday, 13 May 2022 01:01 (four years ago)

18 songs, 73 minutes, let’s do this

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 May 2022 04:01 (four years ago)

Quickly glanced the track list to see what kind of wild guests would be on this

And motherfucking Beth Gibbons is on the penultimate track

josh az (2011nostalgia), Friday, 13 May 2022 04:10 (four years ago)

oh it's shorter than TPAB lol

ufo, Friday, 13 May 2022 04:15 (four years ago)

about the same if you chop off that tupac “interview”

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 May 2022 04:17 (four years ago)

yeah just funny bc this is the one that's being presented as a double, just shows how meaningless the distinction can be

ufo, Friday, 13 May 2022 04:19 (four years ago)

GFK :)

brisk money (lukas), Friday, 13 May 2022 04:24 (four years ago)

good kid was a double cd in its bonus track version, like 90 plus minutes

thewufs, Friday, 13 May 2022 04:24 (four years ago)

first two tracks sound excellent

ufo, Friday, 13 May 2022 04:36 (four years ago)

gonna have to listen twice to actually process this. mostly just processing the decisions he made right now lol

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 May 2022 04:45 (four years ago)

kodak the last poet, ok, sure

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 May 2022 04:46 (four years ago)

hmm "auntie diaries" is well-meaning but a real fucking mess

ufo, Friday, 13 May 2022 05:22 (four years ago)

yah there are some real o_0 moments on the album, but that’s the one that just 100% totally misses the mark for me

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 May 2022 05:23 (four years ago)

i can at least grant that it's well-intentioned just like... totally naive still and he'd rightfully never give some well-meaning-but-naive white person a pass for taking the same approach re: race

"rich spirit" instant classic

he sounds more conflicted than ever. the way it ends is brilliant. a lot to process on one listen, but it immediately hits me as his most consistently personal work. oh, it's good tho.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Friday, 13 May 2022 05:35 (four years ago)

it’s very heavy and very busy and much too much for me to process at 1:45am lol

the beat on “silent hill” is sooooo good. and im comfortable saying that the first, penultimate, and final tracks on here are career highlights

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 May 2022 05:44 (four years ago)

there's a lot to take in but i'm a bit underwhelmed overall on first listen idk

those three are certainly highlights yeah

ufo, Friday, 13 May 2022 05:49 (four years ago)

"Rich Spirit" brilliant, agreed. It's gonna take some time to dig in.
