Hypocrisy - Penetralia

ok, there's a really terrible song title on this one (which I forgot about). but the album rips.

completely diff of course from the melo-death of later.

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 15:56 (four years ago)

epicus doomicus is up there with something like rust in peace for me, total classic

caught demolition hammer with immolation + mortician a month or two ago. prior to that, I'd somehow gone my whole life only listening to tortured existence (which rules) but holy shit epidemic of violence is some of the most aggressive thrash ever. (a shame about those "aborticide" lyrics tho, woof)

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 16:02 (four years ago)

I've also been watching confessor's 1998 performance at a water park in houston a lot lately

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5CgB4dB0NU

amazing

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 16:05 (four years ago)

I like Confessor a lot but man the vocals just rub me like nails on a chalkboard. (not his voice as much as his constant wailing and the weird melodic choices)

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 16:09 (four years ago)

Demolition Hammer rip. one big regret - they were playing at Maryland Deathfest in 2016, when I was there. I didn't know em at the time, and I had a complete mental breakdown at the festival that I was still in the middle of, so I walked over to watch someone else play instead.

bet i missed a killer set.

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 16:10 (four years ago)

(back to Confessor, though, don't take as a slag - metal that unique should always exist and be praised. but sometimes....oi).

HI RANDOM DOOM VOCALIST APPRECIATION LIST

my favs include

Eric Wagner (and I'm pissed at Wino for helping get him killed)

Messiah Marcolin (I realize there's people who think he is God, and some who find him really fucking annoying - I'm more in the 'very good but overrated' camp, but still recognize the 'very good')

Robert Lowe (my current favorite - Solitude Aeternus and late-era Candlemass fame)

Kayla Dixon/Uta Plotkin (both from Witch Mountain, Kayla being Uta's replacement. both brought their own unique style to the band - Kayla definitely doesn't try to ape Uta. and she comes from a musical theatre background.)

Brooks Wilson (Crypt Sermon - my current second favorite. he was phenomenal live last year, bringing a neo-Dio-flare to the fore)

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 16:21 (four years ago)

Saw Confessor on the Gods of Grind tour in 1992 maybe? (with Carcass, Cathedral and Entombed). The sound was pretty awful but the bass pretty much ruptured my sternum. Saw Demolition Hammer support (I think) Napalm Death around a similar time. Broootal gig.

After Eric Wagner, I think him off Solitude Aeturnus would be my favourite doom vocalist. I love Lee Dorian's voice too - especially on Forest of Equilibrium.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 19:20 (four years ago)

ahh good one, i've been listening to so much early ND lately I forgot how good Lee was in Cathedral

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 19:21 (four years ago)

So many things to check out on this thread. Crypt Sermon and Mortuary Drape coming right up.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 19:24 (four years ago)

xp Dorian rules.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 19:24 (four years ago)

I went to Lee Dorian's record shop in North London the other week (Rise Above Records), he served me and was very nice! We talked about Ashra records.

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 08:43 (four years ago)

Ché - Sounds of Liberation. It rips.

Mule, Wednesday, 11 May 2022 13:17 (four years ago)

Yeah, that Ché album is great. I was reminded of it because I've just started getting into Fu Manchu, a band I heard a song of two by over the years but never really put any time into. And honestly, I don't need more than two or three albums (they've got about a dozen), but at their best they're really good.

Another cool one-off from that scene/era is the self-titled album by Brant Bjork & The Operators, which adds some New Wave synths to the baked-out desert rock sound.

http://brantbjork.bandcamp.com/album/brant-bjork-the-operators

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 13:35 (four years ago)

Fu Manchu is kind of new to me too, actually. One of those bands that have just been out there, churning out albums, but which I’ve sort of just ignored. But I’m on a desert rock run these days, so have been checking out various stuff. Will check out the BB & the Operators album

Mule, Wednesday, 11 May 2022 14:04 (four years ago)

Fu Manchu's In Search of is the one I return to the most, absolutely massive guitar tone. Coincidentally, I'm listening to the pre-FM band Virulence rn, very much a late Black Flag tribute but still good.

made entirely of styrofoam (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 14:18 (four years ago)

Yeah, In Search Of is pretty rad

Mule, Wednesday, 11 May 2022 14:24 (four years ago)

Love Fu Manchu! In Search Of... is all time for me. I saw them on that tour in a sweatbox in King's Cross. Magnificent.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 14:44 (four years ago)

Nebula (featuring members of early Fu Manchu) are even better. Fu Manchu went really off the boil with the really bad 'California Crossing' and never touched the greatness of what came before after it

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 18:28 (four years ago)

Brant Bjork - Jalamanta, is the one of his I return to most but he's pretty consistent.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 18:29 (four years ago)

Colour Haze - Los Sound de Krauts just got a vinyl reissue and its one of the great stoner rock albums. There's quite a few ilxors who will stan for them iirc

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 18:32 (four years ago)

Boris - Heavy Rocks (the 1st one with the orange cover from 2002) is highly recommended stoner rock if anyone wants to check it out. Wish it would get a vinyl issue.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 18:35 (four years ago)

Colour Haze is absolutely terrific.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 18:45 (four years ago)

What I'm looking for more than anything is a band that's kind of right in the sweet spot between Nebula and Earthless. I like instrumentals, but I like big hooky riffs; I like bands that jam, but sometimes 10 minutes is better than 30. Got any recommendations?

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 18:48 (four years ago)

Definitely try Colour Haze then if you haven't already!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 18:50 (four years ago)

You might dig some of Wo Fat, Truckfighters or Ufomammut. They don't always tick all of those boxes on every song (some vocals, etc) but they might land in that realm.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 18:51 (four years ago)

or Lowrider. Early Dozer comes to mind too

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 18:51 (four years ago)

Monster Magnet - Spine Of God is another album I'd recommend. Its quite different to the (also great) stuff that came after, but the McBain era was something else.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 18:54 (four years ago)

Another brilliant but not so well known album is Tumuli Shroomaroom by Acrimony. It came out in '97 but did get reissued a few years back
https://open.spotify.com/album/12XvsurHh60DXJCz2heaLz?si=14cYvPG-T9qxoUCvLURHQw

Hymns to the Stone is a good track in the vein of the epic Kyuss songs like 50 million year trip.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 19:51 (four years ago)

Been picking up some Original Album Series comps, they are such a godsend. Seen Overkill's The Atlantic Years and some reviews complained it was quiet, surely this can be cured by turning it up?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 12 May 2022 00:12 (four years ago)

hard to believe any metal album mastered after 2000 could be described as "quiet"

made entirely of styrofoam (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 12 May 2022 02:23 (four years ago)

Maybe I should be more cautious than buying these sets because there has been a handful of metal classics I just didn't get at all but I'm very intrigued about Overkill

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 12 May 2022 02:39 (four years ago)

Overkill rulz

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Thursday, 12 May 2022 04:36 (four years ago)

Hypocrisy - pretty much most of their catalog, sans a few bummer albums in the early 21st century.

it's weird in that nobody really rates Hypocrisy's albums as classic (those that do are usually talking about Obsculum Obscenum), but they write consistently good music, even if they peaked in the late 90s. I have a soft spot in my heart for them as The Final Chapter was one of my first 25 metal albums when I was a late teen.

so tonight i'm listening to Abducted, and "Roswell 47" is so badass, but I love how "Killing Art" is an extremely aggressive follow-up. Hypocrisy weren't afraid to rawk while also doing the melodically sensible stuff.

also here is me and Pete Tagtgren

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 May 2022 02:25 (four years ago)

The Fourth Dimension is one of my favourite Death Metal albums of the 90s, just before they started to incorporate the melodeath influences.

Siegbran, Friday, 13 May 2022 07:52 (four years ago)

Hehehe. Great picture.

In the same way that ducks must get sick of people doing duck noises whenever they see them, do you think death metal band members tire of having to look cadaverous and make devil horns? I reckon (and hope) it's a no.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 13 May 2022 15:53 (four years ago)

There's my next metal symposium paper: Duck noises and the erosion of affect: iconography fatigue in death metal frontmen.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 13 May 2022 15:55 (four years ago)

Oh I'm sure there are days where they're like "ugh, I gotta do caveman face AGAIN?"

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 May 2022 16:55 (four years ago)

I do remember the Opeth frontman talking about feeling embarrassed when he did these sorts of poses (once with a sword), it didn't come naturally to him

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 13 May 2022 19:03 (four years ago)

I mean it *is* performative, like, when I'm drunk it comes easy but I'm more self-conscious about silliness like that when sober.

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 May 2022 20:06 (four years ago)

trying to imagine what Mikael is thinking during those pics

"man, I wonder what Steve Howe is doing right now?"

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 May 2022 20:06 (four years ago)

Maybe not strictly 'metal' but Scott Seward was a big fan of this band as was I, and I know LJ & TT, Simon and Brad will be interested, and I just want to say that after all this time Gospel have finally dropped a follow up album to The Moon Is A Dead World, and its brilliant.

two weeks pass...

Whenever I'm in Fopp looking at the metal section I wish I had Neanderthal and Siegbran over my shoulder advising me on albums because I find the titles hard to remember, a bit like martial arts films, so many similar titles. But I got...

Overkill - Atlantic Years
Saxon - Wheels Of Steel
Cryptopsy - None So Vile (been on my wishlist forever)
Exodus - Bonded By Blood
Voivod - Synchro Anarchy (doesn't count because it's new)

And I just started listening to Testament's The Legacy

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 2 June 2022 14:18 (four years ago)

None so Vile rullllleees

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Thursday, 2 June 2022 14:51 (four years ago)

Wheels Of Steel the song has the best riff

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 2 June 2022 14:55 (four years ago)

Voivod - Synchro Anarchy

Seeing them tonight (my first concert in 2.5 years). Maybe I should listen to the album.

jmm, Thursday, 2 June 2022 14:56 (four years ago)

um YES. it's fantastic. not quite The Wake but up there.

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Thursday, 2 June 2022 15:06 (four years ago)

Saxon - Wheels Of Steel

Pretty nice haul tbh I would blast any/all of these

Now speaking of that Saxon choice, enjoy this from former board denizen Jeff T.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 June 2022 16:09 (four years ago)

Absolutely digging EF Band lately, super hard rocking Swe/UK band and the second track on this is a go-hard instrumental on the level of Pink Fairies' "Raceway"

Just hearing this for the first time. Its great.

o. nate, Monday, 13 May 2024 20:38 (two years ago)

This is one of the greatest examples I can think of of a band that isn't great in general, but has one song that absolutely fucking rules, and this is that song. I listen to this, like, once a month at minimum:

not exactly old but i'm really psyched on this. exactly what i want from stoner metal. kind of simple on paper but they really have a vibe idk, so much space and flow. amazing singer.
