RSD prep at work meant I couldn't play along today. Excellent results. No complaints at all really. Big surprise at Instant Crush making it but it was on my list. It wouldn't sound out of place on Comedown Machine aka the second best Strokes album. Get Lucky at 11 seems about right. It's strange to think it won our poll for that year. I doubt it'll do as well when we finally do our 2010s poll. Same for the album.

Did every song from Discovery make the top 60 then? Hoping Digital Love is number one, but any of those songs would be worthy.

I guess the backlash is warranted for a song that was as hyped as "Get Lucky", but goddamn if that song song didn't go straight to my amygdala the first time I heard the teaser clip.

enochroot, Saturday, 23 April 2022 01:45 (four years ago)

"get lucky" isn't bad but it's been overplayed and overrated to death, it's nowhere near deserving of all the 'song of the year' accolades it got

the extended mix on the album weirdly makes it worse too, just doesn't flow anywhere near as well

ufo, Saturday, 23 April 2022 01:48 (four years ago)

I can still enjoy Get Lucky now but yeah, it did lose some of the magic after being everywhere for so long. I do still think about how exciting those teaser clips were. It was a perfect single campaign.

kitchen person, Saturday, 23 April 2022 02:03 (four years ago)

One of the ONLY single campaigns I can really remember tbh.

This is sort of how I feel about Daft Punk in general. Ever since around the time of the Coachella pyramid gig, I think it's fair to say that they've been fully appreciated (possibly over-appreciated?). It feels slightly arbitrary to me that they were the ones admitted to the canon and not, say, Basement Jaxx.

enochroot, Saturday, 23 April 2022 02:25 (four years ago)

i prefer the first three basement jaxx albums to any daft punk album, but daft punk hit higher highs with their best singles

certainly a shame they ended up somehow missing out on canonisation despite being critically adored at the time

ufo, Saturday, 23 April 2022 02:30 (four years ago)

As much as I then preferred BJ (and might still), their super-sized tracks sound a lot more dated now than DP's.

Max Hamburgers (Eric H.), Saturday, 23 April 2022 02:33 (four years ago)

It's true that they definitely didn't age as well. (but maybe if they'd spent $30k on LED helmets we'd be doing a BJ poll)

enochroot, Saturday, 23 April 2022 02:37 (four years ago)

I just listened to Kish Kash a few days ago. It's still brilliant.

kitchen person, Saturday, 23 April 2022 02:43 (four years ago)

Red Alert still sounds great!

i want to attribute the canonization to the fact that Homework had such self confidence and swagger for a debut album
but in reality it was likely Discovery which was the beginning of them abandoning some of the directions Homework pursued

but did they ever have anything as subtle as Revolution 909? i wish they did

scanner darkly, Saturday, 23 April 2022 05:03 (four years ago)

Did every song from Discovery make the top 60 then?

Pour one out for "Nightvision"

Vinnie, Saturday, 23 April 2022 05:28 (four years ago)

“Nymphae Song” was my only Le Knight Club track on my ballot, think it’s the best one of the bunch, although “Boogie Shell” is pretty great too. “Holiday On Ice” is good but really too similar to “Around The World”, might as well be called a remix of that.

Siegbran, Saturday, 23 April 2022 08:07 (four years ago)

I didn’t vote for any of the mashups. Enjoyable but so many DJs have made excellent mashups in livesets and bootlegs - the Stuntmasterz mashup of “Holiday” and “Music Sounds Better With You” would probably beat all of the Alive ones for me.

Siegbran, Saturday, 23 April 2022 08:13 (four years ago)

Just realised, “Paris By Night” and “Shock Rock” not even making top 75, wow.

Siegbran, Saturday, 23 April 2022 08:26 (four years ago)

So One More Time is #6? That feels right to me, as it didn’t make my ballot. I can certainly appreciate that it’s a classic and worthy of belonging in the upper echelons of the DP canon. But from the first time I heard it, the song has always felt like the most one dimensional and transparent play for the dance floor (compared even to Homework) in their catalogue.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 23 April 2022 09:06 (four years ago)

I'd call even some of their best songs one-dimensional but strong enough in that dimension to stand repeated listens

Vinnie, Saturday, 23 April 2022 11:54 (four years ago)

Fair.

Ok, somehow I didn’t know Music Sounds Better With You at all. It’s kind of wild this is going to place top 5 in this poll, and I’m enjoying this but … really, one of the best songs of the 90s?

I do maybe like it better than One More Time. And, holy shit is the Gondry video great. So …

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 23 April 2022 12:10 (four years ago)

"music sounds better with you" is surely heavily responsible for "love at first sight" which is like the best song ever so at the very least it deserves a ton of credit for that

ufo, Saturday, 23 April 2022 12:50 (four years ago)

I guess it doesn’t sound as impactful as an adult in 2022, hearing it as a teenager in 1998 was mindblowing though.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 23 April 2022 13:02 (four years ago)

At this point it sounds like it’s been done a million times, in 1998 it sounded like it came from another dimension.

Also yeah video is a classic.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 23 April 2022 13:04 (four years ago)

I didn’t vote in the poll and loving results so far, but hope Stardust wins it. It’s either that one or “around the world” for me. Those are the ones that best define their sound imho and were really something else at their time of release.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 23 April 2022 13:20 (four years ago)

Now that my top 3 have all placed I hope either Stardust or Digital Love win

ignore the blue line (or something), Saturday, 23 April 2022 13:44 (four years ago)

Tried to post a few times on the Flagging app over the last couple of days but it wouldn't let me so sorry to miss so much of the rundown.

Gutted to see Colossus and Ventura just miss out - probably my two favourite solo Bangalter tracks

nashwan, Saturday, 23 April 2022 13:50 (four years ago)

And I thought Crydajam's 'If You Give Me The Love I Want' would do deservedly better given it was boosted on the initial thread.

nashwan, Saturday, 23 April 2022 13:53 (four years ago)

from what i saw de homem-christo didn't actually contribute to it - he only worked on "playground" out of the crydajam tracks - so i didn't end up considering it for my ballot

ufo, Saturday, 23 April 2022 14:13 (four years ago)

Yeah, as soon as I heard it “Music Sounds Better With You” was instantly top song of the decade, and hasn’t lost any of its power since.

Siegbran, Saturday, 23 April 2022 14:20 (four years ago)

I voted for both Colossus and Ventura (and also Outrun) xps

groovypanda, Saturday, 23 April 2022 15:03 (four years ago)

Good to see Face To Face so high up. And Something About Us.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Saturday, 23 April 2022 16:20 (four years ago)

I'm going through that top 75 giving all of the tracks that didn't make my ballot another listen - wow that DJ Mehdi remix is a total banger. Still baffled by the non-placement of the Bangalter Rock Shock remix, it was a big hit during the prime Daft Punk era, do people really dislike it that much?

Siegbran, Saturday, 23 April 2022 16:56 (four years ago)

I don't remember it from the time but having watched that video, which is tbf a sub optimal way to experience the track, I can say that yes I do dislike it that much

ignore the blue line (or something), Saturday, 23 April 2022 17:13 (four years ago)

I will add to the MSBWY praise, even though it hasn't placed yet. It was so so huge when it came out, at least where I'm from. It was kind of like Homework but slightly poppier and it just hit the perfect spot. I feel like One More Time tried to build on that and went slightly overboard.

Spotify is updated and thanks to those who have been staying on top of that. It's going to be a great playlist.

Rock Shock remix is great (and the Joel Lava video even more so) but didn't hear it until a few years later. Just missed my ballot.

nashwan, Saturday, 23 April 2022 18:43 (four years ago)

the points are really, really close for the next two songs and then number three isn't that far up number wise either.

My #1. I bought the album for Da Funk and was blown away that they had another song just as good or even better.
