Tbh I find them literally unlistenable for the most part, but I'm weirdly fascinated by them as people and I will probably listen to all these interviews that Rick Rubin is doing with the members on his podcast.

I probably asked this somewhere already but do you guys notice a similarity between "Soul to Squeeze" (top ten all time rhcp song) and 'no woman no cry'

Does anyone really like the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

I am listening to this thing: it is I suppose somewhat odd (?) or is it very typical (?) for these guys who consider themselves such avant-ass, out there artists to make music that seems so ordinary, or at least ordinary via the standards of radio friendly modern rock of 1999-2002…in particular Frusciante has done rather a lot of challenging shit on his own, but when he comes back to the band, his contributions are without any flair whatsover… where's the Neu influence, where's the Brandy influence? Why can't anyone hear that? Or perhaps he thinks that RHCP's place is to be basic, or maybe the other two tell him, despite their rep, that this is high stakes, no risk shit that's intended to command the attention of the middle aged modern rock audience, and so he tries and succeeds to write basic modern rock… the proper analog is Eagles or Aerosmith; those guys don't walk around acting like they're Helios Creed, they act like they're making big budget rock music…
Fles: Geez Anthony, I'm wounded by Nick Cave's comment…
Anthony: Yeah, he's our peer, why doesn't he see how adventurous we are?
Frusc: Yeah, it's not like he's the Durutti Column, but I like the Birthday Party OK…
Chad: Who's Nick Cave?

i guess i know where you’re coming from but there are literally john martyn whale sounds in “not the one”
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2022 17:58 (two years ago) link
I did check out a few of the new tracks due to how Sodomsky talked about Frusciante's guitar work, and it's like... yeah, these 5-second solos are slightly "elevated" by the standards of typical KROQ fare, but that's about it(?) I dunno, I just don't hear it.

(but then I also don’t enjoy F’s solo stuff, I guess he’s just not for me)
― ass time permits (morrisp), Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:35 (two years ago) link
I think that's what they do though: take something that used to be cool then totally corporatize and whitewash it for mass consumption. Make questionable and nonsensical innuendoes everywhere, have a guitarist with tons of cred and yeah: this fucken garbage rocks????
New album is pretty bad. Too new to properly assess, but I haven't disliked anything of theirs this much since One Hot Minute.
― Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:36 (two years ago) link
it's easy to miss imo bc he's a tasteful underplayer; his personality mainly asserts itself in forms like the liquid run of notes he does in the chorus of "whatchu thinkin'," i don't know of another player who can be so oceanic and spectral while also playing counterpoint to a musician like flea. navarro and klinghoffer def weren't, navarro was more like this alt-metal storm and klinghoffer played like a radio dial stuck between two very different classic rock stations
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:47 (two years ago) link
Sorry . . . rereading my previous response, it comes off very snide. Not how I meant it at all.
Just very repulsed by this new record. I mean wow— people thought music in the late 80s was too processed and overproduced???? Makes sense that's when these guys rose to prominence.
Ugh, sorry. I'm doing it again. But jeez, this album isn't very good.
Also Brad otm: JF is an asset to any band he's playing in.
― Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:49 (two years ago) link
also: i love frusciante as a songwriter, his imprint is unmistakable, and from what i can tell the remaining chili peppers love playing with him because songs just sort of form in the air when they're jamming; but the reason i like this band is that it's way less about one guitarist for me than how they all mesh together as musicians
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:50 (two years ago) link
On heavier material, Frusciante is less busy. But on the softer/cleaner material, he way overuses pull-offs and hammer-ons like a Hendrix or Page Guitar Center nerd.

posts like that make me happy i don't even know what a guitar is
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2022 18:53 (two years ago) link
other "cool" things frusc likely smuggled into the record but idk flea's taste is equally if not more cool so ymmv: the breakdowns in "these are the ways" are kinda post-hardcore

i think now that it's been ten years i can say that frusciante's glitchfuck records from the early 2010s are good

klinghoffer played like a radio dial stuck between two very different classic rock stations
thought about this more and it's more like a radio dial stuck between a classic rock and a new wave station. i like klinghoffer a lot, that he's hard to pin down is good
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 April 2022 20:28 (two years ago) link
It’s interesting how, this time around, critics are like “if I gotta review this thing, what if I just focus on the guitarist?”
― Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 3 April 2022 20:41 (two years ago) link
(Maybe that’s happened in the past though I and I’m not remembering.)
Well, tbf, the guitarist position has been a revolving door for 30 years.

there's a tribute band that's come around here a few times called "Red Hot Chili Pipers"...feel like that should be off-limits as a band name right? I do a double take every time I see it on the marquee
― frogbs, Monday, 4 April 2022 03:45 (two years ago) link

Some excellent instrumentals on the new record but Kiedis is even more of a dork than usual
― thewufs, Tuesday, 5 April 2022 15:05 (two years ago) link
At this point they should just become the John Frusciante Experience and let Kiedis retire to his yoga room. Or turn him over to the LAPD’s sex crimes unit.
― thewufs, Tuesday, 5 April 2022 15:06 (two years ago) link
wufs on the mark. This album sucks and I'm tired of hearing about this group of creepy, habitual underachievers. Bring back Atoms for Peace and let Fruscinate sit in.

I mean I’m actually a fan of their work through By the Way - usually I can just tune out Kiedis’s inanities. And as bad a singer and person Kiedis is, he does have the capacity to turn out a good lyric on the rare occasion when he’s honest about himself (“Warped”).

i saw the first appearance of JF after he left the chi peps and got super burned up in a speedball fire. it was one of the most unnerving performances i've ever seen. i'm glad he's still alive.
― kurt schwitterz, Friday, 8 April 2022 17:31 (two years ago) link
Shocked by how much I don't actually hate this. The lyrics are almost uniformly terrible and Kiedis remains the weak link and a huge sleazy dork, but instrumentally there is a lot to like.
Fwiw, One Hot Minute is one of my favorite RHCP albums, so makes sense.
