man i really think that song is boring as hell - i was being a bit fatalistic on the r&b thread/jukebox but i do think it's a really below average song - don't see how the production is really at all noteworthy

okay I take that back somewhat, the second half of "I'mma Star" is pretty great
"Birthday Sex" is just stupid, though, and not nearly as fun as it should be

cool showy synth textures, rhythm constantly shifting between triplets and straight 4/4, a big dramatic outro that sounds completely different from the rest of the song -- ymmv, but it has a lot going for it that is 'noteworthy' in the context of the stuff it's being played between on R&B radio.

Fell under the spell of "Imma Star" and grabbed the album. I agree that a lot of it is really samey, but I'm loving "My Sunshine" right now. "Runway" is pretty awes too.

the last minute or so of "imma star" is really good, it's basically mid-level dream but that's cool w/ me. ship, when you're lauding its "outro" are you talking about that or the strings @ the end?
the rest of the song is bland as fuck, tho
― 8080's and internet break (k3vin k.), Sunday, 2 August 2009 22:25 (sixteen years ago)
You know the really awesome thing about "Birthday Sex" that no one ever talks about is those Aretha "aahhhhr-OOTS!" that pop up during the bridge. Somehow all the retro-soulers have left it to a teenager to bring back that one.
― k. k3ller & public admin log (The Reverend), Monday, 3 August 2009 02:04 (sixteen years ago)
the bridge is great - the drum rolls coming up to the "aahhhr-OOTS!" part are awz too

Is this "up-tempo" mix of "Birthday Sex" at the end of the album the shitty technoid version yall were complaining about? It is kinda :'(
Album isn't as bad as yall are making out. Not on a Dream/E Red level, but I like it on a Ciara/Foxx level.

― murda mo not mo murda (some dude), Friday, 18 September 2009 02:22 (sixteen years ago)
basically i like all the songs on the album - i can see how people might hear it as generic, or (staaaans) terius-jocking, or repetitive, but i guess what it comes down to is i like the kid jeremih a lot (andy k compares him to saadiq in his amg review - otm!!) and you really get the feeling this is exactly what he and the schulz guy always wanted to make; there's real charm and talent in the attention to detail they've put in to what is pretty much the most 2009 record you will ever hear that even when it's on something i wouldnt normally be mad for like the gaga-goth europop on 'runway' it still draws me into their shit cos it's somehow just theirs and theirs alone, i dunno.
― r|t|c, Friday, 18 September 2009 02:27 (sixteen years ago)
nearly embarked on a schulz - peanuts folly there BUT I DIDNT
― r|t|c, Friday, 18 September 2009 02:28 (sixteen years ago)
yeah listening to those last couple songs I heard a little bit of a certain high joyful tone I identify most w/ Saadiq and (dare I say it) Stevie Wonder -- always annoyed me when people referred to "Birthday Sex" as being somehow post-Dream when if anything it's just yet another guy with a high voice who's similarly post-R.
― murda mo not mo murda (some dude), Friday, 18 September 2009 02:41 (sixteen years ago)
like ok, 'jumpin' there is on the face of it like every lame ron browz wannabe banger you expect to come across - but tell me that's wack, with that rollercoaster chorus and all? shit is riveting imo.
ha i didnt dare say stevie either! that breakdown on 'starting all over' in partic is just pure class for a hundred reasons: i'm saying hacks is the last thing these guys are.
the thing about post-dream/post-r is that yeah (musico)logically of course it's post-r because that's what the-dream is. but yknow, not playing dollshouse or anything but i could well imagine terius being more of an issue in these guy's minds as they were making it. in any case however it's wayyyy more interesting as post-dream just because of the delicious irony of 'birthday sex' in its mystic obviousness actually being a genuine international solo hit: time will wash this irritation from the history books but never, i bet, from terius' very psyche. (or so i like to imagine.)
