These are irrational by definition, right? Big Thief.

clemenza, Wednesday, 9 March 2022 14:00 (four years ago)

Up until the release of U.F.O.F., I was under the impression that Big Thief were a punk or garage rock band.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 9 March 2022 14:34 (four years ago)

Confused with early 90s Sub Pop band Big Chief, maybe?

peace, man, Wednesday, 9 March 2022 14:48 (four years ago)

Nah. Just something about their first two album covers just made me think they were on the noisier, punkier end of things.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 9 March 2022 15:00 (four years ago)

otm, seconded on Big Thief.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 10 March 2022 18:02 (four years ago)

Why did you guys not like the name Big Thief?

stealing is rong

i read to 69 position (Neanderthal), Thursday, 10 March 2022 19:17 (four years ago)

Sounds bad 80s sophistipop to me, rather than punk.

Alba, Thursday, 10 March 2022 19:20 (four years ago)

Well, they're not punk (ha ha)

I thought it was a cool name even before I liked the band; seems like one of those objectively "good band names" to me

Not Dork Yet (alternate toke) (morrisp), Thursday, 10 March 2022 20:04 (four years ago)

this is a funny thread to read and then look at everyone's usernames

rob, Thursday, 10 March 2022 20:12 (four years ago)

maybe another thread but I wonder what's the best band with the worst name. probably My Bloody Valentine but I would argue it's actually Beardfish.

frogbs, Thursday, 10 March 2022 20:15 (four years ago)

not a band, but Wizkid seems like a contender.

Otto Insurance (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 10 March 2022 21:35 (four years ago)

Why did you guys not like the name Big Thief?

I can't explain this, but the first time I heard that, I thought of some blues-leaning bar band--pretty much my least favourite thing in the world. So I still haven't investigated. I take it my ignoring and writing off is woefully off the mark.

clemenza, Thursday, 10 March 2022 21:49 (four years ago)

Big Thief is the worst band name I could imagine. It simultaneously doesn't mean anything, and it lacks visual description, and it sounds like a shitty cover band, as clemenza describes. It's a combination of brief words that leads you... nowhere. So I assumed the music would do the same thing. And, to be honest, they're not my thing at all.

paulhw, Thursday, 10 March 2022 23:23 (four years ago)

A search for the origin of their name led me to this NPR article’s valiant effort to create intrigue.

Alba, Friday, 11 March 2022 07:22 (four years ago)

Adriannie would be a good band name.

Alba, Friday, 11 March 2022 07:25 (four years ago)

Car Seat Headrest. I simply refuse to contemplate listening to a band with a 'quick, think of something' name like that.

giraffe, Friday, 11 March 2022 08:52 (four years ago)

Dry Cleaning is another one like that.

Alfred Ndwego of Kenya (Tom D.), Friday, 11 March 2022 09:51 (four years ago)

Aaahah! Big Thief is a Berklee band. That explains some of why they leave me cold. That grey competence. Wonder if they were aware of the Berklee band Big Wreck?

bendy, Friday, 11 March 2022 13:26 (four years ago)

Headrest would be a pretty good band name. Car Seat Headrest is just clunky and awkward.

Hideous Lump, Friday, 11 March 2022 14:25 (four years ago)

Car Seat (For Babies) would be a pretty good band name

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 11 March 2022 14:33 (four years ago)

i don't like car seat headrest, but doesn't it refer to where he would write/record his songs, in the back seat, leaning his head against the back of the frontseat headrest, so that he read the lyrics/record while looking down on his lap, or something? that'll probably get eyerolls from people but to me that's a classic lo-fi recording situation where you have no privacy, anywhere, ever, and you just have to find a spot and make it work. so...i like the name

the world's undisputed #1 fan of 'Spud Infinity' (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 March 2022 16:14 (four years ago)

car seat (for babies) is a better name though, lol

Meek and Lenker named the group Big Thief after an idea they learned in a songwriting workshop in Texas about “a trickster or thief that borrows from the collective conscious, and regenerates ideas and integrates them into his or her identity.”

Well I was fine with big thief as a name before and now I hate it

, Friday, 11 March 2022 16:56 (four years ago)

The “Big” in Big Thief is what has always annoyed me. It’s just a bland and easily forgotten name. Not close to the worst mentioned on this thread, though.

beard papa, Friday, 11 March 2022 18:12 (four years ago)

yeah I agree with Paul's post above, Big Thief isn't offensive or annoying it's just a bad name that to me recalls prog bands like Big Big Train and Pineapple Thief, which they don't sound anything like. Black Country, New Road is another one of those, like what, if anything, does that mean?

frogbs, Friday, 11 March 2022 18:24 (four years ago)

Counting Crows.

Supposedly it's a road in the West Midlands ... and a shit name for a band.

Alfred Ndwego of Kenya (Tom D.), Friday, 11 March 2022 19:49 (four years ago)

looks like a shit road too tbh
