The drummer for sure is going for Mick Fleetwood mimicry in the "Happy With You" clip.

i don't care what anyone says, he IS mick fleetwood

Good album
Waaaaaayyy overrated

― calstars, Sunday, 6 March 2022 00:59 (yesterday) link

Genuinely feel the opposite — the number of people that will love this band but don’t know they exist is still very large

xheugy eddy (D-40), Monday, 7 March 2022 22:40 (four years ago)

Agreed. Broad consensus among the top 0.1% of US/UK based music nerds that the album is good =/= overrated. It's currently only the 9th highest ranked album on albumoftheyear, and it's March 7th. Pitchfork gave it a 9.0 (same score they gave Promises and Ignorance last year), NME a 4/5, Allmusic & Rolling Stone a 3.5/5...

Indexed, Monday, 7 March 2022 22:55 (four years ago)

RS gave it a 3.5?!

Not Dork Yet (alternate toke) (morrisp), Monday, 7 March 2022 23:16 (four years ago)

i give RS a 2.5

the world's undisputed #1 fan of 'Spud Infinity' (Karl Malone), Monday, 7 March 2022 23:16 (four years ago)

weird, i would think this is a very RS-friendly record

class project pat (m bison), Monday, 7 March 2022 23:25 (four years ago)

like i could play this for my parents, its right in their wheelhouse

class project pat (m bison), Monday, 7 March 2022 23:25 (four years ago)

I mentioned it to my dad; don't know if he's checked it out (I told him that his neighbor, a "music guy" who's some kind of Ween superfan, is probably aware of Big Thief).

Not Dork Yet (alternate toke) (morrisp), Monday, 7 March 2022 23:31 (four years ago)

For what it’s worth, the reviewer said on the popcast he’d probably give it a four now and maybe he’ll give it a 4.5 a year from now … or something like that … on the popcast. I notice a lot of reviewers, like the sound opinions guys, being really cautious about hyperbole while also seeming to admit they absolutely love half the album

xheugy eddy (D-40), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 00:27 (four years ago)

That seems like a wack way to review an album, but what do I know.

Not Dork Yet (alternate toke) (morrisp), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 01:05 (four years ago)

yeah, i typed a couple thoughts about that and deleted them, ha. weird and kind of revealing of the way they approach life

the world's undisputed #1 fan of 'Spud Infinity' (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 01:08 (four years ago)

love to be the first say the emperor has no clothes when he probably does and they're probably wonderful clothes but hey whatever what if right

Clay, Tuesday, 8 March 2022 01:29 (four years ago)

but if you're wrong, and they had no clothes, just think about how good that would feel

the world's undisputed #1 fan of 'Spud Infinity' (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 01:35 (four years ago)

or, conversely, imagine taking music advice from someone who is like "i don't know! we'll see how everyone else reacts?!?!?!!??!"

the world's undisputed #1 fan of 'Spud Infinity' (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 01:35 (four years ago)

3.5 isn't no clothes, it's, The Emperor looks pretty good, really, but the outfit needs something to pull it all together. (And that something is Spud Infinity obv.)

Just looked the up the review; it’s OK, if very much in the “describe each song” mode.

Not Dork Yet (alternate toke) (morrisp), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 02:32 (four years ago)

this band is obviously good. publications should err on the side of overhyping them and any other good band.

xp Yeah, I like when reviewers sound excited about good music, and make you excited to hear it. It’s also totally possible to do that without lapsing into “hyperbole.”

Not Dork Yet (alternate toke) (morrisp), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 02:43 (four years ago)

(Also, it’s just so clearly at least a 4-star record on the RS scale)

Not Dork Yet (alternate toke) (morrisp), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 02:47 (four years ago)

I used to have a list in my head of all the 3.5 star albums I was mad about. I've forgotten most of them, but I know one was the Pogues' If I Should Fall From Grace With God.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 03:02 (four years ago)

would our culture be healthier if people put more stock in critical consensus?

that isn't rhetorical. i'm not sure. it feels like when i was younger, art "mattered" more.

treeship., Tuesday, 8 March 2022 03:09 (four years ago)

today there is no shortage of great music but it feels marginal to the zeitgeist

Found this episode especially obnoxious because Caramanica ostensibly wanted to have a discussion about what other smart people he respects hear in this band and yet he barely gave Sodomsky a chance to talk and kept going back to annoying explanations like how the band isn't actually special but is simply filling some collective space that he thinks exists in indie rock because he doesn't listen to indie rock I guess?

Indexed, Tuesday, 8 March 2022 17:52 (four years ago)

Caramanica was awful.

i am feeling really good about my innate ability to never listen to podcasts. holy moley that show sounds terrible

The ones where Caramanica plays more of the host role with "the whole crew" (Jon Pareles, Lindsay Zoladz, Joe Coscarelli, Caryn Ganz) are generally good.

This piece finds a new(?) double-LP comparison: Stephen Stills’ Manassas (which I’ve never heard of).

u swear (morrisp), Saturday, 12 March 2022 15:23 (four years ago)

Oh I have that Manassas album! Haven’t played it in years and the only song I remember of it is Johnny’s Garden though.

Quite obscure album to bring up tbh

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 12 March 2022 16:06 (four years ago)

that's a pretty song...a pity Stills has to sing

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 12 March 2022 16:10 (four years ago)

my Dad was always a huge Nel Young and CSNY fan, insisted Stills only decent non CSN or CSNY project was that Manassas record.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Saturday, 12 March 2022 18:59 (four years ago)

Nel.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Saturday, 12 March 2022 18:59 (four years ago)

I fuck w that Manassass record. It is remarkably solid for a Stills-helmed double lp (but tbh I can’t really speak to much of his non-CSN(Y) or Buffalo Springfield work)

OG Bob Sacamano (will), Sunday, 13 March 2022 01:04 (four years ago)

two weeks pass...

This album still smacks and at the weekend I took my guitar into the garden and played passable renditions of 'Spud Infinity' and 'Red Moon' to my long suffering neighbours

Heh. Awakening six minutes ago, I had "No Reason" and its flute part in my head.

excellent radio session, including a very energetic version of "red moon and the highest-quality recording of the rock "dragon" so far

ufo, Wednesday, 13 April 2022 22:10 (four years ago)

whoa that version of dragon is excellent

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Thursday, 14 April 2022 15:35 (four years ago)

yeah it's really something

that little breakdown near the end of "Red Moon" is awesome! :)

begrudgingly bound by duty of candor (morrisp), Thursday, 14 April 2022 16:43 (four years ago)

here's a question that may hurt, a little. the snake's poison. what are the WORST TWO songs?

if i had to boot two, i would first boot Dried Roses. then, with much hesitation, i would show Sparrow to the door. i would apologize to them both
