Dear @officialmoz . An ‘open letter’ hasn’t really been a thing since 1953, It’s all ‘social media’ now. Even Donald J Trump had that one down. Also, this fake news business…a bit 2021 yeah ?#makingindiegreatagain

The stuff about reggae in that 1986 MM interview up there is unhinged; what the hell had been listening to?

fetter, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 11:44 (two years ago) link

i imagine it's a gloss on garveyism and i doubt it's based on listening at all

mark s, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 12:07 (two years ago) link

Morrissey's 'letter' seems to me the single worst thing he's ever done.

A bit disappointed to see, here, that Marr has replied. It should be beneath him. He's always been better at serenity.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 12:12 (two years ago) link

"This is not a rant or an hysterical bombast..."

It is exactly that!

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 26 January 2022 20:25 (two years ago) link

If dummy wants to extricate himself from Marr he should stop playing songs by the Smiths.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 20:37 (two years ago) link

Anyone know what triggered it?

As most of the commentary I've seen today has been along the lines of "When I interviewed Marr he was very reluctant to discuss Morrissey."

groovypanda, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 20:45 (two years ago) link

The Guardian:

Marr is promoting a new solo album, Fever Dreams Pts 1-4. His offending remarks appear to come from the March 2022 issue of Uncut magazine, in which he mentions Morrissey in a discussion about collaboration.

visiting, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 20:53 (two years ago) link

Allegedly this was the specific Uncut quote that got under Morrissey's skin:

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 26 January 2022 22:10 (two years ago) link

“It won’t come as any surprise when I say that I’m really close with everyone I’ve worked with – except for the obvious one,” he said. “And that isn’t that much of a surprise because we’re so different, me and Morrissey.”

Which is pretty much what Morrissey himself says?

Someone left a space telescope out in the rain (Tom D.), Wednesday, 26 January 2022 22:18 (two years ago) link

"He's a racist," added Marr.

DJI, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 22:19 (two years ago) link

One thing particularly struck me in this so out of date clash : It seems pretty impossible that Morrissey NEVER said anything negative about Marr !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 22:44 (two years ago) link

his memoir is negative about Marr, specifically in relation to their legal troubles with the other two band members. he speaks very little about Marr in the memoir generally - his legal troubles with the smiths take up more pages than the entire time the smiths were a band

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 26 January 2022 22:48 (two years ago) link

A bit disappointed to see, here, that Marr has replied. It should be beneath him.

this is true but i gotta say if i was in marr's place i would find it damn near impossible not to respond with something, knowing how much it would get even further under his skin. its just too perfect.

I have no recollection of that combo. Rourke and Hook are two of my favorite bassists, though.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 26 January 2022 23:50 (two years ago) link

The font used in that open letter and the rest of his website should never be used for text. So annoying to read. Especially the g and y, which stick out like sore thumbs. Isn't Morrissey supposed to be some sort of aesthete? Find a font that isn't torture to read.

yeah, it's like ... do they not know?

I always brace myself for the worst every time this thread gets bumped. It doesn't sound like there have been any recent developments, but now I'm wondering how bad it can get?

birdistheword, Thursday, 7 July 2022 14:49 (one year ago) link

Maybe a Trumpian turn of announcing his candidacy? A call to his devoted fans to join a new far right party?

birdistheword, Thursday, 7 July 2022 14:52 (one year ago) link

Calling mourners after the Manchester bombing "morons" for singing an Oasis tune?

No matter what you think of the polarizing lyrics in “Bonfire of Teenagers,” there’s one thing we can all agree on: Morrissey will always say what’s on his mind, for better or for worse.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 July 2022 15:02 (one year ago) link

I guess what will naturally happen (or perhaps already has) is that I just maintain the same appreciation for '80s and '90s Morrissey while doing my best to ignore latter day Morrissey. It actually brings to mind Dennis Miller, a guy who I surprisingly like a lot when I caught reruns of '80s and early '90s episodes of Saturday Night Live. In both cases though, people argue that the signs were always there, and yet it's still hard to reconcile the work they did then versus what they continuously spout now.

birdistheword, Thursday, 7 July 2022 15:09 (one year ago) link

take it you haven't read this (from 1986) interview up the thead then?

The only smiths that ever mattered is the uk snack brand known for producing scampi fries sito

i prefer their earlier releases - ie Salt & Shake crisps.

So, he's written an answer song to "Don't look back in Anger"

It's called "Songs that saved someone elses life" oh wait..

salt n shake went downhill when they signed to Walkers.

stirmonster, Thursday, 7 July 2022 16:25 (one year ago) link

In light of the above posts, it also saddens me that the only creative name Americans have ever come up with for chips and fries during the past 20 years is "freedom fries."

birdistheword, Thursday, 7 July 2022 17:03 (one year ago) link

look, when new jersey came up with the name "disco fries" for poutine, america officially peaked

True enough. Trump supporters often praise their hero for speaking his mind. To which my reply is, Speaking your mind is not a virtue when your mind is a dumpster fire.

So dumb seeing this presented as a Moz-vs.-Oasis beef.

deep luminous trombone (Eazy), Thursday, 7 July 2022 19:06 (one year ago) link

This guy was ordering his band to write letters to his record company, trying to get them to release "Throwing My Arms Around Paris" in the wake of the Paris terror attacks in 2015 because it might give him a number one. So doesn't seem unlikely that he's motivated by envy and frustration that the mourners weren't singing one of his songs.

Piedie Gimbel, Thursday, 7 July 2022 20:15 (one year ago) link

Morrisey is a oacist

m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Thursday, 7 July 2022 21:11 (one year ago) link

The frustration in the song is about having the British anthem after a terrorist attack be "don't be angry."
