Morrissey is a racist

damn that interview is terrible, i've seen those quote on their own before here and there but not the actual piece. people usually say "well they were taken out of context" but in this case i think they are even worse in context

"Well, he likes a great Martha and the Vandellas song" is all the praise I can muster.

My favorite thing about the interview is that the interviewer a couple of times is like "are you sure you don't want to take this less-racist lifeline I'm trying to throw you" and Morrissey is all "NOPE"

Most indie-pop purists of that era got over that kind of hardline rejection of chart pop via the dance music of the late 80s or dare I say the Britpop scene a couple of years later. But Morrisey's music taste seems stuck in the same place forever. I walked past a venue where he was playing a couple of years ago and they were actually selling T-Rex and New York Dolls vinyl at the merchandise stall.

Morrissey's 'letter' seems to me the single worst thing he's ever done.

A bit disappointed to see, here, that Marr has replied. It should be beneath him. He's always been better at serenity.

As most of the commentary I've seen today has been along the lines of "When I interviewed Marr he was very reluctant to discuss Morrissey."

Marr is promoting a new solo album, Fever Dreams Pts 1-4. His offending remarks appear to come from the March 2022 issue of Uncut magazine, in which he mentions Morrissey in a discussion about collaboration.

Allegedly this was the specific Uncut quote that got under Morrissey's skin:

Which is pretty much what Morrissey himself says?

One thing particularly struck me in this so out of date clash : It seems pretty impossible that Morrissey NEVER said anything negative about Marr !

his memoir is negative about Marr, specifically in relation to their legal troubles with the other two band members. he speaks very little about Marr in the memoir generally - his legal troubles with the smiths take up more pages than the entire time the smiths were a band

this is true but i gotta say if i was in marr's place i would find it damn near impossible not to respond with something, knowing how much it would get even further under his skin. its just too perfect.

The font used in that open letter and the rest of his website should never be used for text. So annoying to read. Especially the g and y, which stick out like sore thumbs. Isn't Morrissey supposed to be some sort of aesthete? Find a font that isn't torture to read.

No matter what you think of the polarizing lyrics in “Bonfire of Teenagers,” there’s one thing we can all agree on: Morrissey will always say what’s on his mind, for better or for worse.

I guess what will naturally happen (or perhaps already has) is that I just maintain the same appreciation for '80s and '90s Morrissey while doing my best to ignore latter day Morrissey. It actually brings to mind Dennis Miller, a guy who I surprisingly like a lot when I caught reruns of '80s and early '90s episodes of Saturday Night Live. In both cases though, people argue that the signs were always there, and yet it's still hard to reconcile the work they did then versus what they continuously spout now.
