Top verse? Fierce competition but I’m calling it for Black Thought. It’s just incendiary, in the best possible way.

Random old rap you are loving finding around the house on ancient cassettes: New Orleans "brass-hop" band Coolbone. Corny, but I liked this back in the day. Posting mostly to see if anyone can identify the flute/strings sample at :39 seconds.

Skee-Lo — I thought he was good! Very much a cornball, but he was unique. I really liked "Top of the Stairs"; another great riff on Patrice Rushen's "Remind Me" (one of those samples that I don't mind hearing in multiple uses).
Scarface — "Mary Jane" (1997)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fz42nWqBKwQ
This beat is heavenly. Always assumed it was a sample, but I can't find the source if so. Who Sampled doesn't have any info on that front, but apparently it was recycled a few times throughout the 2000s. Amazing stuff.

been listening to this album again, realising it just about 20years old, where does the time go, eh. An unsung classic out of the vibrant rap/poetry/spoken word world of L.A. in the late nineties/early 2000's. Flow, check, beats, check, passion and heart and no love for the game, check.Aceyalone - Love and Hate

About a year ago a local radio station changed format and is now basically Gen-X / older Millenial era hip-hop/soul/funk/r&b. Nothing they play is really obscure in any way but in the past month I've heard "Posse on Broadway", "The Choice Is Yours", "I Wish", "Fantastic Voyage", "Tennessee", "Return of the Mack", "Atomic Dogg", "Country Grammar", "The Way You Move", etc.
Now twice in the last week I've heard this and I can't tell you how excited I am to have it come on while driving my kid to the ortodontist:

Also the station confirms for me that my hating of all the Mase / Puffy shit from the late 90s is still justified and that the piano in 'Still DRE' is the most annoying thing ever.

one of the mainstream/current rap stations i sometimes listen to plays that song as one of their occasional throwbacks somewhat regularly
― dyl, Monday, 30 May 2022 15:41 (four years ago)
maybe i'm just showing my hiphop junkieness, but it's a song that never really went away ime. heck i used to dj an "underground hiphop" night in the late 90s/early 2000s and we'd throw it on when the place was packed. always a crowd pleaser.

this prompted me to relisten to lunitik muzik for the first time in well over two decades. just as solid as i remember. it got 3.5 mics from the source and i recall thinking "yeah, they got it right on this one." it's completely misogynist and gratuitous, but holy hot damn this beat:
