I played Punk quite a bit but it does not feel essential.

More than any other rap album this year, yes. It's good. Just not YT 2013-16 good.

Punk is not bad, but no way is it better than Jeffery or Beautiful Thugger Girls, which I see as the end of Young Thug's godlike run. It seems to me that the best of that era is what Punk is aspiring to repeat, and just sort of approximating.

I 100% think it is better than both of those albums, which were overrated at the time due to what he’d accomplished immediately prior

For me it has the same problem as So Much Fun (which is OK), a sort of no-beginning, no-end plateau, nothing horrible but nothing jumping out of the stereo either

there's a tastefulness to the production but if you're keyed into what he's saying rather than general 'bonkers' vibe its more rewarding imo

I'm a beats and production-first listener and being charitable most of the production is not for me

though i'm still unclear as to exactly what the definition of a rage beat is

idk the precise definition but it's the kind of sound with complex, distorted synth melodies (sometimes they're trance-y, sometimes they imitate guitars) and blown-out percussion, kind of like "die4guy" or "king vamp" on whole lotta red or the entirety of yeat's album up 2 me
