rankings CAN be fun when you're maybe about to see a band live and your excitement leads you to categorize everything, but I often get stressed out making them otherwise.

i also think those kinds of lists are really harmful and destructive.

prog house is precisely not pompous and grandiose enough, every prog house tune should have a plague of light house keepers as its minimum length with various movements and tempo changes. Instead it's just heterosexual house for indie prog haters extended and made more boring.

Agree with this. The majority of Chick Corea's catalog after the mid '70s is terrible, he was born without taste, but the classic RTF lineup was amazing.

they're giving me flashbacks to the essay section of the GRE
― Lily Dale, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 05:48 (two years ago) link
i have kind of a crazy story about that, the essay portion of the GRE
short version is that i only did one practice essay, from a practice book, within a few days of the test. the question? something about whether indoor smoking should be outlawed in public places. this was the early 2000s, of course. anyway, i did a half-assed practice test essay version of it, and then spent some time time reading the 5.0 answer that was provided.
on my actual GRE, a few days later, what was the essay? of course, the same exact question about smoking and how it should be regulated in public spaces, almost word for word. instead of treating this like the easy alley oop that it was, i freaked out. i spent 20 minutes just staring at it, wondering what to do, worried that somehow if i replicated the 5.0 answer that i had just read a few days later, it would be plagiarism of some sort. i finally started scribbling something when it was way too late and rushed through everything, yeah badumdum after that

I got something like, "Are the events of your life within your control or not? Answer in a five-paragraph essay and cite sources." (I'm not making this up, that was the question, I just don't remember exactly how it was worded.)
― Lily Dale, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 05:59 (two years ago) link
Actually they didn't tell me the five-paragraph-essay and sources part, so naturally I wrote a personal essay, which is why I failed the writing section of the GRE, didn't get into grad school, and ended up living in a shack in Alaska.

I don't really remember! I think I did a sort of light, "on the one hand/on the other hand" personal/anecdotal thing, because I really couldn't wrap my head around the idea that the GRE wanted me to take a firm stance on the issue and make my case in five paragraphs.

Yes, it's boring because it doesn't live up to its progressive rhetoric. It should be the prog rock of dance music with tempo/key/time signature changes all eventually resolving to an ultimate, grandiose 4/4 at various tempos, but instead its more like the English version of jam bands. just noodling.
Symphonic house, now there's a thought. Does it exist?

dance music with tempo/key/time signature changes does not work as dance music, because nobody can dance to it.

Objectively and historically and scientifically wrong in any case, so quit with the patronising. Although this doesn't have key changes, but that would hardly be a problem for our future progressive dance epics.

Yes, it's boring because it doesn't live up to its progressive rhetoric.
Prog house not being all that progressive yeah that's clear but then again lots of genres got their name early on and ended up somewhere completely elsewhere - IDM very quickly ended up very much not "dance music", etc. If they had called it deep groove instead or something similarly accurate, it'd still be just as boring, but few people would make this big "progressive? ha!" deal about it.
It should be the prog rock of dance music with tempo/key/time signature changes all eventually resolving to an ultimate, grandiose 4/4 at various tempos
Well there's the whole psy angle - Shpongle, Younger Brother & all. Hard to make that work in the context of a DJ set though, which is what 99% of dance music is produced for.
I'm counting four tempo changes in this one:

― Evan, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 14:52 (two years ago) link
of course it's silly, but at least it's fairly helpful for picking what club night to go to.
― Siegbran, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 14:55 (two years ago) link
IDM is at least amusing though, as you can just pretend the phonetic way a speech synthesiser pronounces it, 'ihdm', is its own, made up word.
As for dj sets, this shouldn't be an excuse but then again the dance music industry is hopelessly anachronistic — still using cdjs (got to be a CIA psyop, surely?) when you can have 4-6 deck hooligan plunderphonics meltdowns on virtual dj, why would you choose to remain hopelessly out of date? At least in the 90s using an outdated format was born out of necessity, today it's just rave grandad-ism, which is fine and all, but at least own up to it rather than the pseudo-spiritual tosh of dj sets being some kind of amazonian shamanic ritual — they are rituals alright, but for sinners, and certainly not for noble or religious purposes. Structure - We are Structure and we will blow your mind out like a fuse on 303s.
