I sprung for the Pye Corner Audio black mills tapes vinyl box a month or so ago and have been seriously “caning” it, as they say.

Thanks to tyler for tweeting about this record, holy hell. I love it. The cover art drew me in, but the music smokes too.

First Pogues lp I could find after reading the James fearnley memoir. I think I have at least a couple of others. I picked up a few in HMV sales a few years ago after missing them live for the most part. I think it is interesting material especially in the light of reading the fearnley book. I was left wondering if people picked up on anything from the band apart from the obvious Irish folk tropes. Like the semi ramshackle stripped down quality or anything . Would be interested to hear unusual sources citing them as an influence.
Do enjoy this stuff in places. Also wonder to what extent Shane Macgowan would have been able to sing if he had looked after himself.
Some very moving music anyway.

THis was disc 22 of the 3cd version of the set. I think I have damaged a couple of discs from this from not looking after it,. So wound up taking this off midweek cos it was sticking.
Otherwise great trippy stuff from the same run that gave birth to a great deal of their original live release Live Dead. I haven't checked if the Dark Star here is the same version as on that I think it's pretty close. This has the full sequence including a longer Eleven than is on Live Dead. Very good one too.
Pretty great around this point, haven't really picked up on the country tropes they indulge in towards the end of the year yet. So still notably psychedelic.

took it off and relaced it with

which is various Beatles covers from various sources a lot previously released and covering quite a lot of genres from different times.

Very good compi of the Latin Soul Brother's 70s work. I was just reading about him being the actual bad boy of teh latin scene since he had actually spent time in jail and stuff.
Bought this in the early 00ies and it gets a little neglected. Shouldn't be cos it is pretty great. Should definitely add to it. May well get taht Fania box set that just came out .

Quite digging this thing by Folly Group. Sort of an Arab Strap–Gang of Four–Sleaford Mods thing going on, but I’ve never heard anything quite like it.

Icelandic post-rock band that I saw playing a gig soundtracking a silent film of Fantomas at the local University a couple of years back.
I picked this cd up from them there and haven't listened to it in a while. It moves between semi ambient stuff to more upbeat classical stuff. I think it's pretty good. Should try to remember it more frequently. Noice.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/fa0af0914420925876904cf7a8d350aa/6427072
2nd disc of the 2nd singles compilation which was initially a mistake cos I hadn't checked the dates of recordings so wound up with more late 50s stuff when I was looking for electric. Think i will move over to the 3rd disc next and that is the late 60s onwards one.
Quite happy after listening to the disc I've chosen though has some cool stuff on. I'm really taken with that song I think is called the Sun One about the man from the sun. Would love to hear a rock band cover that so is there a recording of that out there?
Again a set that I should probably play more frequently and definitely not ignore the earlier stuff cos I so love the electric eras.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/bc71f2e990e433799dcbd40a6501578f/1689911
I think this is my cut off point for the band. Still pretty rocking and maybe I'm wrong about later stuff but this was one I was around for being current.
Has me wondering what the bands they were lifting from were. They were a pair of business students whgo left texas for LA where they sold thinjgs on teh beach and hung out with Bruce Licher of Savage Rep[ublic or knew him or something along those lines. They went home to Texas and formed a raucous punk band who had warped take on hardcore but far more expansive. By the point of this record they had shown some influences from bands like Black Sabbath by putting out warped covers of their material though slightly retitled. Crossed hip hop with country influences and a few other things. Shown their love for audiences by introducing them to the brown note and some very interesting backdrops of films etc. I had never seen a penis reconstruction surgery until I was at The ULU as far as I can remember. Wonder how many fans rushed out to be medical students, what philanthropic chappies.
But I think I am hearing at least semi lifts from early 70s hard rock and psych and stuff combined with warped punk and stuff just wish I knew more as to what came from where. Must read the band biography, think I may have been saying that for a few years. have read the Forcedexposure one anyway

Stevolende, Friday, 15 October 2021 14:38 (two years ago) link

yeah enjoyed that. Think I need to finish the book it came with.
Electric 3rd Ear band were really groovy . I think there's other stuff by that line up that came with the Elements set reissue of the s/t one.

xposts: the dragon wakes stuff is good, though did strike me that it has a slightly demo-ish feel to it & there were a couple of tracks where it just sounded like a generic rock band with the 3eb doing their thing over the top of it without its really melding (based on a first listen, anyway). gonna need to get that expanded elements reissue to complete the puzzle!

or at least disc 2 of this

Not sure how much I've listened to this in the past. I did get a stand alone version of Marble Index much earlier. Both of them get greatly expanded in this set I think. & it was this one that Throbbing Gristle decided to cover.
I think this has more input or more control from John Cale than the previous lp did.
May be even darker and desolate than the previous lp. Quite atmospheric anyway.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/fa0af0914420925876904cf7a8d350aa/6427072
3rd disc of the singles set. This is the one that covers later era from late 60s through to the 80s.
So has a bit more electric stuff on . Do love his loose grooves, but I think he was doing that earlier too just not quite as funky possibly .
THink I do need to go back and investigate his earlier periods too but absolute peak for me is late 70s/early 80s deep space funk . Anyway there is so much of his work that there are absolute worlds left to discover. So cool, innit. Great to have compilations like thsi and the 2 anthologies that came out a few years ago but i think they can probably only ever be tasters. Must be something to know your way around this ouevre and still have space for other artists to anything like the same level . Do you wind up as a Ra head listening to little outside of his work like teh Grateful Dead Heads were supposed to if you don't watch out. Difficult to give all of his work an even hearing I would think anyway.

Akron Ohio pre punk underground artists. Get pretty noisy in places and proggy in others, poppy in yet others.
THis is a compilation of material from before they got a major label deal so dating from 74 to 79.
I think sound is a bit muddy and murky in places seemed to be a bit quiter than the other discs I had on the 3 player but it does rewarda listen.
