Apparently Mastodon are piecing together the cover for a new album on various social media accounts, Twitter is the only one I'm on at the moment so I can just see the piece they posted there. Assuming the full announcement will be out shortly.

is this like Zaireeka where you have to open four social media sites at once to see the cover
― Duke Detain (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 7 September 2021 16:31 (three years ago) link
Apparently? Twitter says Facebook has another piece and mailing list members got an email with a third piece. Instagram has another piece that reveals a portion of the album title to be Hushed and.

NJ dissonant death metal band Replicant's second album, Malignant Reality, is out today. RIYL Ulcerate, other doomy/creepy-crawly DM bands with prominent avant/prog elements.

really dig the new mastodon single, encouraged by the album length

Agreed on both counts, it's good and I like the idea of an 88-minute double album from them.

Just watched the video. Knew nothing about the album but I'm in. Prog Mastodon > catchy radio-rock Mastodon.

Haven't listened to Mastodon in ages, but on cursory first listen that sounds a bit like ... Prong? But then, I haven't listened to Prong in ages, either! (I should really check in with both again soon.)

I tried and tried with the new Portrait, but although they push all the buttons that gets an old school nerd like me salivating, the album just comes up empty. They still have yet to top Crimen Laesae Majestatis Divinae.
I haven't heard Crimen, but I do like the new one even more than Burn the World, just scratching a really nice old school heavy metal itch for me.

that new Replicant is good as hell and they apparently hail from like 10 minutes away from where I live now, which might come in handy if shows are ever normal again.
Also been digging the new Wharflurch (psych-ish doomy death) and Sarcoughagus (typically gross Maggot Stomp stuff) releases, too.

I did an email interview with the Replicant bassist/vocalist and told him that there's a sticker from his early 2000s band still on a lamppost about two blocks from my apartment. (He grew up in the town where I live.)

They're surprisingly similar in many ways, but after listening to one song from each, the new/upcoming Tremonti album is heavier than the new/upcoming Khemmis album.

holy fuck this Concrete Winds
https://concretewinds.bandcamp.com/album/primitive-force
― you had me at "giallo" (Neanderthal), Thursday, 16 September 2021 21:42 (three years ago) link
speaking of, this made me laugh ... all of it, and then the juxtaposition of the final line:
We are proud to announce...
After `Primitive Force´ from 2019, Concrete Winds will deliver their 2nd full length album fittingly entitled `Nerve Butcherer´ on november 26, 2021.
The content is hard to believe yet even harder to describe as words might simply fail regarding this vile eruption of utmost hatred. The record precisely continues where its predecessor left the listener shocked and terrified.
Repulsion on 78rpm, Morbid Angel hunting in bloodlust, Terrorizer infected with rabies or Funeral Mist`s most dreadful moments may be even understatements for this (surely) god-damned cacophony.
Concrete Winds don`t want to please anybody, nor want they to be accepted.
Their intent is to spread disgust and confusion, their tongue is that of perversion, abhorrence and wrath.
Ever witnessed a biblical plague of locusts?
Well, dare to listen to `Nerve Butcherer´ and you might find the sonic equivalent.
Slaughterhouse atmosphere and total destruction meets even nastier moments to bang your head.
Some folks might say it can`t get more terrible after `Primitive Force´, but watch out for `Nerve Butcherer´…as this is truly damn fucking mentally disordered!!!
Song premiere and further infos about preorders follow.

Oh my God, I had no idea. At first I thought you meant to type Reinert but I just checked and confirmed that Malone is gone, too. Amazing musician and those Gordian Knot records are really overlooked and great. Fuck.
Excited for a new Cynic album, though.

some recent bandcamp finds -
quick hit of death/doom, I'd be happy with a whole album stretching out those keyboard intro/outros tbh:https://oothecaslc.bandcamp.com/album/excretions-of-lore
raw, tremelo-heavy black metal, you know what this sounds like already but there are actually some songs to be found here:https://blutumhang.bandcamp.com/album/the-fires-of-domination
murky, grooving finnish death metal, nails the atmosphere at least:https://spellblood.bandcamp.com/album/spellblood-demo
more finns, pretty much right at the death/black midpoint but the whole record just keeps coming at you like a punk bulldozer or something, def my top pick out of all of these:https://fallentemple.bandcamp.com/album/ikuinen-kamppailu
uh, still need to listen to the new skepticism, carcass, and maiden records tho! as always, I guess I just like procrastinating with fun low-stakes stuff...

xxpost Does Patrick Walker actually agree with Warning being doom metal? I'm on the fence. Yes, in a way it's the quintessential doom metal album, but it's also just this type of slow post-rock song played with doom guitar pedals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix2fKq88kR4 (IMHO, nothing about this is doom metal but they still only get reviewed in metal publications, just because of that earlier band he was in)

Yeahhh it is, I feel like they're expanding their sound a bit but it's still crushing.
New Succumb is really good too, but only if you like riffs flying at your face for 34 and a half minutes.

K.K.'s Priest album is fun so far, but not as good as JP's Firepower (at least what i've heard so far). KK's personality comes across more in lengthy instrumental breaks rather than the shell of the song itself.
vocalist is Ripper Owens, lol, so for all intents in purposes I guess this is a second Judas Priest. he sounds good here though because for once he's not actively trying to sing like a predecessor like he had to in JP and Iced Earth. his falsetto is still really powerful.

I am only a few songs into the Body/Big|Brave collab.
Sounds like Godspeed You! Black Emperor meets Jaye Jayle with a female vocalist (haven't heard any Chip King screeches yet).
Loving it!
