I'm sure this next generation is finally the one where racism and homophobia will just magically disappear

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 2 August 2021 13:45 (three years ago) link

It's fair to say their prevalence is much lower among younger people, nay?

pomenitul, Monday, 2 August 2021 13:48 (three years ago) link

sure but not to where you'd be shocked to find it existing, i mean look at the demographics of the alt-right, etc.

Not so much shocked as doubly disappointed tbh.

It's definitely the age to be part of the generation that should and mostly does know better.

boxedjoy, Monday, 2 August 2021 16:34 (three years ago) link

Maybe? 29 year old seems a bit too old to be part of that generation but too young to be part of the generation that doesn't know better.

Soundtracked by an ecojazz mixtape (Tom D.), Monday, 2 August 2021 17:14 (three years ago) link

kinda thought that the nature of irrational phobias and hatred was based on ignorance, willful or otherwise, so determining this generation or that "knows better" seems an arbitrary label

He got in trouble for saying shit about AIDS, right? If anything he seems way too young for that, AIDS jokes seem like a relic of the Andrew Dice Clay and Sebastian Bach era. That's practically retro-ignorance.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 2 August 2021 17:28 (three years ago) link

you have to have your head in the sand pretty deeply to not understand that there is a sizable reactionary culture against the idea that it is wrong and/or punishable to be sexist, homophobic etc and that said culture crosses over heavily w/ rap music culture

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 August 2021 17:30 (three years ago) link

xp: the DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince era!

All the ugly people be quiet
All the filthy, stinky, nasty people be quiet
All the homeboys that got aids be quiet
All the girls out there that don't like guys, be quiet
Hold on, wait a minute
All the girls that don't like guys be quiet
You know it
Cause see, what we like to do is we perform, right?
We like to see how much noise the people can make, right?

Yeah, that did strike me as being anachronistic.

hold on, you mean to tell me some guy on ilx is pretty removed from mainstream culture even as he makes pronouncements about it? xxp

the jokes about AIDS at rolling loud were were clearly in the vein of old school rap showmanship of playfully insulting ppl in the crowd as peace, man cites. the issue isn't that he did that, it's that he quadrupled down on the homophobia w/ defensive non-apologies after the fact. if he had just come out and said "yeah i said something stupid, my bad, i understand why i was wrong and i won't do it again" he would've been forgiven

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 August 2021 17:43 (three years ago) link

he also brought out Torey Lanez, which is possibly the more unforgiveable move to a lot of his audience

i think most of his audience either didn't care or thought it was great

Sorry, but this is very wrong. The shit he said on stage was also indefensible, gtfo with this excusing it.

Percentage-wise, how many mainstream rappers of DaBaby's generation still dabble in casual homophobia vs mainstream rappers of pretty much every previous generation?

Q: Percentage-wise, how many mainstream rappers of DaBaby's generation still dabble in casual homophobia vs mainstream rappers of pretty much every previous generation?

BD: How many?

Q: Yes. Are there many who…

BD: Yeah. I think there’s about 136.

Q: You say, “about 136”?

BD: Yeah.

Q: Or do you mean exactly 136?

BD: It’s either 136 or 142.

forks i think the idea that a lot of dababy's fanbase is pro megan thee stallion and anti tory lanez or more broadly pro feminist and anti cancel cultural provocation is not borne out by being fans of dababy

There's like four decades of hypocrisy w/r/t rappers saying nasty things and it's pretty much arbitrary who or what gets in the crosshairs. Lolla and Gov Ball both made big deals about DaBaby being pulled from their lineup, but don't seem to care abt Young Thug, who tweeted transphobic shit at a 12 year old

Also, J0rdan otm

my Least Favorite Writer (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 2 August 2021 18:42 (three years ago) link

Yeah, the hypocrisy and unequal reactions is shit, but specifically wrt to DaBaby, I can't help but wonder if there is something in the Lolla/Gov Ball contracts that gives them cover to pull him for something that happened on stage that might not hold up when trying to pull another artist for years old tweets.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 2 August 2021 18:50 (three years ago) link

it's really a question of money. i don't think festivals or any venue have a legal obligation to grant an artist a stage even if they've been booked so if lolla or whoever is paying dababy his full fee to go away there's prob not much of a legal discussion to be had. but if they're trying to withhold or pull back money from him then yeah. would be curious to read an article about it

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 August 2021 19:12 (three years ago) link

i think the idea that a lot of dababy's fanbase is pro megan thee stallion and anti tory lanez or more broadly pro feminist and anti cancel cultural provocation is not borne out by being fans of dababy

daresay it's a lot simpler than that: dababy is a mainstream, popular rapper and so is Megan so there's a LOT of crossover in fanbase there and that crossover audience does NOT like lanez.

As soon as you approach "crossover" status, you are firmly in the world where no one gives a shit about abusers

old white guys talking about our world of young people and all but it should be noted that my 74 year old mother called and asked me if i liked da baby so this discourse has clearly made its way to The View levels of conversation.

not really surprised that young thug making a single transphobic tweet over a year ago didn't cause as much controversy as dababy being homophobic at a concert & then quadrupling down on it with worse comments to try to defend himself. as j0rdan said, dababy would probably have gotten away with it if he'd just apologised the day after instead of digging a much bigger hole for himself.

if young thug had doubled down on his transphobic tweet then & gone on a huge tirade or something it might have been a bigger deal but it was little enough that the public didn't care for too long, and it's not like people really care that much about transphobia as is anyway

ufo, Monday, 2 August 2021 19:24 (three years ago) link

dababy refused to do a story with drew millard after he said 'hail satan' so that might give you some idea of the roots of his ethical/moral worldview

i don't think your feel for the situation is correct but it's not really worth arguing about any further. that mash up is really good tho
