Do metal fans ever feel that there is too much metal, too many bands? It seems to an outsider like me that the genre is over-saturated even in 21st century terms (cheaper recording, digital distribution etc.).
― Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 16:49 (four years ago)
certain genres of metal, absolutely yes
― imago, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 16:56 (four years ago)
my fellow metalheads will disagree with me on what genres these are though
i appreciate austin's controversial opinion. i mean, they knew that was going to be controversial, and just went for it.

I almost feel this way about every genre. I've given up even trying to keep up.
― Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 17:06 (four years ago)
there are too many bands and musicians in general! i really do believe that. it's not anyone's fault. there are just too many
― Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 17:07 (four years ago)
is that controversial? haha, hold on
― Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 17:08 (four years ago)

Yeah, this is hardly specific to metal.
― pomenitul, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 17:11 (four years ago)
nah i'm glad that there are infinite bands and musicians. imagine if we were to run out?
― bezos did the dub (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 17:12 (four years ago)

I love that the metal underground is so huge. It's one of the best things going.
― jmm, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 17:27 (four years ago)
i mean, i am joking. you guys know that, right?
i don't want to hear metal, but i really don't have anything against it. drummers can play, that's for sure!
just posted in here because i was driving yesterday listening to james brown (semi-loud with windows down) and after pulling up next to me, this guy kept driving right alongside me at the same speed blasting some stupid metal. like yeah, okay you don't like james brown or you think your music is better or whatever. leave me out of it.
also you're a wonderful person, neanderthal. don't change. unless that was you trying to have a mobile sound system battle. don't do that.
― things repeat forever and there never is a remedy (Austin), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 17:34 (four years ago)
lol i don't think my stereo would survive such a battle. *factory equipment 4 life*
― making splashes at Dan Flashes (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:03 (four years ago)
i used to live for windows-down stereo battles where i would blast whitehouse ('wrggle like a fucking eel', what's cooler than that????)
now that i'm old i will roll up my windows if there is even a chance of passive-aggressive interaction with another vehicle.

Here's a controversial music opinion: labeling any genre as "fucking garbage" is as prejudiced as saying any cultural or ethnic group is "fucking garbage". There's garbage in every genre, yet none of them deserve that label.

Feel like I get that vibe from pop fans that declare superiority over "lol indie".
However I have no examples just vague memories of comments here on ilx over the years.
Actually, what did that even mean? Maybe I just guessed.
― Evan, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:26 (four years ago)
all genres matter

Randy Newman is a musical garbage machine.

― making splashes at Dan Flashes (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:36 (four years ago)
While it might be correct on some level to call it prejudiced, I would defend use of hyperbole to vent strong opinions on a music forum without fear of it being compared to ethnic slurs. I would even go further and defend dismissing certain cultures as "fucking garbage" without that being compared to doing the same for an ethnic group. Difference in my mind being that a culture is something a person chooses to be a part of.
― beard papa, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:38 (four years ago)
xposts Although he was the musical inspiration for that time my brother came to town and we spent the whole weekend inventing songs for my imaginary Newman Sings Newman album (where every tune is from the perspective of Jerry Seinfeld's nemesis). Pretty sure we nearly made a friend of mine pee his pants. Good times.
Otherwise: musical garbage machine.
― Marty J. Bilge (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:40 (four years ago)
Except there's a strong history of those genres that are commonly targeted and specifically dismissed wholesale as being ones started by and intended for historically marginalized groups - disco, rap, jazz being three prime contenders. It's pretty hard to extract that history when someone dismisses the entirety of a genre as "fucking garbage".

you know what's fucking garbage? this thread :)
― rob, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:44 (four years ago)
Does that fully count as a 'music opinion', though?
― pomenitul, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:45 (four years ago)
no sadly, it's more of an "i love music opinion"
― rob, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:46 (four years ago)

i believe geir hongro wrote a dissertation on this, spread out across many posts
― Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:58 (four years ago)
Pretty sure Geir was hot for harmony.
― Wouldn't disgrace a Michael Jackson (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:59 (four years ago)
but let's not forget melody. melody too. both very important in music

Not saying you're necessarily doing this, but this argument is used to support some really nasty stuff. (Unless you're talking about "toxic gaming culture" or something like that.)
― ghost runner on first (morrisp), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:08 (four years ago)
It was back during Rousseau's time (he legit argued melody is superior to harmony in hopes of pwning Rameau).
― pomenitul, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:08 (four years ago)
I just don’t really get the idea of qualitatively comparing them. playing notes one at a time is better than playing notes simultaneously? Uh ok
