Post a controversial music opinion

Do metal fans ever feel that there is too much metal, too many bands? It seems to an outsider like me that the genre is over-saturated even in 21st century terms (cheaper recording, digital distribution etc.).

certain genres of metal, absolutely yes

my fellow metalheads will disagree with me on what genres these are though

i appreciate austin's controversial opinion. i mean, they knew that was going to be controversial, and just went for it.

I love that the metal underground is so huge. It's one of the best things going.

i don't want to hear metal, but i really don't have anything against it. drummers can play, that's for sure!

just posted in here because i was driving yesterday listening to james brown (semi-loud with windows down) and after pulling up next to me, this guy kept driving right alongside me at the same speed blasting some stupid metal. like yeah, okay you don't like james brown or you think your music is better or whatever. leave me out of it.

also you're a wonderful person, neanderthal. don't change. unless that was you trying to have a mobile sound system battle. don't do that.

i used to live for windows-down stereo battles where i would blast whitehouse ('wrggle like a fucking eel', what's cooler than that????)

now that i'm old i will roll up my windows if there is even a chance of passive-aggressive interaction with another vehicle.

Here's a controversial music opinion: labeling any genre as "fucking garbage" is as prejudiced as saying any cultural or ethnic group is "fucking garbage". There's garbage in every genre, yet none of them deserve that label.

Here's a controversial music opinion: labeling any genre as "fucking garbage" is as prejudiced as saying any cultural or ethnic group is "fucking garbage". There's garbage in every genre, yet none of them deserve that label.

While it might be correct on some level to call it prejudiced, I would defend use of hyperbole to vent strong opinions on a music forum without fear of it being compared to ethnic slurs. I would even go further and defend dismissing certain cultures as "fucking garbage" without that being compared to doing the same for an ethnic group. Difference in my mind being that a culture is something a person chooses to be a part of.

Except there's a strong history of those genres that are commonly targeted and specifically dismissed wholesale as being ones started by and intended for historically marginalized groups - disco, rap, jazz being three prime contenders. It's pretty hard to extract that history when someone dismisses the entirety of a genre as "fucking garbage".

Not saying you're necessarily doing this, but this argument is used to support some really nasty stuff. (Unless you're talking about "toxic gaming culture" or something like that.)

I just don’t really get the idea of qualitatively comparing them. playing notes one at a time is better than playing notes simultaneously? Uh ok
