Man, we should get on Linked In and invite her to the thread.

Maresn3st, Friday, 23 July 2021 14:47 (four years ago)

Otherwise, she'd just be doing early Pavement.

Not saying I like it (although I didn't like Pavement either for a long time).xps

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Friday, 23 July 2021 14:49 (four years ago)

is she Jandek's daughter?

It's almost as if she's never heard singing before until someone described the act of singing to her and she decided to take a stab at it based upon that description.

Marty J. Bilge (Old Lunch), Friday, 23 July 2021 16:38 (four years ago)

If this wasn't produced/presented the way it was, I think the response would be less bafflement and more praise. The YT algorithm showed me Wuthering Heights immediately afterword, and I think the algorithm is on to something.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 23 July 2021 16:44 (four years ago)

Obviously Kate Bush is a much better singer! Just to be clear

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 23 July 2021 16:45 (four years ago)

this is certainly a way to stand out amongst other youtube folksingers

seems like she knows what shes doing, and it isn't a parody

Her Covid song is a bit more standard, but when she sings an off note she makes a puzzled face, as if to say, "Isn't this quirky?"

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 23 July 2021 16:49 (four years ago)

She's playing standard chords on her guitar, so she's not quite some unschooled savant.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 23 July 2021 16:51 (four years ago)

this is a girl who can't sing in tune, it's not the second coming of the shaggs.

xxxpost maybe she just farted

Let's make this happen

Marty J. Bilge (Old Lunch), Friday, 23 July 2021 17:05 (four years ago)

Ahah this is great. I couldn’t help laughing in public while listening to it like a maniac.
What’s the link to R. Black though ?

Eh, matching pitch is a skill that has to be learned for most people, myself certainly included. I've heard plenty of people who sound pretty similar to this in studios or schools.

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Friday, 23 July 2021 22:25 (four years ago)

The live Taylor cover def feels/sounds to me like a sort of trolling (as artistic strategy).

Max Ice (morrisp), Friday, 23 July 2021 23:00 (four years ago)

I usually understand "trolling" to mean that someone's main goal is to provoke and antagonize. I don't see that, based on the audience's reaction; if she was trolling them, she wasn't very successful.

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Saturday, 24 July 2021 14:17 (four years ago)

The more recent comments on the video do show negative reactions but the comments from when she first posted it don't.

Yeah, that was my first impression: like an alien or someone living in a rainforest heard Taylor Swift and tried doing it herself.

Also reminiscent of:

still curious about the Rebecca Black connection. is it cos this person has gone viral with a terrible song?

making splashes at Dan Flashes (Neanderthal), Saturday, 24 July 2021 17:39 (four years ago)

it's the only reason I can see tbh -- in addition to them both being female.

sarahell, Saturday, 24 July 2021 18:09 (four years ago)

This is nothing like Rebecca Black imo.

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Saturday, 24 July 2021 18:09 (four years ago)

imago, Saturday, 24 July 2021 18:12 (four years ago)

As for 'terrible', I found it quite compelling

imago, Saturday, 24 July 2021 18:12 (four years ago)

because you thought she was hot?

sarahell, Saturday, 24 July 2021 18:13 (four years ago)

honestly, if I was more industrious, I would try adding a shit-ton of reverb to her voice to see if it could be palatable to gothwave cru

Really niche of you to incorporate such strong Ives-ian influences in your composition. Who knew bi-tonality, microtones and “pop” could go so well together?!

I think I'm coming around to classic.

Imo we're all sleeping on her other video, the fully fleshed version of 'Fantasy':

pomenitul, Saturday, 24 July 2021 20:57 (four years ago)

Wow, that's actually kind of cool. I mean, I want there to be more going on in the music but the dissonances are amazing at times, esp the crunchy layered vocal harmonies.

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Saturday, 24 July 2021 21:05 (four years ago)

She makes me think a bit of Danielson Famile.

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Saturday, 24 July 2021 21:06 (four years ago)

Maybe Adorno is her sociological role model?

pomenitul, Saturday, 24 July 2021 21:07 (four years ago)

Tbc, I have been exposed to one Danielson Famile album many years ago.

reminds me much more of a maybe-accidental, maybe-avant-garde vibe of Farah Abraham much more than Rebecca Black

i'm getting a slight whiff of "Space Oddity" in there

I subscribed to her Vevo; she only has a few hundred subscribers. (How does an aspiring artist get a Vevo acct, can anyone do it?)

Also reminds me of this, which I think I found out about bc of a rushomancy post: http://musicweird.blogspot.com/2018/05/sick-sound-craze-for-amateur-girl.html

If the Rebecca Black connection question is directed at me, there's none.

I just thought here was the best place to put it *shrugs*

Maresn3st, Sunday, 25 July 2021 12:09 (four years ago)

A lot of people outside of these walls are making a Rebecca Black connection, whether justified or not.
