holy fuck this fossilization album really is all that, hails pomenitul

also, you can get truly excellent, often mint tape players on eBay, it's a buyer's market. if you were feeling completely bonkers you could get a two-owner nakamichi dragon (generally considered the highest point of technical excellence that tape decks ever reached) for 1500 which is a steal.

Nice.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 19:38 (four years ago)

boringly literal album covers thread to thread

not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 19:39 (four years ago)

PR quote of the day: "Dawn Of A Dark Age is the main project of the multi-instrumentalist Vittorio Sabelli, a classical and jazz musician who gave to the clarinet a leading role for the first time in black metal." OH GOOD.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 22:06 (four years ago)

Nice.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 22:07 (four years ago)

The Defacement album is pretty good in a Portal-ish amorphous roaring-with-ambient-interludes sort of way.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 22:10 (four years ago)

yo you're clowning but black metal with a clarinet sounds rad

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 23:48 (four years ago)

ok I"m listening to Dawn of a Dark Age's 2020 album and it's fantastic

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 23:55 (four years ago)

Yeah, that got me to go look up Dawn of a Dark Age, too. Nice.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 7 July 2021 00:14 (four years ago)

If you're interested in a sampler of mostly obscure black metal, sadly almost all of it not involving clarinets, here's one I just made: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3lbWHmuy1TU9wAh1yFYZb1?si=3695e91ca7954032

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 7 July 2021 00:33 (four years ago)

Promise you haven't sneaked in some goth metal there, Glenn?

Pfunkboy AKA (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 7 July 2021 11:20 (four years ago)

The line between black and goth is drawn by an unsteady hand. In blud.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 7 July 2021 13:30 (four years ago)

If the prospect of Zeuhl inspired by Brazilian modernist literature and steeped in sludge sounds appealing to you – and it should! – then may I suggest checking out Papangu's Holoceno?

On the more Cratylian end of metal, Sewer Fiend's EP Echoes from the Cistern is exactly what you think it is, and it's the shiznit (even more so than the Fossilization imo):

New Spirit Adrift EP (three songs) in August! The title track, "Forge Your Future," is out now. Closer to their earlier, doomier stuff than the epic power metal anthems on the last album IMO, but I'm into it.

Should we start taking bets on the next full-length album title?

Guided by Glory is my call.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 9 July 2021 13:47 (four years ago)

Cool, I'm always up for more Spirit Adrift.

One more, for the tech death-inclined:

Ok I lied – two more because I can't believe no one's talking about the new Drawn and Quartered, which pwns:

pomenitul, Friday, 9 July 2021 14:30 (four years ago)

i only just got into them recently (their older stuff). i'll check it out

not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Friday, 9 July 2021 14:39 (four years ago)

thrilled to see Abigor's Nachthymnen got reissued this year apparently, back in June.

not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Friday, 9 July 2021 14:39 (four years ago)

Attila sings a la how he does on "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" on the opening track of the new Mayhem, it's kind of LOL.

not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Friday, 9 July 2021 14:53 (four years ago)

It's a solid little EP, packed with all punk rawk covers in the second half (Discharge, Dead Kennedys, Rudimentary Peni, Ramones), but I don't think I'll be revisiting it very often.

pomenitul, Friday, 9 July 2021 14:58 (four years ago)

they’re back baby

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Saturday, 10 July 2021 01:38 (four years ago)

I was gonna order the Mayhem EP that just was released but for some reason Century media is asking $18 for a seven-song EP with only one new song and four punk covers that combined take up less than eight minutes. So fuck that.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Sunday, 11 July 2021 12:19 (four years ago)

(Please note I am referring to a Digipack CD, not vinyl!)

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Sunday, 11 July 2021 13:29 (four years ago)

Is that including shipping, at least? Insane either way.

but also fuck you (unperson), Sunday, 11 July 2021 13:47 (four years ago)

It is not including shipping at the Century Media site. It does come with free shipping through Amazon at the same price assuming you have Prime or tack on enough stuff for free shipping from them.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Sunday, 11 July 2021 15:32 (four years ago)

For shits and giggles I checked it out - this is what it costs to buy an EP Digipack CD by itself from Century media:

Subtotal$17.98
Shipping$6.82
Tax $1.49
Order Total$26.29

They do offer $5 shipping for orders $50 or more and free shipping for orders $75 or more, to be fair, but it's still ridiculous.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Sunday, 11 July 2021 15:38 (four years ago)

I mean I kind of understand why Deathcrush was always $19.99 (cashing in on historically important material) but this EP seems like a good argument for $9.99 EPs

Shaidar Logoff (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 12 July 2021 11:34 (four years ago)

Yep, I haven't found that EP for less than $18 base price anywhere, I'll stick with streaming on that one.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 12 July 2021 13:45 (four years ago)

same here

not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Monday, 12 July 2021 14:03 (four years ago)

So, I am ashamed to admit that I am only just now getting around to Thy Catafalque, despite seeing you folks hyping his stuff for awhile now. Glad I finally did though, Vadak is just so gloriously bonkers and insane, I absolutely love it.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 12 July 2021 14:54 (four years ago)

For me Thy Catafalque is one for the "bands you keep trying to get into" thread.

beard papa, Monday, 12 July 2021 17:24 (four years ago)

Here's one of those sentences you have to read several times: Eyehategod will be playing a show on 9/11 (the 20th anniversary!) and Stormy Daniels will be running the merch table.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 12 July 2021 21:59 (four years ago)

that rules tbh

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Monday, 12 July 2021 22:04 (four years ago)

good call on the Drawn and Quartered upthread. it's a bit different than the older D&Q that I've heard.

and thank fuck for blastbeats, the last three DM albums I bought didn't really have any and I've missed them.

not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 13 July 2021 02:13 (four years ago)

Overkill bassist DD Verni putting out a rockabilly/big band record was not something I ever thought I would type... Here's the first single.

new Andrew WK songs sounds like he would love to do a power metal song but hasn't got the vocal range.

His twattish fanboys are trying to compare him to Dio.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk8wi4XcQgk

Pfunkboy AKA (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 14 July 2021 18:05 (four years ago)

The song definitely has a Dio-ish feel. I've hated AWK for 20 years but all three videos from this album have been freakish and fascinating, and honestly I'm kinda curious about the whole thing in a way I have never been about any of his previous work. He's going for a very explicit cosmic-horror/cult-initiation vibe here that reminds me of movies like Beyond the Black Rainbow and Devil's Candy, and I'm into it.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 14 July 2021 19:07 (four years ago)

New Dola (BC link upthread) is excellent, don't sleep on it if you enjoyed last year's s/t.

pomenitul, Thursday, 15 July 2021 13:36 (four years ago)

I dreamed I was at a Deicide show and Glen was getting his dick sucked while performing.

that is all.

not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Thursday, 15 July 2021 14:03 (four years ago)

So I didn't know that hyper *melodic* tech death was actually a thing:

pomenitul, Thursday, 15 July 2021 14:36 (four years ago)

This Ghastly album is hitting the spot. Organic-sounding psychedelic death metal that flows really nicely on the strength of the riffs.

jmm, Thursday, 15 July 2021 14:57 (four years ago)

bought a pass for maryland deathfest next year, hopefully see y'all there if festivals exist

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 July 2021 15:00 (four years ago)

oh damn that lineup is seeerious

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Thursday, 15 July 2021 15:02 (four years ago)

yeah i want to go but the Fringe Festival is always the same time every year and i'm usually in it :/

not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Thursday, 15 July 2021 15:03 (four years ago)

I have failed to get into the vocals on this album Khalkedonian Death by the Turkish band Diabolizer, but the music is great, so if the vocals work for you, you might like it a lot:
