Yeah that is indefensible

Bark Psychosis was an example of this for me, something about their name just made my eyes glaze over and ignore them, for years and years. Too bad! They are one of my favourite bands, now

I used to see Bark Psychosis' name in gig listings a lot at the time and the awkwardness in the name made me curious enough to go and see them on spec (still as a three-piece) they quickly became pretty much my favourite band and have remained so.

Maybe spend a little more time investigating the near-bottomless genre rather than using/be taken in by some cheap bait to confirm surface-level suspicions?

Def saw MBV in my sisters' collections for years and rmde at the name before finally checking them out after reading enough good press on them.

There's an alternate universe/timeline where MBV followed their original inspiration and ended up third tier Amphetamine Reptile noise misanthrope punk. They sorta "outgrew" their name. Meat Puppets, too. Must be others.

Most. The Beatles for sure outgrew that name. The Beach Boys.

I mean, jesus, even if they weren't fourth rate jamband also-rans that would still be one of the worst band names I've ever heard.

There's that whole category of band names you weren't put off by, but you feel you have to qualify recommendations of them with "but they're good, honestly" when the person you're talking to pulls a face. My Bloody Valentine and American Music Club for example.

Bands you like but only listen to when no one else is around because of the anxiety caused by worrying someone will ask what you're listening to and you'll have to say their name out loud

Haha, that's fair.

I came up with deflatormouse when i was 10, but there are other deflatormice out there. Including (i think) an emo band.

Foxygen, too, would have been ok as a screen name.

It's pretty interesting seeing what's a complete no-no for other people. I can see how agreeing a band name might be a nightmare. For me Foxygen is a bit goofy but it's short enough not to bother me. It's when a band name is three words and more of snippet of bad poetry than a band name that I'm like uh-uh.

Sam France: It was something my friend said about a guy that she found attractive. She said he was sexy or hot, or that he was her foxygen, or something like that. We were probably about 13. I don't know why, but it stuck.

I think a lot of terrible names probably come from bands when they are very young. See also poor old Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, whose career I think was probably sabotaged by that name.

Yeah for a time but by 1998 or so they were writing a lot of non-weird, classically beautiful songs that I’m sure could have had a wider audience without that baggage.

I was about to say, we're talking about a band that sang "i'm a pekingese/i'm a cottage cheese" over a faux metal riff with fake monty pythonesque opera singing.

Hobestly tho, I think their later stuff could have had a wider audeience if they'd written it in the 1970's

I have a friend who insists that Foxy Shazam is the worst band name of all time. I always maintain that it's not even the worst band name with 'foxy' in it tho. That name, despite my better instincts, actually makes me curious to hear the band.

I'd like to theorize that modifying 'foxy' with even more dubious words sonehow lessens the blow, but that would be terribly dishonest. The truth is i actually really like the word 'shazam'.
