xxp i will elide my jokes about Mumford and Sons and Carey Mulligan and instead point to the band's wack "centrist" politics

I thought I liked the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Was nice enough music to have in the background as I worked. But followed along with some of the lyrics last night and they were pure shit and it all made sense why they have such a terrible name.
― peace, man, Saturday, 26 June 2021 12:48 (four years ago)
I don't think I've ever done this tbh.

Artists You've Written Off/Pointedly Ignored because of their album names: I’m sorry but shit like “Panzerfaust” is why I don’t trust metal

I’m not sorry and shit like a Decibel rave that cites Varg lyrics as a selling point is also why

Bark Psychosis was an example of this for me, something about their name just made my eyes glaze over and ignore them, for years and years. Too bad! They are one of my favourite bands, now
― what's fgti up to these days? nothing. she's fake (flamboyant goon tie included), Sunday, 27 June 2021 13:10 (four years ago)
I used to see Bark Psychosis' name in gig listings a lot at the time and the awkwardness in the name made me curious enough to go and see them on spec (still as a three-piece) they quickly became pretty much my favourite band and have remained so.

Maybe spend a little more time investigating the near-bottomless genre rather than using/be taken in by some cheap bait to confirm surface-level suspicions?
― Master of Treacle, Monday, 28 June 2021 02:11 (four years ago)
i hope I’m not alone in putting off listening to MBV for many years because of their name.

Lol, you probably are, I’d wager.

Def saw MBV in my sisters' collections for years and rmde at the name before finally checking them out after reading enough good press on them.
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 28 June 2021 15:45 (four years ago)
There's an alternate universe/timeline where MBV followed their original inspiration and ended up third tier Amphetamine Reptile noise misanthrope punk. They sorta "outgrew" their name. Meat Puppets, too. Must be others.
― Citole Country (bendy), Monday, 28 June 2021 16:13 (four years ago)
Most. The Beatles for sure outgrew that name. The Beach Boys.
― enochroot, Monday, 28 June 2021 16:16 (four years ago)
master of treacle i said trust not like but why would it matter to metal whether i do either
― Left, Monday, 28 June 2021 16:29 (four years ago)
One might say that Smashing Pumpkins outgrew their name, or did they in fact grow into it?

always parse that as Foxy Generation, not sure if that's better or worse.

I just thought the concept of ‘trust’ is a weird way to approach a genre of music, whether you like or dislike it

Pigeons Playing Ping-Pong
I mean, jesus, even if they weren't fourth rate jamband also-rans that would still be one of the worst band names I've ever heard.
― a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 1 July 2021 18:59 (four years ago)
There's that whole category of band names you weren't put off by, but you feel you have to qualify recommendations of them with "but they're good, honestly" when the person you're talking to pulls a face. My Bloody Valentine and American Music Club for example.
― the kim variant (Matt #2), Thursday, 1 July 2021 19:11 (four years ago)
Bands you like but only listen to when no one else is around because of the anxiety caused by worrying someone will ask what you're listening to and you'll have to say their name out loud
― cwkiii, Friday, 2 July 2021 00:27 (four years ago)
(Which also has the separate subcategory of names you don't know how to pronounce, but that's off topic)
I still don’t know how to pronounce “Charli XCX” (and I’ve listened to all her albums).

― ✖,
Yeah, red card. You can't come back from 'foxygen'
― Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 00:54 (four years ago)
A band called Deflatormouse C/D?
― Alba, Friday, 2 July 2021 00:58 (four years ago)
Haha, that's fair.
― Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 01:02 (four years ago)
I came up with deflatormouse when i was 10, but there are other deflatormice out there. Including (i think) an emo band.
― Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 01:04 (four years ago)
Foxygen, too, would have been ok as a screen name.
― Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 01:14 (four years ago)
It's pretty interesting seeing what's a complete no-no for other people. I can see how agreeing a band name might be a nightmare. For me Foxygen is a bit goofy but it's short enough not to bother me. It's when a band name is three words and more of snippet of bad poetry than a band name that I'm like uh-uh.
― Alba, Friday, 2 July 2021 01:26 (four years ago)
foxygen is a triple whammy of sounding stupid, inexplicable and somehow boring
― ✖, Friday, 2 July 2021 01:33 (four years ago)
They were just kids
Pitchfork: Which one of you came up with the name Foxygen?Sam France: It was something my friend said about a guy that she found attractive. She said he was sexy or hot, or that he was her foxygen, or something like that. We were probably about 13. I don't know why, but it stuck.

I think a lot of terrible names probably come from bands when they are very young. See also poor old Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, whose career I think was probably sabotaged by that name.
― Alba, Friday, 2 July 2021 01:38 (four years ago)
After struggling to come up with a band name, they decided "we might as well stick with the most ridiculous crap name we could think of."
Fair enough.
― Alba, Friday, 2 July 2021 01:40 (four years ago)
"foxy" in general needs to be approached with caution.Gzm never stood a chance anyway.
― Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 02:01 (four years ago)
Good or not, the name suited them for a time
― Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 02:02 (four years ago)
Yeah for a time but by 1998 or so they were writing a lot of non-weird, classically beautiful songs that I’m sure could have had a wider audience without that baggage.
― Alba, Friday, 2 July 2021 02:07 (four years ago)
I was about to say, we're talking about a band that sang "i'm a pekingese/i'm a cottage cheese" over a faux metal riff with fake monty pythonesque opera singing.
― Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 2 July 2021 02:09 (four years ago)
Hobestly tho, I think their later stuff could have had a wider audeience if they'd written it in the 1970's
