With regards to J Boogie’s Dubtronic Science, it seems like they had a long-running weekly club night in SF that was generally highly regarded. Unless I’m confusing them with some other dubby boogie-ish act.

but i've realised i almost always like or retroactively justify the names when i like the music so i should maybe be less judgmental of stuff i haven't heard yet. within limits - even if the cherry poppin daddies made excellent music i would still fucking hate them

i was always put off by another band name connoting old-timey mental deficiency

in that case I think the name perfectly reflects the music so whether it attracts or repels you, it's done its job (I guess that might be true of many others in this thread tbf)

Bark Psychosis was an example of this for me, something about their name just made my eyes glaze over and ignore them, for years and years. Too bad! They are one of my favourite bands, now

I used to see Bark Psychosis' name in gig listings a lot at the time and the awkwardness in the name made me curious enough to go and see them on spec (still as a three-piece) they quickly became pretty much my favourite band and have remained so.

Def saw MBV in my sisters' collections for years and rmde at the name before finally checking them out after reading enough good press on them.

There's an alternate universe/timeline where MBV followed their original inspiration and ended up third tier Amphetamine Reptile noise misanthrope punk. They sorta "outgrew" their name. Meat Puppets, too. Must be others.
