Joanna Gruesome

and any number of bands that pun on other artists' or celebrities' names (cf. Com Truise upthread)

xpost - I usually hate those punny ones too but I admit to loving "Joanna Gruesome" just because it's such a corrective to Newsom's twee persona

J Boogie's Dubtronic Science

if it weren't for the fact that i picked up a cd of theirs for a coin in a charity shop last year then i would think this was a joke/made up name.
but, nope, it's a genuine thing.
as for the album : it's perfectly fine downtempo/library grooves, and rather enjoyable.

mark e, Thursday, 24 June 2021 19:27 (four years ago)

i too made the mistake of avoiding beabadoobee because of the name, but actually she's pretty good tbh. this is off the new EP and it's kind of hayley williams x the sundays x sixpence none the richer x stina nordenstam x the pale saints:

Bed Wettin' Bad Boys, just heard of them

Left, Thursday, 24 June 2021 19:49 (four years ago)

as someone posted upthread, Mott The Hoople may have gotten there first, but yes, Sixpence None The Richer were way ahead of the The game as well

named after the limp bizkit song that was named after the tool song?

Left, Thursday, 24 June 2021 21:04 (four years ago)

xxp the The may in fact be the least bothersome element of Sixpence None The Richer. (And it is still bothersome, to be sure. Way bothersome.)

henry s, Thursday, 24 June 2021 21:07 (four years ago)

xpost that's Stinkfist (re: Tool). i mind it less as a song title, but as a band name, nah

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 June 2021 21:09 (four years ago)

other The bands off the top of my head:

I’m not really susceptible to 80s nostalgia, involving stuff from when I was actually a kid (that does feel cheap to me).

Pfft if there was an act called Mork From Ork I’d stan for them all day regardless of actual talent. (Or even Nanoo Nanoo really.)

__

With regards to J Boogie’s Dubtronic Science, it seems like they had a long-running weekly club night in SF that was generally highly regarded. Unless I’m confusing them with some other dubby boogie-ish act.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 24 June 2021 21:12 (four years ago)

…Now someone’s going to dig up an actual act called Mork From Ork and you call all witness me eat my words.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 24 June 2021 21:14 (four years ago)

xps bizkit had a song called stinkfinger on their first album which i assume was named in tribute to tool. either that or gross minds think alike. same goes for the band name. i object to both, for either purpose

Left, Thursday, 24 June 2021 21:14 (four years ago)

": it's perfectly fine downtempo/library grooves, and rather enjoyable."

Aye. I haven't heard a whole album but a bit ago "Oceanic Lullaby" came up on streaming radio and I really liked it.

If they were a new band today, would The The be called The the The?

Hideous Lump, Thursday, 24 June 2021 22:01 (four years ago)

how about Insane Clown Posse?

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 24 June 2021 23:13 (four years ago)

I love that beabadoobee album from last year, heavy early 90's feel to it.

can't believe this ILM thread turned out to be a list of every band

Take me home, Jordan Rhodes (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 June 2021 03:25 (four years ago)

We need two more complementary threads:

- artists you had written off because of their names, but they turned out to be pretty good!
- artists you wanted to hear because of their names, but they turned out to be pretty bad!

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 25 June 2021 03:39 (four years ago)

great band, shame about the name

great name, shame about the band

Kitchens of Distinction are definitely the latter one for me (sorry, Ned).

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 25 June 2021 05:09 (four years ago)

how does Spellling figure into all of this?

ten man poland chasing this means hamsik feasts (breastcrawl), Friday, 25 June 2021 05:51 (four years ago)

great on both counts

but i've realised i almost always like or retroactively justify the names when i like the music so i should maybe be less judgmental of stuff i haven't heard yet. within limits - even if the cherry poppin daddies made excellent music i would still fucking hate them

Left, Friday, 25 June 2021 15:30 (four years ago)

That name is actually a reference to hard-working fathers who harvest fruit.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 25 June 2021 15:34 (four years ago)

I'm surprised nobody on this thread has mentioned the Insane Clown Posse

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Friday, 25 June 2021 15:50 (four years ago)

That name is actually a reference to an Old West volunteer group that rounded up mentally-ill comics.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 25 June 2021 15:54 (four years ago)

i was always put off by another band name connoting old-timey mental deficiency

Mumford & Sons

davey, Friday, 25 June 2021 16:09 (four years ago)

in that case I think the name perfectly reflects the music so whether it attracts or repels you, it's done its job (I guess that might be true of many others in this thread tbf)

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Friday, 25 June 2021 16:23 (four years ago)

it's true, the name telegraphs their whole thing so well that i know for a fact i will never need to listen to them to confirm

davey, Friday, 25 June 2021 16:32 (four years ago)

Given their terrible name and their ILM derided swing-ska-Oingo Boingo sound, Cherry Poppin' Daddies may be the guiltiest guilty pleasure CD I own.

I might have written off The Good, The Bad and The Queen if I hadn't already written them off because of Albarn.

Macklemore
Papa Roach
Mumford and Sons, seconded. Just sounds blah. Will never listen to this. Don't even know what it is.

Bands with a person's name + band ie Dave Matthews Band. Like, come up with something cool like Vinnie Vincent Invasion

pj, Friday, 25 June 2021 19:10 (four years ago)

The Beatles.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 June 2021 19:12 (four years ago)

Does everyone know that Mumford is the name of the main guy in Mumford & Sons? Who I just found out today is married to Carey Mulligan!

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Friday, 25 June 2021 19:42 (four years ago)

tbh before i really knew anything about him, I wrote off John Foxx for his name, thinking he was some sub-Howard Jones/nik kershaw type major label dude

brimstead, Friday, 25 June 2021 21:01 (four years ago)

not that I have a problem with either of those dudes nowadays lol

brimstead, Friday, 25 June 2021 21:01 (four years ago)

xxp i will elide my jokes about Mumford and Sons and Carey Mulligan and instead point to the band's wack "centrist" politics

I thought I liked the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Was nice enough music to have in the background as I worked. But followed along with some of the lyrics last night and they were pure shit and it all made sense why they have such a terrible name.

peace, man, Saturday, 26 June 2021 12:48 (four years ago)

I don't think I've ever done this tbh.
