I’m highly partial to names like Ross From Friends and DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ (but I totally get why others aren’t).

Who isn't guided by voices in their head?

Bathtub Shitter for many years, and it turns out they're actually good and kinda musical (for death metal/grind that is)

there was a glasgow band called fuck-off machete but i can't remember if they were good or not.

I used to be email penpals with Natasha and she sent me some F.O. Machete stuff that I don't think ever got commercially released. Now I feel bad because I don't know where I put it.

“Ross From Friends” to me represents the worst of rave culture and discounts all that is good about it.

If you were a fan of the show as a child I could see the nostalgic appeal tho. They have made some decent music too. (I listened to it by accident ok?)

Got to say the name Insane Clown Posse just never quite sat with me

nashwan, Thursday, 24 June 2021 10:32 (four years ago)

Can't get over the idea of someone coming up with the name of Cigarettes After Sex as name and it getting past the stage of their friends/families/label wincing/'having a word'

PaulTMA, Thursday, 24 June 2021 11:05 (four years ago)

Lmao. Maybe it was like Chicane which I was recently bored enough to learn came up with their name by pulling it out of a hat.

(Apparently it’s a racing term? Dunno.)

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 24 June 2021 11:10 (four years ago)

Why’d you name the band Built to Spill? Were you bad at holding drinks?
Ha! It was a game my wife and I played where we’d take turns writing a word. She’d write a word, then I’d write a word and we’d make up poems and stories. So when I was trying to come up with a band name we went back through them together to see if there was anything interesting and it was a part of that.

I guess some people just don't care what they call their band. Fair enough.

Alba, Thursday, 24 June 2021 12:07 (four years ago)

I always liked that band name, just the cadence and off-rhyme. Maybe it doesn't sound as good in a British accent idk?

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Thursday, 24 June 2021 12:28 (four years ago)

can't believe nobody said Insane Clown Posse yet

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 June 2021 13:20 (four years ago)

Naming a band can be a wearing process, especially if all the members have divergent ideas of what an acceptable name is. So arbitrary or least dislikable ones are often the best option and usually borne of compromise.

Maresn3st, Thursday, 24 June 2021 13:39 (four years ago)

my band's name in high school was Oonglebinky and I don't remember what an Oonglebinky is

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 June 2021 13:43 (four years ago)

The only problem with Insane Clown Posse is that two people are not enough to constitute a Posse, I would say you need at least four.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 24 June 2021 13:46 (four years ago)

if insane clown posse has taught us anything its that a posse, like a family, can take many forms

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Thursday, 24 June 2021 13:49 (four years ago)

XXP - If Oonglebinky were a UK band they would have been a festival band from the very late 80s, sounded a bit like Ozric Tentacles and I would have had a bootleg of them at the Treworgey Tree Fayre in 1989.

Maresn3st, Thursday, 24 June 2021 13:52 (four years ago)

xp so what you are saying is that the fans of the Insane Clown Posse, the juggalos, are in fact part of the Posse, as they have formed their own subculture?

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 24 June 2021 13:55 (four years ago)

If you were a fan of the show as a child I could see the nostalgic appeal tho

I was actually old enough in the 90s that 90s nostalgia deployed by younger people “works” on a certain face-value level for me. I’m not really susceptible to 80s nostalgia, involving stuff from when I was actually a kid (that does feel cheap to me).

She's a solo artist, apparently. For some reason I afford them more leeway with silly names. Unless they're Father John Misty, it seems.

if it weren't for the fact that i picked up a cd of theirs for a coin in a charity shop last year then i would think this was a joke/made up name.
but, nope, it's a genuine thing.
as for the album : it's perfectly fine downtempo/library grooves, and rather enjoyable.

mark e, Thursday, 24 June 2021 19:27 (four years ago)

i too made the mistake of avoiding beabadoobee because of the name, but actually she's pretty good tbh. this is off the new EP and it's kind of hayley williams x the sundays x sixpence none the richer x stina nordenstam x the pale saints:

named after the limp bizkit song that was named after the tool song?

xxp the The may in fact be the least bothersome element of Sixpence None The Richer. (And it is still bothersome, to be sure. Way bothersome.)

Pfft if there was an act called Mork From Ork I’d stan for them all day regardless of actual talent. (Or even Nanoo Nanoo really.)

__

With regards to J Boogie’s Dubtronic Science, it seems like they had a long-running weekly club night in SF that was generally highly regarded. Unless I’m confusing them with some other dubby boogie-ish act.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 24 June 2021 21:12 (four years ago)

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 24 June 2021 21:14 (four years ago)

xps bizkit had a song called stinkfinger on their first album which i assume was named in tribute to tool. either that or gross minds think alike. same goes for the band name. i object to both, for either purpose

Aye. I haven't heard a whole album but a bit ago "Oceanic Lullaby" came up on streaming radio and I really liked it.
