Did he ever admit to Haitian Remorse about the lies?

Sometimes a joke flies over my head and then I get it the following day. A+

Soccer Mommy is a good call, purposely avoided her first album because of that name. But a local radio station played one off her recent album and I ended up liking that a whole lot.

I always thought Nirvana was a terrible name

i havent pointedly ignored them but if we're going after sacred cows i've always thought The Beatles is kind of a hilariously dumb band name

i think i made a mistake re Fuck Buttons.
judged purely on the name.
didn't even jump in with weatherall on production.
suspect i would love them now.

mark e, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 17:16 (five years ago)

I'm never going to listen to any band with Fuck in the name tbh.

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 17:24 (five years ago)

Fucked Up is incredible though

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 17:27 (five years ago)

Fucked Up and Fuck Buttons are great and their F-word names should not prevent a person from experiencing their music. Holy Fuck is also a stupid name / decent band. My favorite fuck name is "Fuck the Facts". It just fits.

beard papa, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 17:45 (five years ago)

Holy Fuck is fine enough but i remember being disappointed that the music music didnt live up to the edginess of the band name. Fucked Up on the other hand earns their f-word

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 17:55 (five years ago)

In November 2008, the band participated with other similarly named bands, including Holy Fuck, Fucked Up and Fuck Buttons in the Festival of the Fuck Bands music festival in the village of Fucking, Austria.

there was a glasgow band called fuck-off machete but i can't remember if they were good or not. chris de burgh got upset when he saw their record in monorail in glasgow, i remember that being a thing but i can't find it online anymore.

I've heard the alleged FO Machete/Chris de Burgh disgust story being also attributed to Arab Strap's 'The Cunted Circus' live album. Supposedly he booked Mono as a small venue to do some kind of private CD release event in, where he caught sight of an offending album by either band

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 20:31 (five years ago)

I now have a mental image of him leaning on the counter chatting about his favourite fIREHOSE bootlegs with Dep.

Tool
Spoon
Built to Spill
Deerhunter
Father John Misty
Guided by Voices

Cigarettes After Sex
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone
Broken Social Scene
Olivia Tremor Control

BSS, Casiotone — those are good indie acts (coming from a guy normally averse to indie).

My choice: Ross From Friends

Com Truise too probably, although that might relate to Sc13ntology as much as anything else.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 24 June 2021 00:58 (five years ago)

Deerhunter — meh.

I do also associate Broken Social Scene and Built To Spill even though there’s not really any connection to speak of.

This list makes me wonder what you consider a good band name.

Or are you just agreeing with poster who said all band names suck, we just got used to some of them.

enochroot, Thursday, 24 June 2021 01:09 (five years ago)

Built to Spill and GBV are both excellent band names, IMO (whatever you may think of those bands).

search term: buttrock (morrisp), Thursday, 24 June 2021 01:24 (five years ago)

I suppose the are all toxically dull in quite a American male way. Father John Misty and Bon Iver are maybe the odd ones out and I dislike those for different reasons.

I can’t think off any amazing band names off the top of my head but I don’t mind most. The Byrds, 100gecs and Blondie are all fine, for example.

Alba, Thursday, 24 June 2021 01:28 (five years ago)

I mentioned GBV before and got pushback. I mean I guess it's a good name for a gospel accapella group or some shit

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 24 June 2021 01:30 (five years ago)

I think the meaning is that the artist(s) is/are guided by the voices in their heads?

beard papa, Thursday, 24 June 2021 01:47 (five years ago)

I’m highly partial to names like Ross From Friends and DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ (but I totally get why others aren’t).

Who isn't guided by voices in their head?

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 24 June 2021 01:57 (five years ago)

Bathtub Shitter for many years, and it turns out they're actually good and kinda musical (for death metal/grind that is)

there was a glasgow band called fuck-off machete but i can't remember if they were good or not.

I used to be email penpals with Natasha and she sent me some F.O. Machete stuff that I don't think ever got commercially released. Now I feel bad because I don't know where I put it.

“Ross From Friends” to me represents the worst of rave culture and discounts all that is good about it.

If you were a fan of the show as a child I could see the nostalgic appeal tho. They have made some decent music too. (I listened to it by accident ok?)

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 24 June 2021 09:57 (five years ago)

Got to say the name Insane Clown Posse just never quite sat with me

nashwan, Thursday, 24 June 2021 10:32 (five years ago)

Can't get over the idea of someone coming up with the name of Cigarettes After Sex as name and it getting past the stage of their friends/families/label wincing/'having a word'

PaulTMA, Thursday, 24 June 2021 11:05 (five years ago)

Lmao. Maybe it was like Chicane which I was recently bored enough to learn came up with their name by pulling it out of a hat.

(Apparently it’s a racing term? Dunno.)

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 24 June 2021 11:10 (five years ago)

Why’d you name the band Built to Spill? Were you bad at holding drinks?
Ha! It was a game my wife and I played where we’d take turns writing a word. She’d write a word, then I’d write a word and we’d make up poems and stories. So when I was trying to come up with a band name we went back through them together to see if there was anything interesting and it was a part of that.

I guess some people just don't care what they call their band. Fair enough.

Alba, Thursday, 24 June 2021 12:07 (five years ago)

I always liked that band name, just the cadence and off-rhyme. Maybe it doesn't sound as good in a British accent idk?

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Thursday, 24 June 2021 12:28 (five years ago)

can't believe nobody said Insane Clown Posse yet

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 June 2021 13:20 (five years ago)

Naming a band can be a wearing process, especially if all the members have divergent ideas of what an acceptable name is. So arbitrary or least dislikable ones are often the best option and usually borne of compromise.

Maresn3st, Thursday, 24 June 2021 13:39 (five years ago)

my band's name in high school was Oonglebinky and I don't remember what an Oonglebinky is
