Volcano the Bear ruled, and the construction would be weird and tortured and much more dislikable if it were a verb.

God, yes, that is terrible.

Gay Witch Abortion. If the name didn't tell me to steer clear, this description did: Like a unicorn spearing it’s prey, having so little patience it completely shreads the kittens into tiny morsels of sweet bloody pulp candies.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:13 (four years ago)

there are a non-zero number of people itt who listen to a band called Anal Stabwound

*raises hand*

There are two French power metal bands I have never listened to because of their names: Dragony (is it an adjective?) and Fairyland.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:15 (four years ago)

GWA are good though. pummeling live xp

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:17 (four years ago)

Trollfest is def one I wasn't going to listen to because of the name.

then I heard them while waiting for Possessed to go on stage.

My suspicions were confirmed

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:28 (four years ago)

Black Label Society was another who I refused to listen to because of the name.

finally heard them. yep. was right to have ignored them.

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:40 (four years ago)

Honestly I prob pointedly ignore about 70% of all musical artists due to their name. There's too much music out there, so it allows me to quickly whittle down the options. Sure I may miss out on an artist I might've enjoyed but overall it's been a very useful heuristic.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 17:07 (four years ago)

Black Label Society was another who I refused to listen to because of the name.

finally heard them. yep. was right to have ignored them.

I on the other hand ignored them because of their chud army of fake-biker fans who I used to see at every show in their stupid vests.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 17:13 (four years ago)

that...didn't help matters with me either, lol

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 17:16 (four years ago)

I really want to write off any band with punctuation symbols in their name (not umlauts, which are pretty cool, but stuff like !!!, Sun)))))))O or whatever, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, etc.) but mostly I find I like their music.

Rae Sremmurd bugs me, sorry not sorry

Ludacristine McVie (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 17:34 (four years ago)

front bottoms could be the greatest band of all time but i am definitely never going to listen to a note they make.

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 17:35 (four years ago)

Is adding one or more redundant letters to a word/name the new having the word "Wolf" in your name?

I always assumed this was because all the band names were already taken.

even then bands are still using names that are already taken, e.g. I saw gig listings not long ago for a band called the Shivvers that are not the early 80s power pop group. They (the new band) should perhaps have called themselves the Shivvvers, or even used Google when they named their band, not that many bands seem to be aware of search engines given the number of them that reuse names.

bovarism, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 18:05 (four years ago)

My Morning Jacket

Chet Faker (ANY variation of this thing, including Wevie Stonder. Why would a band do this? It is the band naming equivalant of getting a shit tattoo.)

Porcupine Tree

I'd say most band names are bad, but less meaningfully so with repetition

It took me about 10 years to listen to Planningtorock

It sounds to me like a name some guys in the Local Authority Planning department would come up with for their after-work jammz

kinder, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 19:51 (four years ago)

there's a group called Seething Fuck Patties that released a song called "I Fucked a Sasquatch" who seem to be an internet joke who self-released an album or something but inexplicably, they are on EVERY Touchtunes machine across America.

so...them.

Porcupine Tree

I actually really dug this band name before realizing it was a pun

tbf the name was supposed to be dumb, iirc Wilson made up a bunch of fake "lost" psychedelic bands when he was a teenager and that was one of them

frogbs, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 19:58 (four years ago)

that's a pun? idgi

Always thought Pineapple Thief was a worse name.

lots of bad band names for sure but i'm not usually scared off by a name alone unless it's something like Reggae Rapids, which I spotted in an upcoming concert listing the other day. wtf that sounds like a racist disneyland ride.

Joke/pun names are pretty bad… I liked the name Camper Van Beethoven more when I originally thought it was some dada sh!t, than when I got the “joke.”

search term: buttrock (morrisp), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 20:14 (four years ago)

yeah, I became increasingly disappointed as I grew up and realized how much of what I once thought was weird and zany nonsense turned out to be clever wordplay.

i hope no one cares about AIDS wolf these days

I still do. They were an awesome band, and are rad people btw. You might actually like them, if you weren't such a petty snob.

Oh god, okay, so it actually was the blindingly obvious one that made me assume I was missing some other, presumably archaic and British, meaning. Got it.

Same, I’m a fan

brimstead, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 20:53 (four years ago)

I think I have an aversion to anything that has a name that smacks of "elves and fairies in the forest" or new age/hippie stuff - Animal Collective made me think of hippie jam bands where the musicians have power animals.

― photoshop your disgusting ass partner into passive-aggressive notes (sarahel), Tuesday, April 14, 2009 12:27 PM (twelve years ago)

I still have this aversion tbh which is why I have never listened to Porcupine Tree. ... also band names that are whimsical children's books or might as well be.

sarahell, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 20:54 (four years ago)

I still don't get it.

It's not so much a pun as it is a portmanteau.

What's wrong with "Megan Thee Stallion"? (I think someone else mentioned her earlier.)

search term: buttrock (morrisp), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 21:30 (four years ago)

I don't think it's terrible, but the way some people emphasize "Thee" when it's said out loud sits uncomfortably close to the people that are really proud about attending THE Ohio State University.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 21:37 (four years ago)

Oddly, Andrew Hill. No honorific title, funky nickname, or melodious or alliterative given name made it hard for me to keep him on the mental list of jazz artists to check out. Maybe even some subconscious connection with Windham Hill Records?

Fun fact: in early interviews, he claimed he was born in Port-au-Prince, and that his name was originally spelled “Hille.” He later said, “I was born in Chicago and had no interest in Haiti or patois, but that lie enabled me to get gigs on the college circuit, the Dave Brubeck thing, you know. People looked at jazz music as exotic and pretending you came from Haiti helped."
