John Cowsill was a beast on the 50th anniversary tour, made it clear why he was the only guy that got brought over from Mike's band for his playing / singing.

(Mike's bandleader / guitarist was the only other guy brought over at all, and I'm sure he did heroic work as a mediator & played well, but the Wondermints dude just stayed home to make room for Cowsill.)

I don't remember who was in the band when I saw that 50th show (besides the Beach Boys and Wondermints guy(s)), but I do know there were like 8 guitars on stage, and they didn't need 8 guitars.

Was just thinking the other day that one of the many unusual things about the Beach Boys is that there are so many songs *about* surfing and surf culture, but not much actual surf music.

Think that guy says he started that page because other BB sites were either Mike-leaning sites or Brian-leaning sites and he is tilting at the windmill of splitting the difference. He also goes into some Brian vs. Carl beefing that I didn't really know about.

Read Steven Gaines' early 80s Beach Boys tome for the first time recently and on that evidence every single one of the Boys was a shit (except maybe Bruce Johnston), and they were p racist as well. And yet still Mike came out on top (bottom).

Oh also in the "Heroes and Villains" book, all of the other Beach Boys disapprove of Brian dating a black woman and try to get her arrested so she can't follow them on tour. Al says something like “does he really have to put his arm around her”

I'm not a big BB fan but the Jokermen podcast is now going through every Beach Boys album (having already done Dylan & Lou Reed/John Cale).

Also one of Dennis's wives/gfs (clearly the one Gaines had the closest rapport with) calls a black bouncer at a Bill Graham venue the N word, and when Graham bans the group from his venues as a result Gaines clearly takes the wife/gf's side.

So their biographers are also racist?!?

i mean i fucking LOVE brian dgmw and SMiLE is just... classic. very classic. but i've thought about this probably too much: i've just assumed they were all horribly racist in that goid old fashioned incorrigible old white person baby boomer "ya we're just kinda better than them" sorta way. i mean they came from the institution that co-signed brian's outright theft of chuck berry so they obviously are from a very racist system. not "fuck them all" outright forever but let's not feign any shock or outrage here. also perhaps i've just mentally prepared myself for the worst when it comes to establishment white men.
