I thought this stunk
― ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Friday, 11 June 2021 04:52 (four years ago)
it's fine but it's no "green light"
― ufo, Friday, 11 June 2021 04:57 (four years ago)
Oh forget it chorus just came on, it definitely sounds like freedom now.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, June 10, 2021 8:34 PM bookmarkflaglink
Yeah, I spent the first 2:00 thinking "yeah, I guess it's roughly the same tempo as "Freedom 90 but what are people talking about" and then the drums and bg vocal melody kicked in. Not that this fact makes me inclined to listen to it again.
I'll still fuck with Green Light tho
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 June 2021 05:00 (four years ago)
Thought it sounded like “moving on up”. There is a weird structure to it - totally horizontal and never goes anywhere. It’s like an arty version of a late 90s CD single.
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 11 June 2021 07:59 (four years ago)
it has a pretty clear build to it? if anything i think it's too slow to get going
― ufo, Friday, 11 June 2021 08:44 (four years ago)
I hope the new album has some Happy Mondays influences as well.
Also, in the cover art for the single, is she straight-up flashing vadge?

Did...did an Instagram ad write this?

I would like this more had Olivia Rodrigo sung it

NYT profile to promote Melodrama pointed out that she doesn't play an instrument as it is traditionally understood, which I thought was interesting…if there is anything that you can point to as her purely musical signature, it is surely that, initially via whatever Logic-type software she would have learned in 2011, 2012, she can do vocal arrangements without Jack antonoff or whoever… and that quality is very much evidenced here… also, there can be little doubt that BIllie E was hugely into her…
― veronica moser, Friday, 11 June 2021 14:38 (four years ago)
The 10-year-old hated this (but her complaint was that it sounded like Olivia Rodrigo who she also hates)
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 11 June 2021 14:41 (four years ago)
Xpost: she doesn't play an instrument as it is traditionally understood, but she is very much the primary composer of her music…she's a good dancer…
― veronica moser, Friday, 11 June 2021 14:44 (four years ago)
the eternal singer's lament, where people don't think of you as a musician because you make music entirely with your body
― 80's hair metal , and good praise music ! (DJP), Friday, 11 June 2021 14:47 (four years ago)
Do many pop singers play instruments? I wouldn’t have assumed so
― like a d4mn sociopath! (morrisp), Friday, 11 June 2021 15:00 (four years ago)
No but I think "singer/songwriter" is a different mental category for most listeners than "pop singer"

feels like the drummer was stuck in traffic until most of this is finished, and they should maybe re-record with them there from the start?
― Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Friday, 11 June 2021 17:42 (four years ago)
anyway this is far more Soak Up The Shine than Freedom 90... it may even be the same chord progression?
*Soak Up The Sun

people keep naming all these songs w/ huge memorable hooks as comparison points, not really doing this song any favors
― J0rdan S., Friday, 11 June 2021 17:46 (four years ago)
Somehow reminds me of post-peak Beck.
― Van Horn Street, Friday, 11 June 2021 18:39 (four years ago)
Lorde says the unconscious “blueprint” was a Primal Scream song (“Loaded”)—she even reached out for Gillespie’s “blessing” after recording it.
― like a d4mn sociopath! (morrisp), Saturday, 12 June 2021 19:03 (four years ago)
i heard "loaded" too, not "freedom" as much at first.
― treeship., Saturday, 12 June 2021 19:10 (four years ago)
i think the song is fine idk. the cover art is bad i think.
― treeship., Saturday, 12 June 2021 19:11 (four years ago)
like too lowest common denominator, an obvious nod to "cheeky" tik tok videos which is a depressing reference point to me.

― intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Saturday, 12 June 2021 19:25 (four years ago)
the press statement brad posted is really cringey too. i like the loaded/freedom rhythm though and the horn part that comes in near the end.
― treeship., Saturday, 12 June 2021 19:27 (four years ago)
maybe i'm jealous that i'm not feral and free and vibrating at the highest level when summer comes around. all criticism is autobiography.

not listened yet, gonna wait and see if I encounter it in the course of life, seeming doubtful?
― intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Saturday, 12 June 2021 21:54 (four years ago)
the comparisons to "Freedom '90" are freaking me out, first because "Freedom '90" is one of the most buoyant songs ever written, secondly because it has a pulse.
― So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 12 June 2021 21:55 (four years ago)
xp At this point, I fear it will be difficult for you to listen without prejudice.
― like a d4mn sociopath! (morrisp), Saturday, 12 June 2021 22:01 (four years ago)
This song is neither particularly good nor memorable. I was trying to think how it compared to the new Billie Eilish, but that song was not very good or memorable, either, so I couldn't remember it.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 12 June 2021 22:09 (four years ago)
The coda sounds really similar to "At the Holiday Party" from the last St. Vincent record.
― ˈʌglɪɪst preɪ, Saturday, 12 June 2021 22:24 (four years ago)
I feel like post-Fall Asleep Billie can get across a just-OK song on the strength of her performance alone, in a way that Lorde (despite being an artistic forerunner) can’t.
― like a d4mn sociopath! (morrisp), Saturday, 12 June 2021 22:41 (four years ago)

it tries to do the thing that freedom does. it fails.
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Saturday, 12 June 2021 23:23 (four years ago)
it starts a little sultry and downtempo and then the "freedom"/"loaded" section is meant to be like a moment of catharsis when it kicks in at the 2:00 mark. i don't think it's really supposed to be joyful all the way through like freedom '90.
honestly, all current music seems to have at least some trace of gloom.
