As long as Robin takes care of all vocal duties, it could be good.

Speaking of Montrealers, every year brings its share of top-shelf Québécois black metal and this year I'm tempted to argue that Oriflamme (feat. the drummer from Atramentus and an ex-member of Ossuaire) are its torchbearers:

forgot to mention but latest Flotsam and Jetsam is again solid. they're on a good run on their last few albums!

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Thursday, 10 June 2021 22:59 (five years ago)

Bands of note with albums being released today:

AFI
Cold Cave
Go Ahead And Die (Max Cavalera and Son)
Mammoth WVH
Mr. Bungle (Live Video)

I realize that AFI and Cold Cave are only tangentially relevant in this thread but there is support for those bands in metal circles, I think.

totally kicking myself for not checking out that 2019 Amenra fire ritual footage, they probably play the complete new album there (part 2, linked above, 10:35 is the start of another as yet unknown song, for instance)

Revolver got all of my favorites except for all the ones that aren't Poppy.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 16:18 (five years ago)

The Gojira and Rob Zombie records are good; the Frozen Soul is OK but I can think of at least a dozen death metal albums I like better from this year; and Poppy is...you know what? Fine. If that's your thing, that's your thing and we really have nothing to talk about, so fuck it, whatever.

Mayhem has an EP out on 7/9. It has one new song, a couple tracks that were bonus songs with deluxe editions of Daemon, their last studio album, and four punk rock covers.

Bassist Necrobutcher enlisted two of the band’s early punk-era vocalists, Maniac and Messiah, for guest appearances on the cover songs.

“My other contribution was to bring in two old members because of their obvious connection with punk: Maniac on the Dead Kennedys track and Billy (Messiah) on the Discharge track and some of the others."

Atavistic Black Disorder / Kommando EP:

01. Voces Ab Alta
02. Black Glass Communion
03. Everlasting Dying Flame
04. In Defense Of Our Future (Discharge Cover)
05. Hellnation (Dead Kennedys Cover)
06. Only Death (Rudimentary Peni Cover)
07. Commando (Ramones Cover)

I got a digital promo of it and the punk covers are far more reverent than might be expected.

yeah this scratches the same itch as Gruesome, not shocking as Terry Butler's in the group. never be as unhinged as the old classics, but with fun squealy rifffs, who cares

from last year, but this is a local band that is now based in FL that reformed after a 30 year hiatus last year, called (quite unoriginally) Haunted - https://haunted666.bandcamp.com/album/haunted

Blackened death metal with occasional keyboards, really evil arrangements and vocals, and lots of evil little demonic interludes, except the dude who does the voices of the demons sounds like Jabba the Hutt

Not super excited about the prospect of live shows yet, but Napalm Death and Eyehategod on Halloween is pretty tempting. They're opening for a Daveless GWAR, so I'll be leaving early.

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Friday, 18 June 2021 02:28 (four years ago)

Desaster is a great band, I always thought their secret ingredient was their drummer Stefan Hüskens who brings a really great groove to it all, but apparently he left for Asphyx and Sodom, and there's now a new dude?

new Witch Vomit EP out today. I think there was another fan here

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Friday, 18 June 2021 23:03 (four years ago)

production is mega thick on this one, like a combo of NYDM and Swe DM (the style is 100% American DM tho)

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Friday, 18 June 2021 23:04 (four years ago)

I tried that Helloween record; I made it four and a half minutes into the first song (which is seven and a half minutes long, FTR). I am generally more power metal-friendly than other posters but that dude's voice doesn't really do it for me, and the riffs weren't soaring or majestic enough to hook me. People who like Helloween, what do you like about them? Should I keep listening, and what should I listen for if/when I do?

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 18 June 2021 23:11 (four years ago)

did you like old Helloween, by chance, or no?

in their hey-day, I was into their infectious choruses and their speedy power chord chugging riffs, as well as the harmonized, melodic guitar leads.

considering the metal I normally like, it's very 'happy' sounding, but not in a way that makes me feel sick like Dragonforce.

I pretty much hated almost the entire Andi Deris of Helloween, this album isn't necessarily Keeper Part 3 but it brings back some of the anthemic choruses which were pretty boring on later releases and some of the more fun guitar work they had eschewed for boring power chord strums in recent years.

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Friday, 18 June 2021 23:15 (four years ago)

did you like old Helloween, by chance, or no?

I'm almost totally ignorant of Helloween. I might have heard one song somewhere along the line. And I actually like Dragonforce (I liked them even before I worked for their label, but then that happened and they turned out to be really good dudes without exception, especially their bassist, Fred). I'm much more into Rhapsody of Fire and their various offshoots, but big happy raving power metal is OK by me.

So if I'm gonna investigate Helloween for real, where should I start?

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 18 June 2021 23:44 (four years ago)

I'd start with Walls of Jericho, then Keeper of the Seven Keys, Part I

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Friday, 18 June 2021 23:52 (four years ago)

I thought it didn't come out until next week?

when you preorder you get early treats! it is seriously fucking fantastic.

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Saturday, 19 June 2021 01:44 (four years ago)

I'd rank keeper of the seven keys 2 over 1 myself. give "eagle fly free" a shot at least. it rules.

also, definitely not where to start but I have a real soft spot for the helloween goes saw 2000s track "mr. torture"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ocvm63GCGE

also legitimately prob one of the most fun shows I've seen. just this huge, enveloping feeling of joy and excitement all around when I saw em. from the stage and the fans.

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Sunday, 20 June 2021 00:13 (four years ago)

I love Helloween and rep for Walls (I still have a shirt from that album) and both Keeper records are keepers.
The new album was okay but lacked a "Ride the Sky" or "Future World" to be in the same realm of those albums of my youth.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Sunday, 20 June 2021 01:23 (four years ago)

Yeah, noob here but Walls rules

brimstead, Sunday, 20 June 2021 01:24 (four years ago)

Saturday I was in an actual (metal leaning) record store browsing in person for the first time in over a year and four different people came in while I was there asking for the new Helloween, but dude behind the counter said it sold out halfway through Friday. Seems like a lot of buzz around them, good on them. Haven't heard it yet.

Got the new issue of Decibel in the mail today and was surprised to see they dug up whatever rock Bl@ke Judd's been hiding under for a Nachtmystium HOF feature (Instinct: Decay).
