No such thing as too much downtuning imo.

they're from the same town as Nightwish :D

If 1h14m of doom-inflected depressive black metal sounds appealing to you, Mourning Dawn has got you covered:

If you like 90s era tech but not too tech death a la Death, Atheist, Oppressor's Solstice of Oppression, supernaturally channeled through high schoolers in Idaho, this performance will rivet you.

On their BC they have an album of these songs where the production does way more harm than good. Really hope they re-record everything.

They are called Barn.

Devilock, Sunday, 6 June 2021 04:58 (five years ago)

well that was supposed to be the non-embed link, hence my bothering to name them, but each time I post a YT clip I have a 50/50 shot at remembering

Devilock, Sunday, 6 June 2021 05:01 (five years ago)

this Boss Keloid record is pleasantly groovy...tough to put my figure on exactly who or what they sound like, but I thought of Baroness and Moon Tooth a couple times, with an extra dollop of 70s prog flavor

I don't think I can remember my own language being used this poetically in the kind of music I like anywhere since the early 80s wave band Aroma Di Amore :-)

StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:01 (four years ago)

This song is OK, as shreddy death metal goes, but I'm mostly posting it because I really like the name Deformatory.

my god, amenra played that song two years ago during their fire ritual already, why have I never checked that out in full? (fast forward to 27 minutes etc) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddxt3v15K4k

Big|Brave|Body news is exciting!

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Thursday, 10 June 2021 15:59 (four years ago)

As long as Robin takes care of all vocal duties, it could be good.

pomenitul, Thursday, 10 June 2021 16:02 (four years ago)

Speaking of Montrealers, every year brings its share of top-shelf Québécois black metal and this year I'm tempted to argue that Oriflamme (feat. the drummer from Atramentus and an ex-member of Ossuaire) are its torchbearers:

pomenitul, Thursday, 10 June 2021 20:14 (four years ago)

forgot to mention but latest Flotsam and Jetsam is again solid. they're on a good run on their last few albums!

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Thursday, 10 June 2021 22:59 (four years ago)

Bands of note with albums being released today:

AFI
Cold Cave
Go Ahead And Die (Max Cavalera and Son)
Mammoth WVH
Mr. Bungle (Live Video)

I realize that AFI and Cold Cave are only tangentially relevant in this thread but there is support for those bands in metal circles, I think.

I just got the CD in the mail from Profound Lore and this might be one of my favorite black metal songs.

totally kicking myself for not checking out that 2019 Amenra fire ritual footage, they probably play the complete new album there (part 2, linked above, 10:35 is the start of another as yet unknown song, for instance)

Revolver got all of my favorites except for all the ones that aren't Poppy.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 16:18 (four years ago)

The Gojira and Rob Zombie records are good; the Frozen Soul is OK but I can think of at least a dozen death metal albums I like better from this year; and Poppy is...you know what? Fine. If that's your thing, that's your thing and we really have nothing to talk about, so fuck it, whatever.

i had no idea Ripper Owens was the singer for K.K.'s Priest. that is all kinds of hilarious.

he wants so badly to be loved

Mayhem has an EP out on 7/9. It has one new song, a couple tracks that were bonus songs with deluxe editions of Daemon, their last studio album, and four punk rock covers.

Bassist Necrobutcher enlisted two of the band’s early punk-era vocalists, Maniac and Messiah, for guest appearances on the cover songs.

“My other contribution was to bring in two old members because of their obvious connection with punk: Maniac on the Dead Kennedys track and Billy (Messiah) on the Discharge track and some of the others."

Atavistic Black Disorder / Kommando EP:

01. Voces Ab Alta
02. Black Glass Communion
03. Everlasting Dying Flame
04. In Defense Of Our Future (Discharge Cover)
05. Hellnation (Dead Kennedys Cover)
06. Only Death (Rudimentary Peni Cover)
07. Commando (Ramones Cover)

I got a digital promo of it and the punk covers are far more reverent than might be expected.

There's absolutely nothing new or innovative about Inhuman Condition, but if you like early '90s Florida death metal as much as I do, you'll like them.

yeah this scratches the same itch as Gruesome, not shocking as Terry Butler's in the group. never be as unhinged as the old classics, but with fun squealy rifffs, who cares

New Obscura album in November. First single in July.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 16 June 2021 15:11 (four years ago)

from last year, but this is a local band that is now based in FL that reformed after a 30 year hiatus last year, called (quite unoriginally) Haunted - https://haunted666.bandcamp.com/album/haunted

Blackened death metal with occasional keyboards, really evil arrangements and vocals, and lots of evil little demonic interludes, except the dude who does the voices of the demons sounds like Jabba the Hutt

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Thursday, 17 June 2021 13:47 (four years ago)

Not super excited about the prospect of live shows yet, but Napalm Death and Eyehategod on Halloween is pretty tempting. They're opening for a Daveless GWAR, so I'll be leaving early.

New Lingua Ignota album Sinner Get Ready announced for an 8/6 release.
First single "Pennsylvania Furnace" is haunting, histrionic, and captivating...

But one thing I’ve learned is everything burns...

Damn.

got the CD of the Thy Catafalque album and jammed in the car on a drive to and from the next town over

album of the fuckin year.tremendous

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Friday, 18 June 2021 02:28 (four years ago)

Desaster is a great band, I always thought their secret ingredient was their drummer Stefan Hüskens who brings a really great groove to it all, but apparently he left for Asphyx and Sodom, and there's now a new dude?

I file The Body under "bands I keep trying to like but can't get into", but I love Big|Brave and wasn't expecting this collaboration to sound like the track that dropped today. Am now excited!
