How Much Money Would It Take For You To Listen To All These Asia Albums?

I don't admit this often.

I would be willing to listen to this at no charge.

reunion of original lineup means more of these live albums on the way(probably already a few on the market by now)

If you consider that each of those albums feels like it's seven hours long, that's one week of non-stop torment. I'd do it for $150 though.

re discussion above i always thought heat of the moment was pretty much just a straight rewrite of video killed etc. you can sing either verse and chorus over the other one.

but funny how at the time, or to me anyway, "video killed" was New Wave and cool, but "heat of the moment" was embarrassing shit that only the choirboy synth player in my hs rock band was into.

ya know what else is cool about that live album with "Video" is that it also includes a version of the Wetton-sung King Crimson tune "Book Of Saturday". I'd listen to that for free!

Napoli, Italy (February 26, 2010) – ASIA, rock’s first important super-group of the 80s - featuring members from Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Crimson and The Buggles – will release Omega, its highly anticipated new album of original material. The record is due in the spring of 2010 on Frontiers Records.

Geoffrey Downes, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and John Wetton, the four original Asia members, reunited in 2006, twenty-three years after all four had last played together. The much publicised reunion resulted in highly successful world tours, a double live LP and DVD (entitled Fantasia: Live In Tokyo) and an acclaimed studio album Phoenix in 2008 which debuted at number 73 in the Billboard charts in the USA and entered the top 100 in several European countries.

Begun during the summer 2009, the writing and recording sessions of Omega, immediately showed inspiration and good feelings. “We were looking to create something different with Omega,” says keyboardist Geoff Downes. “Of course, the sound of the 4 band members of Asia will always have a certain hallmark when we play together. That's a given. But we approached the song writing with a mind to getting a degree of variety into these compositions. Hence, you will hear areas of textures where arguably we have never gone before.”

Add lead vocalist/bassist/guitarist John Wetton: “Asia is an English prog-rock band with a pop edge, always has been, and hopefully always will be. Accessible, melodic, anthemic songs with great playing, luxuriating in a bed of lush orchestration, with lyrics that strike a sympathetic chord in even the most cynical heart. There you have it; Omega is a themed album in Asia's fine tradition, without the millstone of a concept.”

Steve Howe adds that “the whole recording process has been inspiring and rewarding, and I’m very excited about the result”. “I would say these are all strong individual songs” says drummer Carl Palmer. “It was a very smooth experience, and arguably one of our best records.”

For the first time since the debut album, ASIA worked with an outside producer, Mike Paxman (Uriah Heep, Status Quo) who managed to create a truly special sounding album with the highs, lows and lots of dynamics. He helped the band to put together a tapestry of sound, which demonstrates the rich strata of Asia's music. Paxman was able to achieve this through the songs which spun real stories of actual events and experiences in locations around the globe. “The songs always have a message, hopefully positive,” says Wetton. “My songs are almost always autobiographical, so there is hope and experience in there, too. The lyric will never leave you on a negative thought. “

As with the most popular of ASIA releases, the cover art specifically designed for the project by acclaimed artist Roger Dean. The concept of the title (Omega) and the 'Year of the Tiger' referencing of the cover art underline the fact that this is real Asia. John Wetton explains: “The title 'Omega', as any fan of the band will tell you is 'very Asia' (as is the album, by the way). It no more means 'final' than 'Alpha' means 'the first' (which it wasn't). It's a great sounding/looking word, and a bookend to 'Alpha'. In many ways, musically and conceptually, the two albums share commonality.”

“We are embarking on our European tour around the middle of April, then straight in to Japan for the middle of May” says Downes. “It's going to be fun working out the new set list because obviously we have another album under our belt now with Omega.”

After touring Europe and Japan, ASIA will embark on a US tour late in the summer of 2010.

Haven't been around in awhile...I was thinking KickStarter would be a good funding model for the Dave Q track-by-track analysis...

I didn't realize until just now that at some point this band completely split in two with one version (Asia Featuring John Payne) having little-to-no connection to the actual band (I guess John Payne wound up owning part of the name because he stuck around with Downes on about a dozen of the listed albums no-one ever bought)

anyway now I'm listening to tracks from Phoenix and they're ok, you know, for Asia. Probably better than anything since the debut.

oh I was going to revive this to say exactly what I guess I said 3 months ago. never mind.

JOhn and Asia will always be united... It is an unbeliveable gift that Geoff and John met and that we have too versions of Asia... As I really do have to say it s great with Steve How I would rather have Payne and Downes.. than no Payne ...and Norlander is great..!! but we all miss Geoff as well...

Payne, Govan and Schellen continued working together after Downes' departure for the aforementioned reunion. This included continuing work on what had been planned as the next Asia album, Architect of Time. They began to work under the name GPS with Ryo Okumoto of Spock's Beard on keys. Their debut release, Window to the Soul (2006), included material developed for Architect of Time.[11]

In May 2007, Payne, Govan and Schellen announced the new band name, "Asia featuring John Payne", adding Erik Norlander on keys. The name had been contractually agreed between Payne, Downes, Wetton, Howe and Palmer on the 9th of May 2006.[12] The first release under this name at the end of 2007 was a live recording of the late 2005 Asia line-up of Downes, Payne, Govan and Schellen, entitled Extended Versions in the US and Scandinavia in the UK.

In June 2008, the band has announced the release of an EP entitled "Military Man" with royalties being donated to the USO.[13] The band are also planning to release a completed Architect of Time,[14] with all songs written by Payne and Norlander. The band are touring in 2009 under the Asia Featuring John Payne name, and currently playing festivals and small venues, performing songs from the entire history of Asia, including "Heat of the Moment".[6] Govan was replaced by Mitch Perry and North American touring has continued through 2010 (Govan remains a part of side-project GPS). Perry is a seasoned session musician with over two decades experience touring with major acts including Cher and Michael Schenker.[12] Meanwhile, Payne, Govan, and Schellen are also continuing work as GPS, while Schellen is also recording with Circa.[15]

In late 2008 they signed a three album deal with Sony Music Japan in said country and a deal in the States and elsewhere will be announced soon.[16] A studio album, originally called Architect of Time (the name ultimately used for a Payne side project instead) and now Americana [17] is underway and expected for release later in 2011. A live album, Extended Versions or Scandinavia by Asia Featuring John Payne, was released in fall 2007, drawn from a December 2005 show in Finland with Downes, Schellen, Payne and Govan.

I'm still confused. I guess these guys were in the last progression of the Asia name before Downes reunited with all the o.g. members? John Payne must be a complete narcissist to go around with a band named "Asia featuring John Payne".

Oh, I guess I didn't realize he'd been the singer since Wetton left in 1992. I guess the band's as much his as anyone's at this point, but still...Asia featuring John Payne isn't Asia at all.

I want to defend them even though I don't know their catalog that well. A power quartet based around John Wetton writing pop-rock songs with Geoff Downes and STEVE HOWE AND CARL PALMER ROUNDING OUT THE LINEUP? Just as a prospect, that is awesome.

And like I said, really liked that feature track from the last album. It is classic Asia.

I actually like all three of the 80s records (Alpha the least), but I haven't heard a bit of anything that's been recorded under the name since...though, the reunion albums are really the only ones I'd be interested in anyway.

Omega is probably the worst thing Roger Dean has ever designed btw.

the new Yes cover is pretty terrible, as are most of his Yes work after ABWH. He is sleepwalking through crap these days, looks like he throws this shit together before eating his lunch and calls it done.

The new Yes cover is a billion times better than Omega, but its still pretty awful.
